Muhlenberg County Convention Center Gillims on the Gas By BOBBY LEwIs GREENVILLE, KY, JAN, 12 Nearly 300 riders were on hand for round three of the Steve Nace Kentucky State Indoor Dirt Track Series in Greenville. On a perfectly prepared track, the Gillim brothers, from nearby Owensboro, were also perfectly prepared, Ethan Gillim started the day off by winning both the 50cc Shaft short track and IT over a hard-charging Nick McFadden, He then came back to top the restarted 50cc Chain class, Hayden Gillim went on a tear, topping the 65cc, 85cc, 200cc and 200 Pro Am short tracks, as well as the 200cc IT. He used potent holeshots in winning most of his events, with the toughest one coming in the 65cc class. Miles Thomton took the lead and appeared to have it in the bag until a bobble in tum three with a lap to go let Hayden by to take the win. Tyler Whitecotton worked his way up from the back row to place third. Frankie Lee Gillim tumed in perfect rides in the 65cc and 85cc IT events to add to the family winnings. Three heats were used to trim the Open Pro final down to 10 riders. Nick Daniels led the field into tum one. while Joel Brown and Aaron Ladd applied the heat. With two laps down, Brown made a slick move up the inside, bringing Ladd with him, while Daniels was moved to the rear of the field. Brown held on to become the third different Open Proclass winner in as many races. Ladd came back to win the Open Pro-Am short-track Pro-class IT with fiag-to-fiag runs. Daniels topped the Stock Mad Dog short track after getting past fast starter Steve Thomas. He also held on to win a bump contest in the Mad Dog class over Matt Pursley. Rod Hartzel nabbed holeshots and disappeared from the Vet Over 30 and Over 40 crowd. Justin Hanna, Ed Clark and John Lewis turned in good rides in their respective classes, each winning both his heat and main event. Results Short Tntck 50 $HAFT: 1. Ethan Cillim (Yom): 2. Streets of Willow Springs Screams and Thunder on the Streets By ROD GIRARD WILLOW SPRINGS, CA, JAN. 12 No one could've asked for better weather as the Califomia Motorcycle Road Racing Association hosted its 1 Ith season opener on the Streets of Willow Springs. With an everincreasing interest in the Formula Thunder class, the Streets reverberated with the contrasting sounds of screaming 80ce and 125cc two-strokers and the thunderous thumping of single-cylinder four-strokers. Although different in nearly every aspect, including riding styles, riders of both put on equally exciting shows. The morning Amateur BOcc GP race saw the field spreading out early on, with Clint Solomon, T.J. Trevino, Michael Beck and Frank Torpey pretty much just playing followthe-leader. In the afternoon race, however, the same four riders created some good, close action. Solomon had to work his way into the lead, while Beck and Trevino fought a see-saw battle for second and third. Solomon took the overall, while Beck edged out Trevino for second, and Torpey followed them in for fourth. In the Expert 80cc GP, Aaron Hammel ran away with race one, leaVing Leonard Mellgren, Scott Cohea, Jeff Jones and Skye Girard to fight for positions behind him. As in the Amateur 80cc GP class, the second Expert 80cc GP race offered closer competition between Hammel and Mellgren for the lead, while Cohea and Jones diced for third. Close at the stripe, Hammel retained the overall, with Mellgren second, Cohea third and Jones a challenging fourth. The first race of the Formula 125cc GP finished with the confusion of a red fiag. Josh Alverson fended off Jon Schendel for first, while Jeff Russell and Girard swapped positions for third and fourth. Race two produced two distinct battles: Alverson and Jon Schendel fought for first while Girard and J.D. Schendel fought past Russell for third and fourth. In the overall results, Alverson swept first, with Jon second, Girard third and Russell retaining fourth. Treating the spectators to some of the closest race action of the day, Richy Headley fought off the hard-charging Leigh Crawford and Bradley Adams to sweep the overall. The more friendly nose-to-tail action of race one was marred on the last lap of race two when the much more aggressive riding of Adams ended in a crash that took out both Adams and Crawford. At the checkers, the conservative riding of Tommy Crawford paid off, as he took second overall. Randy Ross and Jeff Hawkins inherited third and fourth, respectively.
