the checkered flag first; Paluzzi held on to second, followed by Wharton. In the second moto, Canada nailed the holeshot again; this time, Wharton was hot on his trail. Canada was once again able to set the pace, as Wharton tried to close the gap. Wharton inched closer, but time ran out. and the checkered flag waved for Canada, followed by Wharton and Paluzzi. Wharton would come back on his 85cc Wild Bunch MC No Gamble HS Braun Flexes for the Bunch By BREIT BOOTH he flew past Jernigan into second. Bailie then set his sights on the leader. Rohde was able to hold off Bailie until they hit the whoops; then Bailie made his move and took over the lead. Bailie took the win, followed by Rohde and Jernigan. Rohde repeated his holeshot in the second moto and led early, followed by Jernigan and Bailie. Wasting no time, Bailie quickly got around Jernigan and then passed Rohde to take the lead. Bailie built a huge lead. Rohde slid out in the turn, and Jernigan and Jake Watts battled for second. Jernigan was able to get some breathing room from Watts, but before long Rohde was hitting Watts' back tire, trying for the last podium position. The checkered flag came out for Bailie, followed by Jernigan and Rohde. The Pee Wee class has come alive at Starwest. Brandon Scharer was unbeatable in the 50cc (7-8) division, performing some incredible doubles and triples not thought possible for a 50cc rider. Meanwhile, the 50cc (4-6) class has also stepped up to a big-track challenge, and little Blake Green has won the hearts of the spectators. Taking a two-moto sweep with his aggressive riding style, Green, who weighs about 35 pounds, brought the crowd to its feet with some exciting racing. PAHRUMP, NV, JAN. 11 Clint Braun put it all together for three solid laps and came out as the overall winner at the No Gamble Hare Scrambles, put on by the Wild Bunch Motorcycle Club. Typically known as one of the more difficult races on the schedule, the Wild Bunch did not disappoint; the overall lead changed more than three times, Mac Stewart was the first-lap leader but was unable to hang on for long. Matt Gosnell assumed the lead on lap two, Last year's overall Open Bike winner, Dave fry, experienced problems witb his brakes but managed to charge back to take third overall. Through it all, Braun kept a steady pace aboard his Yamaha 250, and that paid off in the end - marking one of the few times in recent years that a 250cc rider has claimed the overall. In the Amateur ranks, it was a day of victory for the old guys. Lorin Noorda came out of the Over 35 Amateur class and put a spank~ ing on the rest of the field. Following not too far behind was Open Amateur winner Mike "Coach" Collins. "Everyone was flying out there today," said Collins. "The 125 guys would get me in the tight stuff, but I'd show them the 500 ponies on the power-line roads." The aocc class featured a battle that went down to the wire, from which Calvin Whipple came out on top. "It was my last race aboard 80s," said Whipple. "I just wanted to go out on top." Amateur rider Darin Anderson finished second overall after putting in an impressive ride. He will surely be seen in the Expert class by the next race. Results: Results 50 (4·6): I. In the 125cc Beginner class, there was never a dull moment. Honda rider Dalton BaIlie took the class win despite some tough competition. In the first moto, Chris Rohde nailed the holeshot, followed by Tyler Jernigan and Bailie. When it came to the unforgettable rhythm section, Bailie had the beat, and 62 FEBRUARY 5, 2003' c: U c • e n e "'" 'is Wild Bunch MC No Gamble Hare Scrambles: Mac Stewart led the first lap and placed second overall at the No Gamble Hare Scrambles in Pahrump, Nevada. thai shot past for the lead. Raible held second to the end, followed by Bales, Green and Bell. Moto two's holeshot went to Lowenthal, ahead of Raible, Bales, Bell and Green. By the completion of lap two, Raible had disappeared in the infamous back section of the track, emerging in fifth. This allowed Lowenthal to lengthen his lead and Bell to move into second, followed by Green and Bales. Lowenthal ended moto two with a commanding lead over the rest of the pack, which consisted of Bell, Green, Raible and Bales. Lowenthal's perfect 1-1 score garnered the overall win. Raible's 2-4 score was good enough for second overall, and Bell took home third-place honors. The 250cc Pro action was also entertaining. Mota one kicked off with Keifer taking the holes hot over Jimmy Lavorci and Gordon Ward. Lavorci pushed Keifer to the best of his ability until a few mistakes dropped him back a few seconds behind the leader. The finishing order was Keifer, Lavorci and Ward. In moto two, Lavorci's slick outside~gate~ to-the-inside-first-tum move proved to be beneficial, as he absconded with the holeshot, ahead of Keifer and Ward. All three riders contested the next half of the race no less than a second apart - that is, until Ward made a few mistakes and dropped back a few seconds. Lavorci successfully fended off the apparently futile attempts that Keifer made - until the last turn, when Lavorci protected the inside line, only to have Keifer go to the extreme inside and make the pass for the lead with half a bikelength to spare. Keifer took first, with Lavorci second and Ward third. 35+ NOV: 1. Dennis Dowell (KTM); 2. Don Turnage (Yam). 40+ NOV; I. Billy White (Hon): 2. Roger Ostendorf (Yam); 3.
