IMX Arena Grand Opening IMX Arena Hofmaster Master of IMX Opener In the 250cc Pro class. it was again Hofmaster and Brayton going one-two, with Bartz in third. Teddy Maier in fourth and Stone rounding out the top five. On Saturday night, Hofmaster picked up right where he left off on Friday, winning both his 125cc and 250cc heat races. Brayton also won both of his heat races, and the two first met up in the Dash For Cash. Brayton led early and seemed to have the race won until he went down on the last lap, handing the win and the cash over to Hofmaster. After the race, Hofmaster did a little giving of his own - donating all of his Dash For Cash winnings to the DeCoster's Kids program. In the 125cc main event, Hofmaster got the holeshot and jumped out to an early lead. Both Brayton and Johnson got midpack starts. By the halfway point. it was Hofmaster with a big lead. Brayton in sixth and Johnson in seventh. Brayton and Johnson battled their way through the pack into the second and third positions. After swapping positions a couple of times. Johnson made the pass stick on the last lap to finish second. and Brayton followed him across the line in third. In the 250cc main, it was Hofmaster agam out front with a big lead and Brayton and Johnson battling it out for second. This time. Brayton was able to hold on to the secondplace spot, with Johnson right behind him in third. Maier capped off his weekend of solid finishes with a fourth place, followed by Bartz in fifth. After winning every race that he entered. Hofmaster attributed his domination of the weekend to his preparation. "I trained hard all week: he said, "just like a regular arenacross. I came in here with that same kind of attitude, and it worked for me." Brayton was definitely not disappointed with his performance. He stayed consistent. getting some heat-race wins and finishing second in all but one of the main events during the weekend. "Everyone wants to win. Brayton remarked. "but with competition like Tommy Hofmaster, Bartz, Chad Johnson and Teddy Maier. everyone was riding good. I got close that last moto. but second is good, too." The new facility has created a lot of excitement throughout the Midwest motocross community. With an appearance from one of the all-time greatest motocross racers. Roger DeCoster. and the great Pro and Amateur racing, the IMX Arena's opening weekend was a huge success. By JAMES MONDORF FARLEY, lA, DEC. 13-15 Shogun Yamaha's Tommy Hofmaster. who is currently third in points in the National Arenacross Series. took advantage of his weekend off from that series to go undefeated at the inaugural IMX Arena indoor motocross opener. The new facility lured many of the Midwest's top riders to come and battle it out on the tight indoor track. Some other top arenacross riders in attendance included Tamer Billet MX Honda's Justin Brayton, who is currently 10th in points. and Valvoline Tuf Racing's Chad Johnson, who is 13th. Regional arenacross racers Brandon Bartz and Brian Stone also showed up to get in on the action. The weekend included Friday and Saturday night Amateur and Pro races as well as a full day of Amateur racing on Sunday. Friday and Saturday nights also included a Dash For Cash and a freestyle Jump-Off contest. The IMX Arena is located just 12 miles west of Dubuque. Iowa. It is an indoor arena built specifically for motocross. The track is very similar to most arenacross tracks. featur· ing a whoop section. a rhythm section and a large catapult jump. The facility is the brain· child of Steve Allen and Rob Huff. The idea came about when Allen and his kids had been traveling to arena crosses and found it very hard to be competitive without spending some time on their bikes_ He thought it would be a good idea to have a place to ride locally during the winter, and he found out that a lot of other people felt the same. "It's something we did for the kids," Huff remarked. "They really don't have much to do around here in the winter." After doing some research. they bought the property, built the large building. put a motocross track inside it and made many Midwestern motocross riders very happy. Hofmaster is one of those riders. "It's good for all the local riders to get our speed up for arenacross," Hofmaster commented. "It's an awesome race. By far the biggest name in attendance dur· ing the weekend was Suzuki team manager and former World Champion Roger DeCoster, who made an appearance Saturday night to sign autographs and support his DeCoster's Kids program, aimed at keeping kids off drugs. On Friday night, Hofmaster won the 125cc Pro class, followed by Brayton and Johnson in second and third. JANUARY 22, 2003' cue I I By Cuw LJGHT WOODLAND, WA, DEC. 14 As is typical in the Northwest at this time of the year. the conditions were wet and extremely sloppy during round four of the Northwest Vintage £, Evolution MX Championship Series. held at Woodland Motocross Park. Nevertheless, several riders were impressive in the quagmire-like conditions, including Washingtonians Travis Anderberg and Randy Skiver. Anderberg, last year's 250cc and Open Amateur-class champion, has this year moved up to the next-highest classification (Intermediate) and has also been the dominant force in that division thus far in the early stages of the season. Anderberg, riding a pair of 1973 Bultaco Pursangs, decimated the competition in the 250cc and Open Intermediate classes. winning the Open class with I - 1 placings after splitting moto wins with CZ rider Loren Smith in the 250cc ranks. Skiver, whose claim to fame came while burning up the nation's TT courses in the 1970s. has proved his alt·around durability with his motocross prowess. On this day, Skiver didn't let the muddy conditions deter him, and he topped the Pre-1970, Four-Stroke and Over 50 Expert classes aboard his trusty Penton/Honda ("Penda") hybrid. Skiver won every moto he entered to snare the laurels as the day's top performer. Skiver's wins weren't a picnic. as he was faced with challenges from BSA rider Ed Locke and Triumph-mounted Canadian Ken Burningham in the competitive Pre-1970 class. Locke. who was one of the many Oregonians on hand. was Skiver's closest competition in the class and finished second overall with a pair of runner-up finishes to lead Burningham in the overall column. Mark Baer, who rode a 1969 CZ 360, was the top performer in the adjoined Intermediate class, while another of the two Penda riders in the field, Glenn Finnerin, trailed Baer in moto one but was among the many moto-two DNF casualties. In the Novice portion. Hodakas led the way, as Thai Anderson and Axel Anderson went one-two, ahead of Gary Meads. The day's largest classes during the Vintage portion of the program were. as usual.
