the 250cc and Over 40 Amateur classes. Honda Elsinore-mounted Leon Leonard leveled the competition in the 250cc Amateur class, handily winning both motos. This showed that the 1970s fable about that machine's not working in the mud was a myth, as Leonard notched his first overall win of the series in fine fashion. Mark Sullivan used another of the dreaded "light-switch" powerbanded machines, a Suzuki TM, to place second overall after trading runner-up finishes with Bultaco rider Lonnie Stillson. The Bultacos were among the best of the mud bikes back in "the day," although Stillson couldn't hold his together for both motos and went 2-DNF in the slop. Husky rider Erik Sullivan (3-4) nabbed third overall, trailed by John Tenny (7-5) and AJS rider John Vasilauskas, who rounded out the top five via 6- 7 placings. There are two other Anderbergs coming up through the ranks: AI and Bryan, both of whom were aboard the Spanish marque, as was Travis. AI led the way in the large Over 40 Amateur class, trading moto wins with Jeff Shelton. AI, though, bettered Shelton in mota two (Shelton could only muster a sixth-place finish). Bryan (2-3) and Shelton (1-6) filled out the top three overall. in the adjoined Over 40 Intermediate ciass, Lorin Smith made up for a loss in the 250cc Intermediate class by winning the second (and critical) moto to drop Husky rider Chris Gray to second overall. although Smith had to follow the lone Expert rider, former AMA Expert dirt tracker and motocrosser Andy James. Gray won mota one but couldn't duplicate that performance in mota two and finished second overall, ahead of Pete Nanditt. Vasilauskas and Bill Grubin, who finished second in mota one but did not finish mota two, marring his class-championship hopes. Grubin. riding a 19BO Honda CR250, made up for that heartbreak and disappointment by winning the Over 40 Evolution Intermediate class overall, beating former 1970s Pro Ray Crawford and fellow Yamaha rider Charlie Martin. Blake Landon has been a front-runner in several classes this season, and this day was much the same for the C£,J Yamaha-mounted Oregonian. Landon beat the competition in the Under 40 Evolution Expert ciass, although he trailed Kurt Stevens in the Open Evolution Expert ciass and finished second to Monty Price in the Four-Stroke Expert class. While he won the 400cc class Friday, on this night he topped the 250cc class on the same Yamaha 400. Phillips jumped into the lead immediately, ahead of Dillon Cava. John Lewis, Bob Sweeten and Friday's 250cc winner, Doug Reinert. Phillips kept a fair margin over Cava during the eariy going before gradually pulling away. Sweeten took third coming off the second tum on the fourth lap. In the closing laps, he started pressuring Cava for second. Rules for this series are slightly different from those of most other races in this area. Except for the XR100 class. a rider may only enter one class: time trials determine starting positions for 125s and larger bikes: and Amateur and Experts run together. Riders are divided into a maximum of four six-rider heats, from which the top four go to two eightrider semis. The top four "survivors" then go the final. Other repeat winners (though, unlike Phillips, they repeated in the same class) were Tyler Kidwell and Austin Greenland. Kidwell lapped up to the close pack battle for second among Joseph Masta. Kyle Schlimme and Thomas Webb in the 65cc class. Schlimme took second when Masta fell four laps from the end. Greenland had to work for his second 80cc win. He gated first, in front of Brett Pugh, R.J. Hart and Joey Parks. Greenland slipped slightly off the groove coming off the second tum on the third lap, giving Hart the lead, but Greenland regained the lead entering turn three on the follOWing lap. Hart and Pugh waged a tight battle for second until they encountered lapped traffic in the final third of the race. Jake Johnson took the XR I 00 class lead. followed by Scott Saunders, Paul Shoemaker and Chris Carr. At the end of the first lap, Carr took third, with Johnson sliding out off four on the second lap. This threw the Saunders/Carr battle for second into a fight for the lead that lasted for the entire 15 laps. Coming off the final turn, Carr tried to slip under Saunders to grab the win, but Saunders moved to the inside slightly. blocking his attempt and winning by half a length. After banging bars through the semi, Shawn Rothstein and Joey Schueler continued their struggle in the 125cc final. This time, Schueler was first out of two, in front of Chad Gochenour, Ryder Malone and Ryan Henderson. Rothstein tried many times to get under· or through - Schueler, but Schueler held on to the lead. After a slow start, Brandon Robinson started picking his way through the field, coming up fourth on around the 10th lap. With two laps left. Robinson tried again to get under off two. only to get caught up in the tires. He dropped to fourth before getting back under way. The "march to 21 st-century motorcycle technology" in the 400cc class got slightly Timonium Short Track: Perry "Ace" Phillips (1) and Dillon Cava (29) lead the 250cc class at round two of the 27th annual Rodney Farris Memorial Indoor ST Series in Timonium, Maryland_ derailed on this night. Bryan Bemisderfer grabbed the lead on his Honda 450, in front of the tricked-out Bultaco of Rob Smith, with the Buls of Mark Burkholder and Harold Brossman behind. Smith slipped under Bemisderfer for the lead as they entered the first tum on lap two, and once free, he pulled out to a straightaway margin by the end. Burkholder slipped under Bemisderfer for second around the halfway mark. Jake Johnson received an early Christmas present at the start of the 250cc Pro final, when he fell after catching Mike Varnes' rear fender. However, officials ruled that they were going for the red flag because Varnes jumped the start, so Johnson's fall "didn't happen: On the "official" start, Johnson took the lead from one of his mentors - the most dominant rider during the 1990s, Georgie Price. Several lengths back were Varnes, Ken Yoder and Donnie Mullen. Johnson started to pull away from the dangerous-to-be-in-front-of Price during the first half of the race. In the later stages, Johnson couldn't get by some good riders who were having a bad night. This allowed Price to close the gap, but he couldn't get close enough to try a 'Timonium bump 'n' run" on the final lap. Danny Bromley easily destroyed the rest of the 50cc Oil-Injected class, while Tyler Stacey had a spectacular beginning to the 50cc (4-6) contest. On the start, he fell. remounted and tried to rejoin, only to run over the tires, with rider and bike sprawling out on the track, On the restart, he worked his way into first on the 10th lap for the win. Bailey Spence again took the 50cc (7-9) class win. Timonium Short Track Timonium. Maryland Results: December 14. 2002 (Round 2 of 3) 500IL·INJ: I. Danny Bromley (KTM); 2. Jacob Runkles (Yam); 3. By DAN MAHONY CLAREMORE, OK, DEC. 14 Yahoo Racing's fourth annual Oklahoma Indoor Arena Race Series got under way at the Claremore Expo Arena with a good rider turnout. nice weather and a tacky track. Ten motorcycle classes with nearly 65 entries kept the large and enthusiastic crowd hootin' and hollerin'. Broken Arrow, Oklahoma's Danny Eslick, who recently signed a big-bucks road· race contract. made his wallet even fatter with spectacular wins in the Mad Dog Open class as well as the Open Pro event. In Mad Dog action. young Eslick leaped to the front at the flash of the green. with Mike Hinds right on his fender. The two rivals banged handlebars several limes, with each executing miraculous saves, all the while staying side by side. On lap seven of the 12-lapper, the pair came upon a lapped rider, and Eslick did a dipsy-doodle move; in doing so, he put just enough daylight between the dueling Hondas to keep Hinds at bay. Randy King, Jason Tyer and Jeremy Hinkle rounded out the top five. In the Open Pro 15-lapper, Claremore's own Hinds absconded with the holeshot - but suddenly, Hinds was on the ground in his second high-side of the day - and he was run over, to boot. On the restart, with Hinds out. cue e Eslick made it quite a show. with spectacular powerslides in every corner. In one of his best Pro rides, local rider Russell Marlin kept Eslick in sight until lap eight. when Texan Marc Williams rode up around the far outside and took over the second spot. Marlin was holding on to third, over A.J. Eslick, when all hell broke loose in turn one. When the dust cleared, A.J. had a flat tire, and Tyer was flat on his back. seeing stars and birdies. The race was called, with Danny in the winner's circle, Williams second and Marlin third. Hinkle, A.J .• Bret Sowders. and Jared Enright were still upright and finished in that order. Tyer, Billy Bevers and Hinds all scored DNFs. Hinds' only bright spot of the evening was his win in the 250cc Pro class. Danny fumbled the start and Hinds was off like a rocket. From last place, Danny took fourth on lap three, was dropped back to fifth on lap seven, then got on the gas to grab fourth back two laps later. was up to third the next lap and was in second place with three laps to go. Hinds was gone, however, and Danny had to settle for the second-place points. Sowders finished third. over Hinkle and Marlin. Hinds also snared the holeshot in the Open 1T race, but Craig Chapman took over the top spot on the second lap and held on for the win. Danny finished second, over his big brother A.J., Hinds, Hinkle and Cory West.
