Spectra Oil/VP Fuel Pro-Am Challenge Forster Livestock Pavilion STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT SALEM, OR, DEC. 27-28 -!J1ason McCormick's second appear~ ance of the year at Forster livestock Pavilion proved to be a successful one, financially, for the Washingtonian, as the full-time AMA National and Supercross rider pocketed nearly $ 1000 for his efforts. The Honda-mounted McCormick, National number 76, won the 250cc Pro and Spectro Oil/VP Fuel Pro-Am Challenge races on both nights, beating highly regarded Northwest riders Ryan Terlecki and Wolf Creek, Oregon's Ty "Tiger" Lacey. Qualifying for the event was based upon results from the six previous rounds of the CMC Northwest Winter Series and also on a pair of evening qualifiers that narrowed the field of riders to 23. McCormick was well on his way to a win in the first of Friday's qualifiers when he fell, and he then had to make it to Friday's final via the last-chance qualifier, which he easily won. Things went much better for McCormick from that point on, as he vaulted into the lead at the drop of the gate in Friday's single 50-lap Spectro Oil/VP Fuel Pro-Am Challenge moto (which would be combined with Saturday's moto for overall positions). All of the action, though, raged in the battle for second place, some 20 seconds back, between Terlecki and Lacey, both of whom were piloting Yamaha fourstroke machinery. The duo rode in close quarters for most of the race, with the spot going to Terlecki. Lacey netted a close third-place finish, while former multi-time AMA National number holder Tony Graves gamered fourth. Interestingly, McCormick lapped all but Terlecki and Lacey in the 20-minute-plus-two-lap moto. Ryan Leach ran as high as fifth in the moto before developing a flat rear tire and losing a position to Washington's J.R. Vielle late in the moto. Suzuki-mounted Gary Terlecki finished seventh, while the top-placing Amateur rider was Race Lacey, with eighth. McCormick was also impressive in taking his 250cc Pro-class win on Friday, posting a double-moto decimation ahead of Ryan Terlecki, YZ250mounted Leach, Graves and Vielle, who cracked the top five aboard his Honda CRF450R. McCormick added another $250 to his wallet for his efforts. One of the Northwest's top Women's-class riders, 17-year-old Heidi Koerschgen, clobbered the competition in one of the season's largest field of riders, handily winning both motos. Her closest rival, the oldest rider in the field at 42, was Jeanne Van Buskirk, who extended her points lead with her second-place finish. KTM rider Tanya Petersen, Alicia Reader and Laci Cardelli followed. Nationally ranked 85cc rider Josh Hill was on hand, and the rider from LaCenter, Washington, easily captured both moto wins in the competitive Supermini class (as he would also do the following night). Local riders Danny Gubser and Aaron McClinton filled out the top three, while Travis McClinton and one of the youngest riders in the field, Glenn Prestholt Jr., rounded out the top five, making it a sweep for the Yamaha marque. On Saturday, McCormick came back to plow the competition under in his dual 250cc Pro-class moto wins, although this time Tiger Lacey, who turned in some impressive rides in the recent World Supercross Series rounds, scored second overall to McCormick while campaigning his Yamaha 250F. Ryan Terlecki, piloting a brand-new Yamaha YZ450F, grabbed the third-place money, followed by Graves and Vielle. The second leg of the Spectro Oil/VP Fuel Pro-Am Challenge left no doubt in anyone's mind that McCormick is back in top form after suffering a succession of serious injuries in 2002 that sidelined him for much of the AMA Supercross and National series. McCormick got around early race leader Tiger on the second lap, and from that point on he was never challenged. McCormick opened up yet another large lead in the 50-lap moto, again leaving Ryan Terlecki and Tiger to scramble for the remnants. Tiger got around Ryan Terlecki on lap 10 and would retain the position for 36 more laps, until the latter got around the 20-year-old with four laps remaining to seal his second-place effort for both the night and the weekend overall. Tiger garnered third overall with a pair of third-place finishes, followed by Graves, Leach, Vielle and Gary Terlecki, who were the overall top seven finishers as well. Race Lacey's two impressive performances netted him the top Amateur laurels, followed by fellow Amateurs Travis McMackin, Nick Randklev, Joe Brockway and Pro rider Matt Williams, who rounded out the top 12 overall. One of the weekend's closest races was the Bill's Motorcycles- sponsored Husky Challenge race. Brandon Barber and Jonathan Andrew came into the evening at a deadlock in points. Barber escaped with a narrow win at the finish. Casey Sutton, Alan Burggren and Coby Ayres followed. eN Gared Steinke was a two-class winner on Friday night at Forster Livestock Pavilion, posting the 80cc (9-11) and Supermini-class victories. Steinke also won Saturday's 80cc (9-11) class but finished third in Supermini to Washington's Josh Hill and Danny Gubser.
