MotoCity Raceway MoloDome Sparks Flew in the MotoDome By DAN BROTEN STAPLES, MN, DEC. 14 Open Amateur action saw Jeff Sparks of Belie Plaine, Minnesota, pilot his DTXed Yamaha YZ125 to a first-place finish at round two of the MotoCity Raceway MotoDome Indoor series. The bike was specially prepared with a handlebar-mounted lever for the rear brake, aliowing Sparks to lean his body forward and therefore not have to contend with using the rear-brake pedal with his foot. Flying around the track looked easy for Sparks, as he cruised to victory after Craig Abresch of Rogers, Mjnnesota, crashed his Rotax in turn three eariy in the race. Sparks was followed by heat winner Steve Bystrom of Forrest Lake, Minnesota, and Jim Brethorst of Eden Prairie. Minnesota, both on Yamahas. Shawn Alexander of Hewitt, Minnesota, took his first career dirt-track victory in the huge Beginner class with a convincing win. Riding his pristine Honda XL350, Alexander quickly adapted his road-racing skills to the tight indoor dirt track at the Dome. After ieading his heat race for several laps and then being passed by Brett Hardy of Merrifield, Minnesota, Alexander came out in the main event and took a decisive lead early in the race and went on to victory. There were two heats for the Beginners, with a majority of the bikes being motocross bikes with knobby tires. Alexander had his vintage XL350 set up with a PirelJi front tire and an enduro-style rear tire. which seemed to hook up very well on the hard-packed dirt track. Open Pro action saw Eric Brouhard of Wyoming. Minnesota, ride his Crown Mortgage Rotax to a first-place finish, It took only one restart to get the Pros going. Willie Broten of New Market. Minnesota, took the holeshot on his Yamaha YZ444, only to see Brouhard go under him in turn four for the lead. On the next lap, Kurt Boehike of Cedar, Minnesota, rubbed his KTM with Broten's mount in turn four, leaving Broten on the ground and Boehlke in second place. Veteran dirt tracker Billy Hoffmeister of St. Paul, Minnesota. took his Rotax to third place. Brouhard, who was last year's MotoCity Raceway Indoor Open Pro Champion, has won two in a row now at the Dome, and he appears to be a threat to win this year's championship. There were 53 riders entered in this night's races. The track is becoming a favorite in the North Country, as it is perfectly prepared by the MotoCity crew. The next round promises to be another night of dose and exciting racing. $500.00 $300.00 $200.00 $100.00 $ 70.00 $ 50.00 30.00 S Ti•• World CMmpion udT..,..
