Willow Springs International Raceway Haskovec Victorious! By ERJC VINCENT ROSAMOND, CA, DEC. 15 Vincent Haskovec powered his way to victory in the Toyota Cup Unlimited Formula One Grand Prix race during the final round of Willow Springs Motorcycle Club action for 2002 at Willow Springs International Raceway. Starting at the back of the grid, Haskovec emerged in fourth after the first of 12 laps on his Dunlop-shod Suzuki GSX-R750. Chuck Graves, the 2002 Formula One class champion, grabbed the holeshot, followed by Jack Pfeifer and Jeremy Toye. Coming down the front straight to start lap three, Haskovec drafted and passed Toye for third. A lap later, Pfeifer used the same technique to pull past Graves for the lead, but Graves powered back into the lead exiting turn one. In the long turneight sweeper, Pfeifer repassed Graves on the outside of the turn and held on to the lead to start lap five. Graves and Pfeifer swapped the lead twice Barona Oaks MX more in the next half-lap, but rounding turn four, both Graves and Haskovec shot past Pfeifer. On the back straight. Haskovec powered past Graves to take the lead for the first Corfman Conquers Ramona time. Over the next few laps, Haskovec opened up a bit of a gap, but the battle for second remained intense. as Graves and Pfeifer were joined by Toye. All three were side by side down the front straight at the beginning of the final lap, with Pfeifer emerging in second out of turn one. Exiting turn nine and down the front straight, Toye drafted and pulled alongside Graves but came up just a few feet short at the line. leaving Haskovec with the win and Pfeifer second, Graves third and Toye fourth. In the Hyperciub WSMC Formula Two Grand Prix race, Robbie Dowie grabbed the lead, followed by Chris Siglin and Skye Girard. Midway through lap two, Kenny Kopecky accelerated around the outside of Girard in turn eight for third. Girard kept the pressure on, and halfway through the eight-lap event, he closed back up on Kopecky and attempted to draft and pass him down the front straight. He came up short, but midway through the next lap, Girard passed Kopecky to move back into third. Kopecky wasn't giving up, and on the final lap he again attempted to pass Girard in turn eight, but this time Girard had the horsepower to hoid on to finish third, behind Dowie and Siglin. Jason Perez was the fastest racer off the line in the 600cc Superstock event, but he was caught and passed by Graves between tums two and three, The early battle for third was between Jeff Dixon and Kopecky. Perez sat on Graves' rear tire for the six-lap event. looking for any opportunity to get back into the lead. Going into tum eight on the final lap, Perez closed the gap and showed Graves a tire but was unable to make the pass. Exiting turn nine for the last time. Perez pulled alongside Graves, but Graves had a horsepower advan· tage that gave him the race win. Perez was second and Dixon third. By RAMONA, CA, DEC. 15 With double points offered at the Barona Oaks Winter Series final, the event pulled in 270 riders. David Meyers and Cas Swift provided the fans with some fast·paced motocross action. However, the real highlight of the show was Kyle Corfman's clearing the infield 70-foot double on his KTM 65 SX. The event also made Garret Jackson happy, as he went home with the Quinsey Powersports XR50R that was raffled off to the riders that rode throughout the series. The high-flying Corfman cleared the monster infield double not just once but each and every lap of the 65cc Open class. Not only did he prove he could jump, he was also fastest in both matos, earning the overall. He later came out and took repeat wins in the 65cc (9-1 I) class, ahead of Nigel Johnson, who also placed second in the Open event. Swift continued his dominating ways as he took repeat wins in the 125cc Intermediate and 125cc (16-25) divisions. Swift rode a CRF450R in the 250cc Intermediate class and was able to beat Meyers to the checkers. Swift opted not to ride the second mota, handing Meyers the overall. Meyers also won the Open class. with repeat wins. When Meyers and Swift did get near each other. neither was con· tent with following, and there was plenty of passing to warm up the fans. Any time Joshua Huerta, Michael Hall and Jake Oswald get on the track. there will be plenty of racing action. In the Supermini class, Hall and Huerta were nose to tail throughout the six-lap race. Hall held the lead from the drop of the gate, but lapped traffic got in his way on the last lap, and Huerta rode around for the win. In the following moto, Huerta took off early, with Hall and Oswald in tow, The three riders freight-trained around the track. with Huerta taking the eventual overall. Neal DeGarmo should offer holeshot classes, as he was first off the gate each time it dropped. The jump on the pack gave him repeat wins in the 250cc Novice class and second in the I 25cc Open class. Austin Anderson seems to be adjusting to motocross, as he rode his KTM to repeat wins over Brent Benagas in the First-Timers (O-B) Shaft class. Stepping up a class, Dillon Garcia took repeat wins in the 65cc Intra To MX class, over Cody Lindenmayer. Results F-I: J. Vincent Haskovec (Suzl: 2. Jack pfeifer (Suz): 3. Chuck Graves (Yam): 4. Clark County Fairgrounds Ard, Johnson on Fire! By Reese's Riverside Trio By AUSTIN GATUN NEWTON, AL, DEC. 15 Cole Reese saved his best racing at Riverside MX for the track's final event of the year. The Montgomery, Alabama, rider guided his familiar RM250 to wins in the 250cc Band 16-29 classes. Then, aboard a borrowed YZ125, he topped the 125cc B class. Reese was the first racer to take the checkered flag in all six motos. Georgia rider Ben Fleetwood placed second to Reese in both of the B classes. Danny Brown Jr. put his Honda in second, behind Reese, in the 16-29 class. Yamahamounted Brandon Fuller was third. JUSTIN WHA.TON BATTLEGROUND, WA, DEC. 15 There was some hot action going at round five of the Promoto Promotions Clark County Arenacross Series. In the combined 125cc Pro and Intermediate main event. Twin Air/Spy~sponsored Joel Ard, on his new YZF250, got the holeshot, with Scotty Bloom, Andy Page and Jason Laudermilk right behind him, Ard held off both Bloom and Page and started to ride the track hard. Within a few laps, Ard was in total control. Bloom had Page all over him until lap four, when the two went through the over-andover jump but only Bloom came out into the supercross·style whoop section. Page didn't get his four-stroke running until he'd been lapped, so he waited and got in behind Bloom again and started to play with him. Eventually, Results 50 (0.8) Frr SHAFf: I.
