Suzuki was first at the checkered flag in three out of four motos. Patrick Johnson bested Bolt in the opening Preteen mota, earning the silver via his 1-3 finishes in that class. Garrett Boulware dominated the large 60cc (7-9) division. He moved up from third to win the opening mota, and in mota two, he took the lead away from James Jordan and held on to win with a perfect score. Jordan posted 3-2 finishes and claimed second in a points tie over Brad Wooten's 2-3 tally. Ben Boulware had a turn at the front at the start of moto one but eventually had to settle for a pair of fourthplace finishes and fourth overall. Boulware returned, however, to win both motos in the 50cc (7-8) division. The Over 30 division was headed up by a pair of thundering KTM four-stroke machines, piloted by Neeley Racing teammates Matthew Rutledge and Eric Burrell. Rutledge won both motos, ahead of Burrell, punctuating his performance with giant leaps over the finish-line jump. Results WMN: I. Nicole Caldwell (Yam). 50 SHAFT: J. Mlltthew Rodgers (Yam); 2. Chris got a great start and held off Jeff for the win, followed by Jim McMurren. As the Senior class lined up, everyone couldn't help but notice the beautiful Rotax of Dennis Voli. Richard Pollack, on his newly built XR650, made it clear he wasn't going to be denied the checkers in this one, and he went on for the win, followed by Big D's Voll and Dennis Cameron. In the Vet Over 35 class. Wilburn, on his 750cc Triumph, was once again the man of the hour. He and Pollack battled for the first three laps, with Wiiburn bringing home the bacon, followed by Pollack and then Royal Adderson. Mickey Azola made his return to racing in the Super Senior event. After the first turn. it was Marshall Jennings with the lead until Azola wore him down. Doug Douglas was making time on Jennings, but at the end, AlOia took the win, followed by Jennings and Douglas. It's all about going fast, and as the Open Pros took their positions at the stripe, every~ one was sure this one would be a barn-burner. Jimmy Wood, riding the bike Dan Butler rode last year, got the holeshot, with Jim Rosa and Travis Petton side by side. Going down the back straight, Rosa lost his rear end and slammed into the wall, sending himself and Petton down, with Petton getting the worse end of the deal. Petton was transported to the hospital for X-rays; it was discovered he had hyperextended his leg. On the restart, Adderson and Wood jumped out front, only to be challenged by Richard Pollack and Rosa. Wood had that DR Suzuki blistering around the tiny oval, and he checked out for the win, with Rosa getting by Pollack for second. (SUl). SR MINI (14.15): I Logan Bell (Suz): 2. Jake Owens (Yam): 3. K~vtn Victorville Short Track Wood Blazing in Victorville By JIM GRANT VICTORVILLE, CA, NOV. 24 More than 120 riders came to the high desert for some bar-banging action at the littie short track in Victorville, California. Event promoter Bruce Sanford said he was more than happy with the turnout and hopes for the remaining three winter races to be as good as this one. The 125cc and 250cc Novice classes ran combined, with a couple of little guys on their 80s showing they could beat those 250s. Devon Booher was flying as he took the checkers, followed by Andy Wood and, in his first time ever racing dirt track, Mark Seidfried, on a Trackmaster Ossa 250. The Amateur 250cc class was filled with big-time talent. Ian Faulds. on his new bike. led the pack from the start and never looked back, followed by Frank Aragaki and Alex Wood. In the Bomber contest, nice guy and former Ascot sensation Greg Wilburn showed everyone the fast way around the excellent John Aden·prepared short track on his Larry Wilburn TI500 Yamaha, beating John Lungren and Jim Ottele. The Classic Vintage race was a good one, with the Apple boys battling it out on vintage 62 JANUARY 8, 2003' II: U II: I match McAllister's Kawasaki. Suzuki-mounted Justin Jones won the battle for third. in the fmal tally, Chris Ltheland was victorious over Gary Sewell and Darrell Moore in the hotly contested Open Novice class. Ltheland was up for the challenge. as he was never tested once he established his lead. Metzger, though sleep-deprived, was on form as he jumped out in front in the Middleweight class. Mike Ulrich was away in second in the 12-lap final race, with Cernicky buried back in fifth. By lap four, Cernicky had progressed to second, making the final results Metzger, Cemicky and Ulrich. At 3:00 p.m. sharp, the second Premier mota rolled to the line. With Yarrow first, Cer· nicky second, Drew third, Ulrich fourth and Howe fifth in the first race, the stage was set for the contest for the combined overall. At the drop of the lIag, Cernicky got the jump over Drew, Yarrow and Ulrich. By the completion of one lap, Drew moved Cernicky back to second, with Yarrow still in third. Four laps in, Drew - the only rider capable of clearing the tabietop jump - had disappeared at the front. Yarrow, meanwhile, was all over Cernicky like a flea on a dog, hounding him till the end. However, Cernicky was tough, and by virtue of two second-place finishes he earned second overall. Drew took the overall win with a 3-1 score, while Yarrow (1-3) finished third. Storm Stadium Drew Takes 'em by Storm By JAl'IEY BLUNT LAKE ELSINORE, CA, NOV. 24 More than 15,000 people attended Saturday night's concert at the Storm baseball stadium. The highlight of the evening was a patented Mike Metzger display of freestyle talent. Part of the deal for obtaining Metzger's services was that the parking lot was to be used on the following day for a supermotard race - so, with help from Throttle, Storm Baseball, and MotoMaster USA's Paul Brent, Metzger and crew stayed up all night to create an eight-turn, paved course with two dirt sections, the most challenging of whjch was a monstrous 50~foot tabletop jump with a 7 . foot face approach. At 9:50 a.m., the first of 60 entrants took to the track for practice, and practice they did, for almost two hours! Everyone was given plenty of seat time. After a short lunch break, superpole was run, with Steve Drew taking top honors over Mark Cernicky, Rick Pearce, Casey Yarrow, Aaron Howe and Metzger. Drew turned a 35.05-second lap with an average of 61 mph. The Lightweight-class races were carbon copies, with Kawasaki jockey Brok McAllister shooting into the lead and checking out. Derek Brooks, on a Yamaha TT-R. gave chase valiantly but just didn't have enough motor to L{W: 1. Brok McAllister; 2. Justin ..Ion6; 3. Mario Celine. M/W: I. Mike MeUger. 2. Mark Cernicky; 3. Daniel's Ridge Motocross Fox Steals Oft with Two By MARK NEUENS TAYLORSVILLE, NC, NOV. 24 On another great day of racing at Daniel's Ridge Motocross, Kyle Mitchell took the holeshot in the 50cc Shaft class, followed by Matthew Carpenter and Sam Krum. Carpenter fell in behind Mitchell and looked for a place to get by, while Krum fell back a Iittie. Mitchell kept up the pace to hold off Carpenter in the first moto. In the second moto, Carpenter took the holeshot and left Mitchell playing catch-up. Mitchell maintained the pace he had set in the first moto and stayed close to Carpenter. As the moto went on, Carpenter slowed a little, allOWing Mitchell to make the pass and go 1·1 for first overall. In the Mini classes, Tyler Fox had no problem taking 1-1 wins in the 85cc (7-11) and Unlimited Mini classes. The real battle was going on behind him, between Thomas Neuens and Ellis McNeill.
