Mike Newton went two for two with a convincing win in the Senior Vintage final. Ossa rider Mark Gatlin of Fort Smith, Arkansas, threw out some good powerslides for the crowd and came in second. Coming out of retirement, Randall Davis was looking good on his Bultaco until he low-sided on the final lap. ending up third. In the combined Overall and Amateur Masters contest, the winner was Topeka, Kansas' David Barkley, aboard a 750cc Champion Yamaha. Super Senior honors went to overall runner-up John Varbel, while third place overall was the winner in the Open Twin Vintage Amateur class, Yamaha rider Gary Clingan. The second-placed Amateur Master, Gary Moore, was fourth overall. Bob Ives grabbed third in Super Senior portion, over Myron Combs. After a lap-one scuffle. Taylor again made off with a win in the 250/505cc Amateur 10lapper. Jeff Brewer and David Shrum, both local Yamaha riders, filled out the top three. The Open Pro Twin final was all Reggie "01' Pappy" Barkley and his Yamaha twin. Jim Strome tried to catch his fellow Kansan but fell short at the flag. Triumph pilot Delbert Collins recovered from a near-disastrous tangle with Speedy Arnett to finish third. The action-packed 600cc Vintage Pro final looked to be the property of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma's Rusty Bond until his chain came adrift for the second time of the meet, and he had to watch Strome take the checkers. Joe Debuler from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, steadily worked his ancient Bultaco up to the place position, over Yamaha riders Roy Hinkle and Collins. In 505cc Pro Sport action, the wheel·bang· ing first lap went to Adams Racing Rotax rider Danny Eslick. as did the next nine circuits. Jeremy Hinkle kept the flying Eslick in sight· barely· and came home second, over Russell Marlin and Jared Enright. In 505cc Expert racing, Chillicothe, Illinois' Rob Pearson put it to 'em after a first-lap pass of holeshot whiz Mike Hinds. Texan Jason Tyer worked his way up from a mid pack start to worry Pearson near the end, but the bucks and the gold went to Pearson. Hinds, who was suffering from a chronically dislocated shaul· der. faded to fourth, behind Joe Duvall but ahead of Bret Sowders. Hinds got his revenge in the Open Expert final. He got off the line first and stayed there this time. Tyer kept the pressure on but couldn't get around the rider from Claremore, Oklahoma. Sowders finished third, just ahead of Pearson and Duvall. Hinds' victory wheelie just about did him in. as his shoulder popped out upon touchdown. After a quick repair against a steel post, Hinds took the measure of the Mad Dog Mini field. Pearson appeared the be the man to beat after stuffing Jeff Bostic to earlier win the Mad Dog Mini Trophy Dash, but with four laps to go in the final, Hinds stuffed Pearson a good one in turn one. and that was all she wrote. Hinds went on to another victory, another wheelie - and another dislocation_ (Ahh, the life of a professional racer!) Tyer finished second, with Bostic third and Kevin and Mark Ellingsworth fourth and fifth.
