CMC Northwest Winter Series Round 4: Forster Uvestock Pavilion move over a triple, as Sanchez only doubled, to take over the lead. Meanwhile. Henderson had rebounded from his get·off and had made his way back into the third spot. behind Sanchez, but with the white flag waving, it was all Pennington. At the checkers, Pennington took the win. with Henderson making the pass on Sanchez for the second spot. Karmann and Jeremy Kneisly rounded out the top five. Pennington entered moto two with a ninepoint cushion over Sanchez, and although Stommel was only able to muster up a 10th· place finish in moto one, Pennington knew he had to still put in good shOWing. And that's exactly what he did, with a third-place start behind Henderson and Stommel, and with Sanchez a ways behind, around 10th. Things were looking good for Pennington. but out front it was all Henderson, who set out on a mistake-free venture and quickly put distance on the field, while Pennington was on a mission to reel in Stommel. On lap three, Pennington took advantage of a bobble by Stommel and took over the second spot. where he remained the rest of the moto. With Henderson taking a huge win, Pennington's secondplace finish sealed the deal on the champi· onship. The order behind him was Stommel. Karmann and Sanchez. Bv JIM AND JOSTIN ENOS TURLOCK. CA. DEC. 1 Oatfield Raceway played host to the fifth and final round of the 2002 AMP/GFI Super Gold Cup Octoberfest Series, presented by Capitol Yamaha of Sacramento, Swift Auto World and Acerbis. and it was Corey Pennington who took home a hefty piece of first· place golden hardware. With beautiful gold bowls up for grabs to the top three series finishers in each class, several championship titles came down to the wire; this was the case in the 125cc Novice class, in which Pennington, piloting an AII·American Suzuki/BR1/Fox/Rock Oil/Spybacked RM, capped off a successful series with a solid second·place finish on the day to capture the title. Coming into the final round, only four points separated the top four riders in the 125cc Novice class, and with a points-permoto format in place, anything could happen. Pennington, with 75 points, led the bunch, fol· lowed by Donny Stommel (73), who had won the first two rounds, and then Jared Morrison (73) and Jacob Sanchez (71). However. Mor· rison was a no-show in the morning practice session; it was later revealed that the Yamaha pilot had suffered a broken wrist in the prior day's practice. With Morrison out of the picture, the trio still had to contend with another fast rider: Garrett Henderson, who was making his only appearance of the series. Although not a factor for a title, the others knew that Henderson's scores could greatly affect the outcome of the day - and the series - for the top trio. Sanchez grabbed the first·moto holeshot, with Pennington, Henderson, Greg Karmann and C.J. Maria in tow. Sanchez, who was coming off a fresh win of his own at the prior round. looked good as he set a fast pace on the soft and loamy Oatfield circuit. A recent rain had left the track with plenty of deep moisture, and big corner ruts graced the track. Missing from the front of the field was Stom· mel, who had gotten caught in a pileup just a few turns in. remounting in dead last. As the lead pack came around to complete the first lap, Henderson snatched the lead spot. However, he went down just moments later after tucking the front end in a corner, so it was Sanchez who once again found himself out front, though he now had Pennington hot on his tail. OR, DEC. 6-7 While all of the buzz at the CMC Northwest Winter Series round-four doubleheader was about former AMA National and Supercross rider Ryan Huffman's Saturday appearance, Qut-of-staters Jason Weigand and Scot Sheedy were among the dominant forces at Forster Livestock Pavilion, The Yamahamounted Weigand, who made the trek north from his home in the Golden State, scored the 80cc (14·16) and Supermini·c1ass victories on both nights. Washington's Sheedy was likewise impressive, riding a Polini to wins in the Pee Wee (7-8) and 50cc Open classes, ahead of KTM rider Cory Paterson in both, on the two consecutive nights of racing at the Oregon State Fairgrounds. Local riders Steele Angle·Davidson and Jeremy McLain were also among the select few riders to win two or more classes; Mclain went four for four in his 250cc Junior and Open Amateur-class wins on Friday and Saturday. as did 125cc and 250cc Beginner class dominator Erik Meusling on Saturday. Ryan Leach has been impressive in his frequent appearances this season, and he put together two solid rides in Friday's 250cc Pro class to post the overall win. Leach had tough competition in the form of Washington's J.R. Vielle and Oregon's Gary Terlecki. but in the end it was a Leach decimation. Vielle led much of the first moto before succumbing to Leach's challenges and finishing second aboard his Honda CRF450R. In moto two, Leach grabbed the holeshot; and the rider from Albany. Oregon, main· tained the point position to the finish to cap off the overall win. while Vie lie (2-2) and Terlecki (3·3) trailed. In the adjoined Intermediate class, Eric Rogers and Ed Wagner split moto wins, with Rogers coming out on top of moto two as well as overall. Speaking of decimations, Weigand darted to the head of the field at the unleashing of the first Supermini moto and, much like he would do all weekend, put large amounts of ground on the competition while taking his wins. Suzuki rider Drew Mitchell, one of the two l1-year-old riders in the field, trailed Weigand in moto two to gamer second overall, followed by Aaron McClinton, series points leader Travis McClinton, and the youngest rider in the pack, Glenn Prestholt. 10. Sheedy came back on Saturday night to hammer the competition once again in the small·wheel classes. making his lengthy trek from eastern Washington well worth his while by taking 1·1 wins in the Pee Wee (7·8) and 50cc Open classes. Husky rider Brandon Barber chased Sheedy in both motos, although Sheedy's advantage was of several seconds, and Barber placed second both times out. Damon Barton (4·3), Jonathan Andrew (3-4) and Coby Ayres (5-5) filled out the top five overall. In the younger of the two combined classes, Polini riders again ruled, paced by Garrett Christoffersen and Brayden Massey, who packed a one-two punch in the 50cc (0·6) age division. Sheedy and Barber were set to wage battle again. this time in the half·time Husky Chal· lenge race, although Sheedy withdrew, and then Barber easily won, followed by Barton and R.J. Oleman. Barber, the only rider who contests the Italian marque on a regular basis, used his familiarity with the Bill's Motorcyclesbacked machine to easily post his second consecutive win of the series. Huffman, who hasn't ridden competitively since late last summer after an injury sidelined what had been an impressive comeback bid until that point, was the lone Professional rider on Saturday. However, Huffman put on a clinic with his aerial assault of the 125cc and 250cc Pro/Intermediate classes. Huffman blitzed the whoop section like no other rider has thus far this season (with the possible exception of Tiger Lacey) in his runaway wins of the 250cc class, ahead of Jessy Williams. Huffman's first 125cc moto wasn't quite as successful, though; while gaining huge ground on the competition, his YZ's front number plate dangled dangerously, and the rider from Roseburg pitted briefly. This allowed both David Sibley and Jason Lytle to finish ahead of the former National number-28 rider in moto one. Huffman came back to thrash the competition in moto two and secure a line-up spot in the upcoming Castrol Challenge race in late December. Sibley finished second to Huffman. which was good for the 125cc Junior-class win, ahead of Lytle, Nathan Whit~ low, and the top-placing Intermediate rider, Ian McLaren.
