WSMC comer workers disposed of the debris, the race went on. Three racers started to break from the pack: Honda rider Watts, followed by Dowie and Jason Perez. At the beginning of the third lap, Dowie, on his LP USA-sponsored Suzuki, tried a pass on Watts; they went side by side through tum two. Everybody held their breath, and Dowie finally slipped past to lead the rest of the lap. Perez started falling back, unable to keep up. Watts sniffed Dowie's exhaust fumes through the third lap, getting closer and clos- er, trying to draft the leader into tum nine, a sweeping, fast corner turn that leads to the front straight. Finally, Watts edged his Honda past Dowie to lead the fourth lap. Their fast pace (in the low 1:23s) shows how hard they were working. Dowie got past Watts again just a few eaTners later. Things were a bit less explosive through lap six. making for a welcome breather before the final effort to the checkered nag. And it was, indeed, an exciting effort: On the seventh lap, Dowie and Watts exchanged the lead a couple of times; frankly, it was hard to know what was happening without a good set of binoculars. Watts led on the front straight. but Dowie drafted him for a successful pass on the inside of turn one. Through the next few corners, Dowie and Watts kept battling side by side. Watts managed to get a better drive out of turn six, stretching out a lead of two bike lengths, but Dowie fought back, showing the leader his front wheel through turns eight and nine. Still side by side - once again! - wringing every ounce of power from their engines, they rocketed toward the finish line; when they blew past the checkered nag, nobody knew who had won. It was that close. The official race results, released half an hour later, showed Dowie in first place, Watts in second and Perez in third. The Toyota Cup Unlimited Formula One race, which was tame by comparison, was nonetheless worth seeing, thanks to the pres· ence of Jake Zemke and Roger Hayden; the two Parts Unlimited-sponsored Honda racers presented an awesome challenge for series regular Chuck Graves, who led from the pole. His lead was short-lived, though: Jake Zemke passed the Yamaha rider on the second lap and stayed in the lead until race's end. Hayden was the third man on the podium. Carlsbad Raceway Norell Nabs It at CALVMX Finale By STEVE CARD CARLSBAD, CA, OCT. 20 The inaugural season of the California Vintage Motocross Club came to a close with a double-points extravaganza. For riders hoping to pad their points lead, or perhaps to overcome a points deficit, this was their last, best chance. Due to the cooler temperatures, the track failed to absorb the water from pre-race preparations. The resuJt was a course resem· bling a Slip 'N Slide. Numerous riders found themselves taking unintentional soil samples throughout practice and the early motos. The Grand Prix Two Expert division had some very fast riders entered. As in previous races, the main battle was between the Husqvama-mounted Larry Huff and Torey Norell. When the starting board tumed sideways and the gate dropped for the first mota, Huff and Norell rocketed into the first turn. Norell emerged with a slight lead over Huff. In third was Husky rider Dave Fisher, followed by Suzuki jockey Roger Kakos and Malco rider Jim Robinson. Going up the iong uphill straight, the high-jumping Norell attained a slight lead over Huff. Trailing the front-runners, Robinson passed Kokos for fourth as the pack finished the first lap. Laps two through five featured an exhibition of Huff closing on Norell on the straightaways and Norell gaining ground back through the comers and over the jumps. At the checkered nag, Norell nabbed first. Huff finished a close second, with Robinson blitzing his way into third place. Mota two featured some fierce racing. Norell grabbed a slight holeshot entering tum one. Behind him, a heavy dose of handlebarbanging saw riders going over berms and struggling to sort themselves out. This close· quarters battle allowed Norell to pull a large lead going into the back section of the track. At the end of lap two, Huff worked his way around Robinson for second. As Norell built an insurmountable lead, Huff and Robinson dueled for the runner-up spot. Despite Robinson's best efforts and rus German machine, he was unable to find his way around the highly skilled Huff. Norell clinched the overall, with Huff in second and Robinson garnering the third-place accolades. In the Grand Prix One Novice class, the action was between Husqvama-mounted Mark Holloway and Yamaha TT-500 rider Paul Claybaugh. At the start of mota one, Claybaugh's big four-stroke took an early lead, with Holloway close behind. By the end of lap one, Holloway had worked his way around Claybaugh and opened a slight lead over the rest of the class. For the remaining laps, Claybaugh's booming thumper continued to press Holloway for the lead. Unable to get around the Husky pilot, Claybaugh settled for second, while Husky man Steve Gallegos finished a distant third. Mota two was essentially decided at the start. Holloway grabbed the holeshot, while Claybaugh was hampered by a bad start. Despite his best efforts, Claybaugh was unable to make up the distance between himself and Holloway, whose consistent riding garnered him first-place honors. Claybaugh took the runner-up position, while Gallegos secured the third-place laurels. Attention s R~c~rs P~clal L,mited F~'EE O~fer V,deo Results IRONMAN VlNT INT: 1 Dave Scourfield (Cl): 2.
