Yamaha-mounted Reggie Starrett. The 125cc Beginner class featured the closest race of the night. Honda rider Robby Winiarczyk edged out Kawasaki jockey Tim Ledford for the win, but it wasn't easy. These guys changed the lead as many as three times per lap. Whenever the leader made a mistake, the guy running second would cash in. Greg Peterson finished third and got some good lessons whenever the leaders were still in sight. The Pee Wee Shaft riders also had a good race. KTM rider Jeremy Byers and Jake Elder went back and forth, with Byers taking the last-moto win. Caleb Sullivan brought his Yamaha in third. Jake Elder was pumped and went out and won both 50cc (4-6) motos on his KTM, over David Riehl's Katoom and Caleb Sullivan's Husky. Another class that featured some good racing was the eocc Beginners. The top three are in the top four points places in the series. D.J. Mitchell continued his winning ways on his Kawasaki, with Yamaha-mounted Brett Barrow in second and Honda rider Brian Elrod rounding out the podium. Emerson was the best of the rest, as he pushed his KTM 250 SX to a pair of secondplace finishes to earn the second-place hon~ ors, while Superfeet's Tim Norton came in third overall after posting consistent 4-4 scores. Brian Pappalardo (6-3) was fourth aboard his Kawasaki KX125, and Hondamounted Greg Pagen (3-6) filled out the top five. Andrew Jefferson was in control of the Over 40 Masters cUvision, and his 1-1 finishes and overall class win served to prove that fact. Jefferson gated well in each stanza aboard his Pro Circuit Yamaha thumper and was at the front of the pack on every lap of both motos. Paul Needles came in second with a solid 4-2 showing to claim the runner-up position, while former factory pilot Rich Eierstedt (3-6) was third. Chaparral's Fred Nichols (7-5) rolled in fourth, and Dirt Bike's Pete Murray (2-10) finished up in fifth after a rough second moto. In the 125cc Junior race, John Minert, on his new 2003 Kawasaki KX125, took the overall class win on the day with a fine 1-2 score. Dave Freeman rode to a second-place finish with 3-1 scores, while Dan Alamangos took his YZ250F to a third-place finish with 2-4 rides on the day. Whitney Murphy put in two good motos aboard his Orange County Suzuki/AFAM/3-Brothers Racing-backed Suzuki RM 125 and finally finished up in fourth with a 4-3 tally. Mark Anderson's 5-5 finishes were good for fifth overall. The 80cc Beginners were bested by Yamaha-mounted Billy Musgrave, who came up with a convincing ] -1 performance for the day. Musgrave had to work early on in each mota, but he eventually prevailed handily both times out. Taylor Freeman (2-3) took home the second-place brass, and Nick Tucker (4-2) filled out the top three. Caden Probst (3-4) finished in fourth, while Justin Tucker (5-6) was fifth. The battles in the Mini ranks have been heating up in recent weeks, with tight racing and large gates of competitive rid~ ers. With promoter Frank Thomason's addi~ tion of a new 65cc class at the track, the heat is only going to get turned up in the future. Results P/W SHAfT: 1. Jeremy Byers (KTM); 2. Jake Elder (KTM); 3. B V MARK NEUENS EAST BEND, NC, OCT. 19 At round 11 of the AMA District 29 Summer/ Fall Series, Justin Branch took the holeshot in the 50cc Shaft contest, followed by Matthew Burkeen, who quickiy took over the lead position. They were followed by Austin Faulk, Bubba Stone and Kyle Mitchell. Faulk and Stone got together but stayed up and kept going. Stone went to work on Faulk, who was behind Branch, setting them up and taking both riders in a quick move in the corner to take second place. Faulk then made the pass on Branch for the third position, while out front, Burkeen was building a commanding lead. Branch, meanwhile, was staying right behind Faulk, looking to get his spot back. Josh Leninger worked his way up to Mitchell and made the pass for fifth. Branch made the pass on Faulk in the straightaway to take third. The first moto finished up as Burkeen, Stone, Branch, Faulk and Leninger. In the second moto, Stone took the holeshot, followed by Burkeen and Branch, and then Faulk, Leninger and Mitchell. Stone ran a perfect race, hoiding off Burkeen to take first overall, with Burkeen second. Faulk made a great pass on Branch at the finish line to take third overall, and Branch was fourth. Leninger had a bad tum and stalled his bike. While he was getting help getting the bike started, Mitchell went by. Leninger was up and going but didn't have enough laps left to catch Mitchell, who took fifth overall. Leninger was sixth. In the 85cc (12-13) and (14-15) classes, three number ] 2s were rolling at East Bend. Stephen Winters pulled out front, followed by Josh Thomas and Cameron Rowe. Thomas and Rowe, aboard Kawasakis, and Winters, on a Honda, were all riding number-12 bikes. As the season closes out, the last race of the Saturday Night Series took place at Calhoun Supercross. Everyone is adding to their points for the season finale at Bremen Race Park, to be held the following week. In the 125cc B class, Dash Lyle showed everyone what cornering speed is. Leaning over till his handlebar was almost dragging on the ground in the corners with the throttle wide open does work, as Lyle demonstrated. Dalas Conner and Broc Hinkley upheld the Yamaha honors in the class, but they needed a picture of L:yle's Suzuki to keep him in sight. Trials Training Center Young Schools the Youngsters at the 58K Bv AlAN BECHARD SEQUATCHIE, TN, OCT. 19-20 Ryan Young came down south and held school for several of the up-and-coming Champ riders at the 10th annual 58K trials, held at the Trials Training Center in beautiful Sequatchie, Tennessee. The Champ riders were all riding the trial in a group, working together and learning from the master. They had many obstacles to overcome but, in section 11, a rock over 5 feet high with less than a bikelength of run had to be the highlight. It was amazing to watch these riders attack this wall and go over the top so smoothly. Many of the top riders in the Southeast, including several from the National Championship Series, make this annual pilgrimage to what may be one of the premier regional events. "I still love to ride and look forward to any event that I can compare my current level to some of the current champ riders," Young said. "It is kind of like seeing where you would finish in the National Championship if you were still competing. I was really looking forward to competing against Chris Florin and Chuck Walker. I really pump myself up for these events and give it 120 percent. My '03 2.9 Sherco/Michelin/Maxima/Renthal-sponsored bike worked better than any bike I have ever owned before. I was able to find traction where nobody else could, and the new, highrevving ignition that comes on the new '03 allowed me to use second gear on those very close and slow approaches and just rocket up over the slippery rocks. Hats off to a great event and incredible sections." Team Beta USA/B&J Racing's Adam LeGere showed why he's a current nominee for most improved rider of the year in STRA by placing second on both days in the eJ;(tremely competitive Expert class. He was seen working around the loop, paying close attention to the riders in the Champ class and picking up pointers. As usual, the Alex "twins" battled hotly throughout the day in the Novice division, with extremely low scores. Day one was won by Alex Sedley, while Alex Conklin took home the gold on Sunday. The Youth classes were well-attended. The Trials Training Center: Chris Florin placed second, behind Ryan Young, on both days of the 10th annual 58K trials, held in Sequatchie, Tennessee. A class was won by 6-year-old Dean Bechard, who was definitely on his game, riding very well and showing his mastery over his bike. He went on to enter the Novice class on Sunday and completed about three-quarters of the first loop. Young Blake Callis was looking smooth and stylish on his Beta Minitrial en route to the Youth B win, followed by the lovely Shelby Ligon, who was also riding well. Adam Johnson, a newcomer to the sport, showed well on his little enduro machine, placing third in class. The Bussings, owners of the Trials Training Center, hosted a free cookout for all the riders and spectators. Throughout the evening, many folks exchanged stories of their exploits and other tali tales of the day over the warmth of the campfires and the friendship that trials engenders. Willow Springs International Raceway Photo Finish for Dowie and Watts Bv BIAS KISIC ROSAMOND, CA, OCT. 20 What an action· packed race weekend at Willow Springs International Racewayl Robbie Dowie and Mark Watts took the checkered flag literally side by side in the HyperciubWSMC Formula Two race, at round 10 of the Willow Springs Motorcycle Club season. The start was uneventful; all the racers leaned for turn one, forming an orderly procession. However, just a few seconds later, a rider in the lead group tried to pass two competitors at once in the technical section between turns three and four, resulting in a low-side - thankfully, with no injuries.
