Hall Scorching at Heat/Freeze MX East Bend Speedway By ROBERT K Neese Sweeps East Bend SIERRA VISTA, AZ, OCT. 20 Five professionals came to compete at round five of the Heat/Freeze MX eight-race series at the NOMADs track. Local Pros Mike Calhoun and Thomas Stuckey battled with Frank Febbo, who raced with the Pros as the only entrant in the Vet Pro class, as well as Pros Justin McMurrich and Dan Bonham. Calhoun, a motorcycle technician at Sierra Cycles in Sierra Vista. completed the first lap of the first moto in second, his Kawasaki 250 sandwiched between the booming 450cc Hondas of Bonham in first and McMurrich in third. After a weak start, Stuckey was fifth, behind Febbo's 450cc Honda. As McMurrich pressured Calhoun. Stuckey passed Febbo on lap two for fourth and began closing on McMurrich. Then, McMurrich went low in a corner and spun out, allowing Stuckey by. It appeared Stuckey was catching up to Calhoun, but Stuckey gained no ground over the last few laps of the seven·lap moto. Caihoun finished a solid second, and Stuckey finished third. At the start of the second moto, McMurrich had the lead down the start straight, followed by Calhoun. Bonham bulled his way past Calhoun in the first hairpin corner to take over second, followed by Febbo and then Stuckey, who was again the last rider down the start straight. For two laps, Stuckey went ail over the track, looking for a way around Febbo. Sometimes Stuckey would make the pass, only to be overtaken again with some crafty counterpasses by Febbo. Finally Stuckey made a pass stick. and Febbo coasted in the rest of the laps. Sierra Vista's Jarrod Hail put away the 250cc Beginner class with two first-place fin· ishes, and probably took over the Heat/Freeze series points lead from Tucson rider Jake Kloos. Hail trailed Kloos by 11 points going into the fifth round on Sunday. Hail got the first-moto holeshot, ahead of Diego Mendoza and Kloos. Hail extended his lead before Kloos got around Mendoza on the first lap, but a definitive battle for the lead spot for the race and the series points lead wouldn't happen until moto two. Kloos spun out in a comer and then stalled his bike. It took a few kicks to get his bike restarted; by then, Hall was way ahead. Kloos finished the first moto in ninth. In the second moto, Hall proved two things: first, that he's a pretty good starter, getting the holeshot again, while Donny Mitcheil foilowed Hail out of the first tum, with Kloos in third; and second, that he was a faster rider than Kloos on this day. Kloos got around Mitchell before the first lap was over to take a stab at cutting the lead Hall had already built up, but Hall kept moving further and further ahead throughout the four-lap race for the moto win and first overall. Kloos went home with fifth overall. Results 50 BEG: l. Stlayne Klinger (IITM); 2. C.J. Galloway (KTM): 3. Emll10 Tapia (Yam); 4. Spencer Packard (KTM); 5. Ian Lundberg (Hon). 60 BEG: 1. By MARK NEUENS EAST BEND, NC, OCT. 20 The rain held off to let East Bend Speedway get round 12 of AMA District 29's Summerl Fall Series in the books. In 250cc A action, five riders came out of the gate and Brandon Langdon took the holeshot, followed by Jim Neese, Wesley Sapp, Mark Wagner and Allen Alford. They were stagger-started in front of the 125cc B class, with Shawn Neilsen taking the holeshot in that class, followed by Zach Kutschenko and Michael Thomas. In the 250cc A portion, Langdon was still holding the lead position, with Neese in tow. Neese followed Langdon for the first two laps and then made his move, taking long jumps in the back-to-back doubles to move beside Langdon. Though Langdon tried to hold it, Neese took over the lead. Wagner went by Sapp for third, Wagner made a aggressive move at the finish line to take over Langdon for the second spot behind Neese. Vincent made the move past Smith for the third spot. Neese and Wag· ner hit some lapped traffic; Wagner had some trouble getting by, but Neese didn't and put some distance between them. Neese took first, followed by Wagner. Langdon, Sapp and Alford. In the 125s, Neilsen was followed closely by Kutschenko. Christopher Smith was third, followed by Don Vincent. Kutschenko was pushing Neilsen but couldn't find a place to get by. Neilsen held off Kutschenko for first in class, followed by Vincent and Smith. In the second 250cc A moto, Neese took the holes hot, followed by Alford, Wagner, Sapp and then Langdon, who got hung up on a tire. Sapp was on the move, passing Wagner and setting his Sights on Alford. After finding an opening, Sapp took over the second position, behind Neese. Wagner took advantage of the battle and aiso made the pass on Alford. Wagner made the pass on Sapp while Neese was building a comfortable cushion between himself and second-placed Wagner. Neese took the checkered fiag, followed by Wagner, Sapp, Alford and Langdon. The second 125cc B holeshot went to Neilsen, again followed by Kutschenko, but he made a hard drive to stay side by side with Neilsen. Kutschenko was looking for a place to pass Neilsen around every corner, but Neilsen shut him down each time. Finally, Kutschenko made a way around and took over the lead. Kutschenko held the lead but stalled out after the whoops, and Neilsen took over first. Kutschenko got going again quickly and held the second spot, in front of Vincent. Neilsen took the win, with Kutschenko second, foliowed by Vincent, Matthew Boyer and Thomas. Ali the riders at East Bend Speedway extended a special thank-you to the Kernersville Rescue Squad for taking the time to come out and be on the scene in case they were needed. Hear; 4. OCT. 20 The weather may be cooling off, but the racing heated up at round nine of the EJ Monte RV/Southwest Vintage Racing Group series at Glen Helen Raceway Park. Former CMC ace Ty Swartz, aboard a 1981 Yamaha YZ125, schooled the field in ali three classes he entered, walking away with the Ironmllln, Evolution 125cc, and Over 30 Expert honors. Can-Am-mounted teen Tyson Talkington did, however, give thirtysomething Swartz cause to worry in the 30-minute lronman race, as he used his 250cc power to jump out in front. It was a classic match of "youth and enthusiasm" vs. "old age and treachery." The two combatants ran nose to tail, lap after lap, with Swartz making major time in the corners and Talkington pulling away at the first hint of a straight. As the pumpkin-orange Can-Am danced from side to side in a bad-suspension mambo, Swartz attempted to capitalize several times, only to be rebuffed by Talkington's liberal use of throttle and obvious disregard for his own personal safety. (God, it's great to be young!) It wasn't until the white-fiag lap that Swartz had a real shot at making a pass stick. As the pair reeled in a lapper approaching the finish- Y .. I e n e _ s his line and stifling his drive, a snickering Swartz slipped into a lead he'd never relinquish. Swartz took the win, while Talkington learned a lesson he'li no doubt remember in the future. Other standouts on the day included a pair of father-and-son teams: Blair and Jason Risnes won the Evolution One (Pre-1978) and Modem Support Novice divisions, while Phil and Skip Benedict carded second in Pre-1968 and first in the Decade Novice classes. The Over 40 Vintage class was one for the highlight reels, though not for the normal reasons. The race settled into a rather mild-mannered game of foliow-the-Ieader, with Maico man Richard Hill leading and Mike Johnstone pursuing on his BSA for almost the entire moto. Cresting the tabletop jump before the checkers, Johnstone finaliy made his bid for the lead and the win, panic-revving the BSA toward the fiag. He narrowly edged out Hill for the victory, but he was now faced with the dilemma of a rapidly approaching jump and woefully insufficient brakes. Much to the crowd's surprise, Johnstone cleared the jump in grand style - almost. Johnstone scattered fiagmen and motorcycle parts for a 20-yard radius, and when the dust settled, he was somewhat the worse for wear - not quite ready for the "meat wagon," but almost. His demeanor (and iap times) for the remainder of the day were understandably subdued. Results IRONMAN WiT NOV: I. Mike Johnstone (BSA), IRONMAN EVO NOV: I. Rick Huffaker (Suz). IRONMAN EVe tNT; I.
