In the 2S0cc Pro ranks, "Doctor" Doug Dubach took both moto wins and the overall dass victory for the day aboard his new White Brothers/Dr. D/O'Neal-backed Yamaha YZ4S0F. Dubach ripped the holeshot in both motos and, after having early battles with KTM-mounted Scott Sheak, he handily pulled away in each contest for the win. Sheak looked fast on his new orange thumper but wasn't quite up to the pace of the leader, and he settled for second place both times out to earn the runner-up honors on the day. Honda CFF4S0R riders Sean Pagel and Paul Kellen diced it up for the third-place slot, with Pagel eventually taking it with a 4-3 tally. In the Over 40 Masters dass, Honda CR2S0-mounted Paul Needles took home the overall win after putting up a perfect 1-1 on the scoreboard. Rich Eierstedt has retumed to racing after a layoff, and he put in a 3-2 score to finish up in second place aboard a YamahZ! VZ2S0. After a serious injury (a broken back), Too Tech Racing Suspension's Bob Johnson is working himself back into racing form, and he filled out the top three positions with a consistent S-3 effort on the day. Dan Austin (2-7) was fourth, and Mark Hall (6-4) rolled in fifth. The always-interesting 12Scc Junior division had a lucky 13 competitors this week. and it was the bright yellow Suzuki of Randy Hill that was out front in both motos as he took the overall class win with a couple of first-place finishes. Justin Weeks was the best of the rest, as he chased Hill to the checkered flag both times out for the runner-up slot. Whitney Murphy is returning to action after recuperating from a broken hand, and he put in a couple of solid motos this week to earn the third-place position with a 3-3 score aboard his AFAM Suzuki RM 12S. Gavin Trippe (S-4) came in fourth, and Ricky Oliver (8-S) was fifth. In the Over 40 Intermediate dass, Tim Murphy took the overall class win after running up front all day and eventually finishing with a consistent 2-2 effort aboard his Honda CR250. Rudy Chavez took home the second- 125 I/'IT: 1. Olff Jenrungo (Vam). 125 PRO: I. Kyle Mace (Kaw). 250 BEG: I. PhJlip Petrik. (Yam): 2. Tetrer'l« Russell (Yam); 3. Ryan Amaradlo (Yam); 4. """ion Log Road MX Laphon Locks It Up at Log Road By BART NEWMAN Glen Helen Raceway Park: Doug Dubach topped the 250cc Pros during REM Saturday motocross action In San Bernardino, California. 90 NOVEMBER 13, 2002' cue • D n • _ os BRONSON, MI, OCT. 13 Matt Laphon was the man of the day in the 85cc (9-13) class, blasting all other riders in a display of speed and skill. Meanwhile, Jarrica Mitchell was the woman of the day, topping the Woman's Junior class at the final event of the season at Log Road MX. Laphon got a good jump off the gate to pull the 8Scc (9-13) pack into tum one, with Tim Walker, David Slowik and Bubba Cline in the hunt. Laphon used the power of his CR80 to clear the Winner's Circle Yamaha triple jump and pull a small lead on Walker, while Cline found an inside line in the fast sweeper to move past Slowik and grab third. By lap three of the five-lap affair, Laphon was flexing his muscles and had a lead that he would carry all the way to the end of the moto to take a convincing win. Cline and Walker had a good battle early in the moto before a get-off slowed Cline's charge to the front, giving Walker the runner-up spot at the checkered flag. Cline recovered to finish third, with Slowik in fourth. In moto two, Cline timed the gate perfectly and led the gang around turn one, with Laphon nipping at his heels all the way, while Walker was pushing Slowik to move into third. Cline was able to hold Laphon at bay for the first three laps before Laphon made his move in the very cool black-dirt section to take over first. Cline wasn't going to give up without a fight and was pushing Laphon in nearly every corner, trying to take back first place. The race for third was also a close one, as Walker and Slowik went at it until a great line in the fast sweeper gave Walker the advantage he needed to control third until the end of the moto. Out front, Laphon would not be denied, taking the moto win and the overall, dropping Cline back to second in the day's final tally. In the Woman's Junior class, J8rrica Mitchell was queen for the day, grabbing both moto wins over Kaylyn Keifer and Mallori Majewski. The race for second wasn't so cut and dried, as Majewski won the battle in moto one, turning in a great ride aboard her new Suzuki 65. Keifer didn't let the yellow streak in moto one get her down and came back in moto two to beat Majewski in the all-important second moto to claim second overall. As the Log Road MX season came to a close, riders exchange stories, smiles, and plans for next year's motocross season. The Millers and Beerbowers thanked all the riders that helped make the 2002 Log Road MX season one of the best yet. Results 50 (4-6) SHAFT: 1. Kyler Gimenez: (KTM): 2. Dillon Anley (KrM): 3.
