Costa Mesa Speedway: Mike Faria leads Josh Larsen en route to the Scratch maln-event victory in Costa Mesa, California. dust in the wooded sections, it was more of a stop-and-go type of course. The motocross track was out in the open, making for a good spectator section of the trail. KTM of Fayetteville rider Josh Weisenfels garnered the holeshot in the Pro class. Weisenfels used this advantage to hold back all attempts for the lead. Meanwhile, Clint Carr and Matt Burnett tangled in the first comer, and then on it was a tight race between the two for the day. Carr was quick to recover from the mishap and gave pursuit. At the end of the day, Carr narrowed the gap on leader Weisenfels and pulled off the second overall position. Burnett road a consistent race, staying close behind Carr, and despite the dust he was able to finish in third place in the Pro class. In the A class, there was a three-way battle going on between riders Brian Sanders, Trav Tacker and Mike Snook. For the first half of the race, these guys were neck and neck, battling for the first-place position. The true test was to see who could withstand the heat and the dust. Midway through the race, ironman Sanders retained the lead, holding off the other riders and even putting some distance on them. Sanders took on the challenging course and came out on top for the class win and took third overall. The Acerbis/Renthal/HJC Helmets-sponsored Weisenfels ended the day with the overall title, despite the dust and the fact that for his last three laps he was racing on a flat rear tire. Weisenfels stated that his KTM 200 has tons of power and worked great for him. He used filter skins to help fight the dust, and the orange machine did the rest. was flying. ursen was still managing to keep the lead, but the two were very close. It came down to a drag race out of turn four, and it was literally a photo finish, with the nod going to Faria by less than the width of a tire. The Handicap main had Yarrow all alone on the 20. Dukie Ermolenko, Northrup and Randy "The Rocket" DiFrancesco were on the 30. McConnell and Brant were on the 40, and Faria and Larsen shared the 50. Yarrow got a great start on the field and he went for it. The Northern Califomia rider let it all hang out, and he put a good deal of real estate between himself and the rest of the field. Difrancesco tried to put some pressure on but ended up side- lined and limped around to get the finish. Faria, after his great Scratch ride, also fell victim to bike problems early on. Ermolenko and Brant battled every lap for the coveted second spot. It was close, but it would be Ermolenko with the place money. Yarrow had his second Handicap main win at Costa Mesa this season. Behind Brant, it was McConnell, Larsen, Northrup. DiFrancesco and Faria. The Jones boys, Danny and Chris, put together a great ride to win the Sidecar main event, over Scott Cole and Chris Sears. Third went to the other Jones boy and his fiancee, Brandi McElroy. Mike Fontaine and Scott McElroy were fourth. John Stunkard padded his points lead with a win in the Support main, over John DeFries and Rudy Laurer. Steve Murray topped Tom Rossano and Bryan Baichtal in Support B racing. Krystai "Chicks Rule" Cramer showed the boys how it's done as she won the Junior Speedway main, over Dario Galvin and Ricky Wells. Results Results SCR: I. MIke Forie (Jew): 2. Josh Larsen (JIIW); 3. Frog Pond Grand Prix Weisenfels Leaps to Frog Pond Win By SAM BARREn PINE RIDGE, AR, SEPT. 8 Round eight of the Arkansas Hare Scramble Championship Series was the Frog Pond Grand Prix, which is usually held in the southern part of Arkansas, but this year it was moved to the Pine Ridge track, which is centrally located in the state. Promoter Josh Cook took on all the elements, and it was a hot, dry race. There was II poor turnout due to the weather, but the event went on without a hitch. The dust was heavy and the treils were like powder. Several riders claimed the event was fun and challenging but very dangerous, due to the dust. The event was geared to tight woods and a motocross track but, due to the 76 OCTOBER 9, 2002' DUD I Stoney Lonesome M/C Clubgrounds Stoney Not So Lonesome By ALAN BECHARD COWMBUS, IN, SEPT. 14-15 With more than 75 Trials riders competing, the Stoney Lonesome Motorcycle Clubgrounds were buzzing with activity, as the weekend featured two events for the youth and two events for the adult-level riders. .. n e wv s The Trialmaster for the youth, Cal Blumhorst. laid out a challenging set of five sections following a small loop around the parking area. There was both an A and B line, and the contestants ran four loops. The sections were designed to develop and enhance the basic riding skills of young riders, emphasizing the bike control for which trials riders are famous. The sections included small uphills and downhills, tight tums, off-camber hillsides, and some fair-sized iogs for the young contestants. The same loop was used on both Saturday and Sunday, but different sections were used, to challenge the riders. Conditions were dry and dusty on Saturday and wet and slick on Sunday. There was a wide range of riding abilities on display, but the common theme for all was the great time they hed interacting with eech other, their parents, and the enthusiastic crowd that was there to support them. Max Eden of Team Sherco USA held the banner high, taking home the overall win in the Youth A class. He also distinguished himself riding In the Novice class of the adult trials. Beta rider Jacob Champlin was the overall winner in the Youth B division. He showed great poise navigating the sections on his ST50. The Trialmaster for the mllin events was Jim Zuroske. He and his crew of fellow trials enthusiasts set out to make this one to be remembered! There were 10 sections, with four loops run each day. All the classes had their hands full navigating the course and trying to overcome the terrain. One highlight of the day was certainly the appearance of six-time National Champion Ryan Young; riding in the Exhibition class, he dazzled spectators, observers and fellow riders with his mastery of his new 2003 Sherco 290. On one section, he pulled a 180 flick-tum while jumping onto a 2-foot-diameter log; he then rode the length of the log, jumping out into the air at the end and clearing a large ditch, to the amazement of all who witnessed it. Young explained that he rides select local trials in an exhibition class to motivate his fellow riders and demonstrates some of the advanced techniques that are possible. A large tumout in the Advanced class led to some close contests, with several ties for position and the winners determined by their number of cleans. Many scores came down to the last loop to determine the winner. Steve Smock, "The Master of Wheels,· put on an incredible show of mastery over various bicycles and unicycles, the likes of which most folks have never seen, providing the evening's entertainment on Saturday. He.even recruited Young to assist in the demonstration and between the two of them they had the spectators on the edges of their seats. Results Saturdly CHAMP: I. Jim Gawne (Man): 2.
