Witmer Blasts to
Sandmaster Finale Win
Hot Springs Raceway

MEDARYVILLE, IN, SEPT. 8
Despite an unusually long dry spell in northem
Indiana, riders attending Leisure Time's race
on Sunday were surprised at the track conditions. Thanks to nonstop watering by Jack
Schutt, Buck Spitler and David McHenry, dust
was kept to a minimum.
Chris Bollnt Jr. surprised everybody,
including himself, by beating KTM-mounted
Aaron White in the 125cc B class. In moto
one, White took command before the second
tum and then had to fend off Yamaha-mounted Bolint for three-fourths of the race before
Bolint dropped back to save energy. White
won, with Bolint, who admitted to being tired
after having spent Saturday night playing in a
band, finishing second.
The next time out, however, Bolint gated
perfectly and opened a small lead over the
rest of the pack. White gated around fourth
and had to work hard to close the gap. By the
time Bolint crossed the finish line, White had
closed to within a bikelength, and the duo
provided some of the best racing of the day.
On the third lap, White's front wheel washed
out over a deep berm and he crashed. While
it didn't take him long to recover, that was
all the time Bolint needed to open a sizable
lead to claim the win and the overall in the
125cc B class.
Larry Witmer, recently crowned Amateur
National number one in the Over 45 class,
pajd a rare visit to Leisure Time, along with
Honda of Michigan Cityrrech Care Suspension's Rick Walsworth, a longtime foe. Both
riders rode the Over 40 class, which took to
the line along with the Over 25 A and B riders.
When the gate dropped, Witmer powered
his North End Cycle Honda of Elkhart into the
lead, with Walsworth following. The two quickly separated themselves from the pack by running consistent one-minute, 42-second lap
times - four seconds faster than the previous
quick time estabHshed on the new track configuration. Witmer's CR250R opened a slight
lead over Walsworth's Honda thumper and he
held it to the finish.
In moto two, Witmer age in powered his
Honda into the lead, while Walsworth had to
work through some traffic. When the dust had
settled, Witmer had claimed the overall.
"I really enjoyed the new track layout,"
said Witmer. "It made for some great line
selections. Hauling in some dirt for the jumps,
not sand, was a great addition."
"Yeah, I agree," Walsworth chimed in. "The
track conditions were pretty good. The layout
made for rough conditions. The pace was
fast!"
Their record times were noteworthy, especially considering the brutality of the track.
Every tum had deep braking and acceleration
holes, whkh caused numerous soil samples
by the other riders.
This was the last race of the FMF Sandmaster Series, lind several classes saw lead
changes for the series. Leisure Time thanked
all the riders, FMF, Max Pitts Yamaha Suzuki
Honda, Honda of Michigan City, Auto Masters
and Wheels-4-Tots for their help in putting on
the fifth successful Sandmaster Series.

OGDEN, UT, SEPT. 8
The weather was the biggest story of the
weekend at Hot Springs Raceway. Saturday
started out great, but the clouds emptied
buckets of rain after the completion of the first
motos. Officials had to cancel the second
matos, as small lakes started to form on the
track. Officials hoped the weather would
improve, but Sunday looked really grim, with
dark clouds above. Track workers performed
a near-miracle, draining off the water and
grading the track. Since rain still threatened,
the officials gave the riders a unique choice:
ride one moto, with moto times being about
50-percent longer; or ride two normal motos.
In a close vote, the riders chose to the twomoto format. Fortunately, the weather cooperated and the riders were surprised to find good
track conditions in the morning and fantastic
conditions as the day wore on. Score it racers,
three motes; weather, one.
In the 250cc Pro/Intermediate contest,
Bnmdon Barnes dominated both motos and
took the overall in the Pro portion. The battle
for second between Brad Scott and David
Panzer provided some entertainment, as the
two ran close all day, even making a little
contact. Panzer got in front of Scott in mota
one, but Scott repassed Panzer on lap two.
Panzer retaliated, but Scott prevailed to take
two seconds for the day.
Bryan Getchell was the dominant force in
the 250cc Intermediate class, winning both
motos. Gavin Black (2-2) took second overall.
Justin Smith and Jesse Black were battling
back and forth all day; on the final corner,
Smith passed Jesse to take third for the moto
and for third overall on a 4-3 score. Black
(3-4) finished fourth overall.
In the Women's class, Kim Robinson made
a successful return from injury by winning
both motos. Ashlee Greenhalgh stayed close
and pressured Robinson but never was able to
overtake her and finished a strong second.
Jenica Jenson kept the leaders in sight in both
motos and finished third overall.
In the 65cc (9-11) class, Kyle Price, Alex
Mecham and Dacoda Sorochuk all traded
positions. Sorochuk won moto one with a
good lead, and Price made a last-lap pass on
Mecham to take second, with Mecham third.
Mecham absconded with the second-moto
holeshot, with Price second and Sorochuk
mired midpack. Price passed Mecham, after
Mecham put up a good fight. Sorochuk
worked his way to third but couldn't catch the
leaders. Price took the overall, with Mecham
second and Sorochuk third.
Colton Greenhalgh rode smart and captured the 85cc (12-15) class with two moto
wins. Braden Butterfield got the first-moto
holeshot and held the lead for two laps. However, Greenhalgh managed to get around Butterfield, and Butterfield had to be content taking second for the first moto. Greenhalgh
quickly grabbed the lead in the second moto
and never looked back. Butterfield secured a
solid second. Camron Olsen had to work
around a couple of riders to end up third in
both motos and third overall.
