Longtime Tri-Cities race supporter Oscar
Sheets, backed by Shumate Motorsports, surprised local riders by showing up on a
CRF450R. After years of touting the virtues of
Suzuki two-strokes, Sheets rode a red fourstroke for the first time. When told that it just
didn't seem quite right, Sheets replied, "It
seems odd to me, too.·
Sheets didn't take long to adjust to the
roll-'n'-go power of the big thumper, getting
off to a holes hot in moto one in the OldTimers Beginners class. Sheets, Dave Ivey
and Richland chiropractor Greg "Iron DoeSullivan battled for first in moto one. Outpowered by the thumpers, Doc had to settle for
third, behind Sheets and Ivey. Joe Corder had
trouble staying on the track and did not finish
moto one.
With Sheets not running in moto two,
Corder got to the first corner in first place.
Corder looked fast, but Sullivan's conditioning
paid off. As Corder started to fade, Sullivan
got past and held on for first. Sullivan took
first overall. followed by Ivey, Ross Roberts,
Sheets and Corder.
Drew Ivey, a 125cc Junior rider who is also
recovering from dual tib-fib breaks, had to
move into the 250cc Junior class due to
mechanical problems with his 125. Uncle
Dave Ivey loaned Drew the big YZ426F for a
spin around the sand. Ivey looked sharp on
the big bike, but a stall in moto one put him at
the back of the track. Drew didn't have the
four-stroke starting drill down yet Drew managed to keep the bike running in moto two
and finished 16th overall.

Koppellah Speedway: Troy Solnitsky was the 250cc A winner at the St. Croix Falls,
Wisconsin, short-track event.
The Open Pro class featured a classic
battle between Willie Broten and Kurt BouhIke, as the dicing duo swapped the lead in the
early going, Broten then looked poised for
victory until Bouhlke answered back with a
late-race pass to record the victory.
The Mini Chain class featured another
good race between class luminary Dustin Paul
and newcomer Brandon Moyer. Much to the
delight of the crowd, the duo traded the lead
on every lap, Throughout the race, Paul would
assume: the lead in the comers, but Moyer
would power by on the straights. In the end, it
was Moyer scoring the upset. Paul would
return later to score an easy win in the Mini
Shaft class.

Morais in the Money
at Carnegie
form of his new Motoworld Suzukis. Morais
looked smooth on the new bikes, taking all
four mota wins.
In the 125cc Pro class, Morais battled his
homeboy Robert Harold, who was also fast
but wasn't quite able to match Morais' speed.
The Yamaha pilot had to settle for second on
the day.
In the 250cc Pro class, Morais had some
more competition, in the form of Suzuki rider
Billy Jurevich. Harold and Jurevich chased
Morais in both motos, but their race ended up
being for second. With Morais taking the wins,
Jurevich netted second aboard his AIIAmerican-sponsored Suzuki, while Harold
took third.
In the 125cc Intermediate class, Nick
Davis shined on this day. Davis won both
motos, thereby ensuring his first-place spot on
the podium. Davis was followed by fellow
Suzuki rider Brett Markarian, who went 2-2
for second overall. Third went to Yamahamounted Anthony Maniglia, who went 3-3 for
the day.
The 50cc Open class was exciting to
watch, with the little guys banging bars to
decide the winner. In moto one, KTM rider R.J.
Mendez from Salinas was doing the deed,
snagging the first-moto win. Mendez was foilowed across the line by Polini rider Anthony
Parks. Third was Mark Braden, who was also
riding a Polini.
In moto two, Braden switched on the
afterburners and checked out, winning the
moto. Mendez rode strong and finished
second, while Parks finished a solid third.
Mendez took the overall on the day with his
1-2 finishes. Mark Braden finished second
overall via his 3-1 scores, and Parks finished
third with 2-3 scores.
This event's Dash For Cash races were
once again exciting to watch. This week also
marked the addition of a 60cc Dash For Cash.
Kawasaki jockey Tyler Bereman can now lay
claim to winning the first-ever 60cc DFCI
Meanwhile, the 80cc DFC honors went to
Beau Weigand (how many times does that
make now, Beau?) and, as stated earlier,
Morais did the butt-kicking in the big-bike
Dash (and the taking home of the money).

RICHLAND, WA, SEPT. 8
Local rider Keith Batterman put on quite a
show on his custom copper·metalflake-painted KX85 at the Squisher Motocross Series
event on Sunday. Battennan went 1-1 in both
the Supennini class and the 80cc (12-13)
class. Batterman also ran the KX85 in the
125cc Junior class and showed he could ride
with the bigger boys, going fifth and third for
fourth overall.
Kimberlee Niles kept the boys honest in
the 80cc (12-13) and Supenninl classes. Niles
(the only female rider at the event) went 3-3
in the 80cc (12·13) class, behind Battennan
and Weston Potter, and then posted fourth
overall in the Supennini contest, behind Batterson, Michael Schmeck and Potter.
Cole Scott led both motos in the Super
60cc class but couidn't stay ahead of Lewiston, Idaho, rider Houston Keane, who beat out
Scott and Hunter Evanson for the top of the
podium. The riders went one-twa-three in
both motos.
Huge pile-ups piagued the start of the
125cc grip-and-rip Beginner class. The
25-rider full gate saw riders backed up like an
L.A, freeway in the first comer in both motos.
This contest marked the retum of rider Bryce
Uvesey, coming off tib-fib breaks of left and
right legs. Uvesey was running fifth and moving up in moto one when he overshot a jump
and slid through the sticker bushes into the
fence. Derek Scott is also recovering from
