Little Okle Raceway: At the seventh round of the CMA Little Okie Summer MX Series in Madera, California, the only man to break away clean in both 250cc Beginner motos was Jay leDuc. Little Okie Raceway Rodriguez Roars to Little Okie Win By EDDIE GRAVEUNE MADERA,CA,AUG,23 As the late days of summer continued to scorch California's San Joaquin Valley, the motocross crowd wasn't about to let their enthusiasm run cold. On August 23, riders and their entourages filed into the pits of Madera's Uttle Okie Raceway for round seven of the CMA Uttle Okie Summer MX Series and waited for darkness to bring some cooler tem~ peratures. When the lights went on, the track saw action as hot as the afternoon that 2-3 scores put him in second, behind his brother. Lindberg finished third overall with 4-2 finishes. Several other classes featured action· packed racing as well. The series has been gaining momentum all summer long. With the quality of racing seen at round seven, the upcoming eighth and final round has all the makings of a classic. NOV: I. Scott E. Walker (Yam); 2. Scott Walker Sf. (Hon): 3. (Hon). NOV 40.: I. One of his normal rivals, James Culbertson, had trouble and finished a distant fifth in the opening moto, while Chris Arroyo rode well and quietly finished second. The final race threw a little bit of a curve at the spectators. Bereman suffered major setbacks and fell out of contention. In his absence, Arroyo and Culbertson broke away from the pack and fought over the lead. Arroyo, on his KTM, was barely able to hold off the brand-new Suzuki RM65 of Culbertson. The 2·1 finishes gave Arroyo a well-deserved class victory. Jerry Cox Jr. finished second overall with 3-3 scores. Culbertson's 5-2 finishes were good enough to earn him the final podium spot. Arroyo put the icing on his cake by winning the X class during intermission. The 250cc Beginner class boasted a larger turnout than normal. The extra riders made things on the track interesting. Jay LeDuc got out of the gate cleanly in both motos and streaked to the overall victory. Behind him, though. things weren't so simple. His brother Luke LeDuc had battles with Nick Fisher and Eric Lindberg during the races. He squeaked out a second-place ride in the first mota, but fell behind Lindberg in the second. The 9- to II-year-old Beginners got things going by riding two motos of back-and-forth action. Kawasaki riders Damon Iwanaga and Anthony Rodriguez battied throughout both races. Iwanaga got a good start in the first moto and set the early pace. Rodriguez came from behind to challenge but ran out of laps before he could make a serious bid for the win. In the second moto, though, Rodriguez tumed the tables by jumping out front early. He and Iwanaga played a great game of catand-mouse for the rest of the race, but Rodriguez was able to hold on. He was awarded the overall victory because of his final~race win. The 65cc Novice division was also a 70 second, followed by the always fast-moving John Timmermans. Cruz djdn't fare as well in moto two; after one lap, he was out of the action and couldn't finish. Tim Williams crossed over in time to secure second, and Timmermans was good for another third. Over 50 Expert rider Jack Garland found Starwest to be the right place and the nighttime the right time for winning. Blitzing around the track at high speed, he quickly beat them all to the finish in both motos. Ray Simmons put out lots of energy and power and was rewarded with second place in mota one, and Terry Messer earned it in the second go. Master A racer Scotty Walker is just spec· tacular. Once again he leaped and flew over all the double and triple jumps with such speed, ease and height, seemingly unre· stricted by any limitation at all. It's always awesome to watch him, and needless to say he won both motos. Kurt Sofka Jr. was the best of the amazingly fast Master B racers in mota one, and then he repeated this stellar act again in mota two. Dave Eropkin really whaled out there and followed Sofka both motos but just couldn't step up the speed enough to pass him. However, he definitely came in with an impressive second both times. >SO INT, I. Robby " ' - (Han). orr NOV: 1. Mark MansfIfl6d (Hon): 2. Mark Hawkins (Yam): 3. Mint Wilton (Yam); 4. By BOB AlLOY MORENO VALLEY, CA, AUG. 24 This night's race at Starwest Motocross Park was the climax of a five· race series, and quite a few ROTMXers were out in force to chalk up some additional points and challenge their minds, bodies and machines once again, Carl Foley was as brilliant as the brightest star, as he polished off two holeshot starts and led every Expert in the Over 40 class lap after lap. Never slowing. he blazed across the finish line with two outstanding first-place takes. Phil Cruz cranked out plenty of power and finished cue I e ne...,.,s PERRIS, CA, AUG. 24 As the series nears its end, Dave Holland has become well aware of Yamaha rider Jack Phinn. In round one, Holland took third overall while Phinn finished fifth. As the series went on, Phinn picked up a few more practice days and three first-place wins, with Holland a close second, before Holland picked up Z1nother win in round five. Phinn claimed round six with Holland on his coattails, but at this round, Hoiland was able to pull out a pair of moto wins to gain points on the series leader, and place added pressure on Phinn. Randy Green and Richard Kearney finished third and fourth, respectively. while doing battle in the Over 40 Novice class. Despite taking a break from round five for a trip to Europe, Over 25 Novice series points leader Israel "On The Gas" Ochoa has won all four motos in the last two events. Jimmy Gibbs stepped it up this round with a pair of deuces while trying to run down Ochoa. Matt Cleveland went 3-3 for third overall, keeping himself in the hunt for the championship. Johnny Leach continues to dominate the Over 30 Novice class, as he picked up his seventh win in a row with his two-moto sweep. Leach has 13 mota wins and one second· place finish keeping him on top of the points lead. Jeff Harrison chased Leach in moto one and placed fourth in moto two for second overall. Jeff Nordstrom must have found motivation between matos, as he went 6-2 to pick up third overall, ahead of Phinn (3-5) and Art Temple (4-6), who rounded out the top five. George Harris and Jim Rotlisberger collected duplicate molo finishes in the Over 30 Beginner class to take the top two overalls. Rotlisberger has yet to pick up an overall win, and although he has been close. that only counts in horseshoes (and hand grenades). Mike Frank improved his efforts in mota two with a third, after placing seventh in moto one, for third overall. David Briones went 5-5 for fourth overall, and Bruce Staufer picked up a sixth in mota two for fifth overall with his 4-6 score. Hunter Eitel stepped up his game to take second in moto two, after a win in mota one, to claim the overall in the 250cc Beginner class. Thomas Hilbrands fell outside the top five for the second time in a row after collecting four top-five finishes. Hilbrands went 2-10 for sixth overall, behind Tim Thaxton, who went 9-3 for fourth overall while picking up his Perris Raceway: Kelly Tedder maneuvers through the "crazy 8" moguls In the 125cc Intermediate class at round seven of Pechanga Entertainment & Temecula Motorsports' Hot Summer Nights Series in Perris, California. fifth top-five finish, which includes his win in the last round. Michael Garland swept the 50cc (4-6) Stock class, with the blue Polini of Brian Taylor on his rear fender in both motos.
