By Roa PETRAS
RAVENNA, OH, AUG. 18
Journeyman motocrosser John Shay still has
plenty of skills to master a motocross course.
He looked very impressive aboard his Yamaha
as he took not only the Senior One (Over 30)
division victory but also the Heavyweight
Pro-class win!
Shay. a former Pro-level racer, won four
motes lind kept Honda riders Greg Hudak and
Mike Howell at bay as he pulled both
holeshots in the Pro class. Hudak. on an
Andre:ws Honda/Davidson Construction!
MSR/Renthal/SCS Racing Decals CR250,
stayed within striking distance but couldn't
close the two- to four-second gap betwee:n
them. He went 2-2 for second overall. Howell
had bad starts in both motos but put in two
inspiring rides through the pack to finish 3-3.
Finishing runner-up in Senior One was KTMmounted Jeff Johnson (2-3). Third overall
went to Honda rider Ray Vagarasoto, who
posted 3-4 results. With more than 30 riders in
the: class, the racing was close and provided
some of the best action of the day.
Jimmy Berg topped the 125cc B class,
going 1-1 on his Yamaha. Keeping him honest
in both motos was Honda-mounted Josh
Kompa, with 2-2 finishes. Third overall w.s
KawlIsaki jockey Scoll Gamek.
As the 29 riders left the gate for the first
125cc C moto, Pennsylvania rider Chris
Zedreck, on an RM 125, absconded with the
holeshot. He would only hold the point for half
a IlIp, 115 young Billy Shay, John's son, took
the lead over the large tabletop jump on his
Yamllha. Moving up fast were Jason Hutton
and Kris Kaletz, both on Yamahas. Billy held.
f.st p.ce .nd WIIS never headed. Finishing
• behind him were Hullon, Kaletz lind Suzuki
jockey Seth Harmon. Zedreck faded b.ck
to sixth.
Hullon hammered the start of moto two to
nail down the holeshot, but it WIIS short-lived,
as Kllietz took over the lead before the end of
the first lap. Going down in a pile-up in tum
two WIIS first-moto winner Shlly. He picked
himself up in dead Illst lind b.ttled bllck to
10th. Out front, it WIIS Kllietz taking the win
lind the overall with a 3-1 tally. Second overall
WIIS Hullon, with a 2-2 effort. Third overllll
was Suzuki-mounted Scoll Schindler, who
went 5-3. Harmon (4-4) was fourth overall.
Suzuki pilot Ryan Boyer continues to
improve. He took two overall victories, domjnating the Supermini class with a solid 1-1
performance. OIR regular Chris Carr, on a
Kawasaki, was runner-up with consistent 2-3
finishes. Boyer got the holeshot in the first
Senior Mini moto but fell bllck to fifth 115 the
first lap ended. Yamaha-mounted Evan Gutshall took over the lead but then threw it away
as he slid out on the front downhill. Yamaha
rider David Eme inherited the lead lind kept it
to the finish. Boyer secured the overall with •
second-moto win and a 3-1 tally. Eme (1-3)
was second overall, followed by Gutshall (4-2)
