Highlands Motocross Park Kiesel King of Highlands Bv BRIAN COMEAU HIGHLANDS, TX, AUG. 24 The summer nights of August mean night racing in Houston, and more Saturday Night Races by STC. On this particular evening, the venue was Highlands Motocross Park, and action in the 80ce Beginner class led the way. Michael Kiesel picked up an impressive win to go with his fifth overall in the Supennini class. Craig Swafford grabbed the holeshot, in front of Christopher Carl, in the first mota of the 80cc Beginner class, Behind them, Kiesel jumped past Chris Mahaffey to take over third. Swafford continued his early lead through the first two laps before a mishap on the third lap left him just inside the top five. This handed the lead to Carl, with Kiesel in second. When the white flag came out, the battle for the lead was in full swing, with Carl barely holding off Kiesel. Carl maintained control and held on to take the first-mota win. ahead of Kiesel and Brandon Howard. Swafford, who led early, recovered from his crash to take fourth place. ahead of Heath Trahan. It became obvious that the overall was going to be up for grabs as the gate dropped without first-moto winner Corl. Howard picked up the holes hot in the second moto, with Mahaffey a close second before Kiesel took over the runner-up position. behind the Honda of Howard. Swafford moved into second. and it looked like any of the top three riders could come away with the moto win and possibly even the overall. The lead three qUickly distanced themselves from fourth-placed Trahan and Mahaffey in fifth. It looked like Howard would come away with the moto win, but a mistake on the last lap passed the lead off to Kiesel with only a few turns to go. Kiesel crossed the line to take the mota win, ahead of Swafford, to take the win and the overall. SWllfford's 4-2 tally earned him second overall, ahead while Trahan finished the moto in third. Howard still finished fourth in the mota, which was good enough for third overall, ahead of Trahan, while Mahaffey rounded out the top five overall with a 6-5 showing. In the 125cc Intermediate class, newcomer Jose Fernandez picked up the class win with a pair of first-place finishes. The battle for the top spot was close, with Travis Daffern and Eric Wisnoski trading places in each moto, behind Fernandez. All three riders were in contention in each moto, but it was Fernandez who came away with the win in the first moto, ahead of Daffern, with Wisnoski in fourth. The second moto was much like the first, in that anyone might have come away with the win. but Fernandez stole the show once more, with Wisnoski taking second, ahead of Daffern, who would still pick up second overall. Isanti County Fairgrounds Duke of Dirt Wins Cambridge ST Bv TIM McBRIDE CAMBRIDGE, MN, AUG. 24-25 Don Boehlke proved that not only can he groom a racetrack, the 61-year-old enthusiast can race on them as well. Boehlke, who is better known as the "Duke of Dirt" for his years of preparing motocross, dirt-track and enduro racetracks, won the Vintage Singles event and scored two second-place finishes during Sunday's portion of the On Track Promotions Saturday and Sunday dirt-track doubleheader. The two-day event was held at the Isanti County fairgrounds' quarter· mile oval. Boehlke took the lead right from the start of the Vintage Singles main event, followed by Ed Hampe, Jon Markuson, Chad Kulzer and Troy Loftis. From then on, Boehlke switched into cruise control and never looked back all the way to the checkers. The only change in the running order came early in the race, when Kulzer slid past Markuson to finish in third place. Boehlke wasn't finished yet; he aiso turned in a good finish in the Over 40 class, where he pulled the holeshot. Eric Brouhard slid by Boehlke on lap two, however, and pulled away for the win. Boehlke finished second, just ahead of Over 30 winner Richard Waschek, who worked his way around Joe Bentfield to finish third. Up next for Boehlke was the Stock Frame class. The previous event winner, Cory Solnit· sky, grabbed the lead just after the start, only to be passed by Steve Bystrom. Solnitsky kept Bystrom in check throughout until the last lap, when he fell in tum three. Solnitsky's misfortune allowed Boehlke to inherit second, and he held off a close race for position between Kulzer and Doug "Igloo" Deering; Deering made a last-lap pass on Kulzer to nab third. Previous event winners Loftis and Lissa Golden finished fifth and sixth, respectively. In Saturday's race, Kevin Anderson pulled a triple play by winning the 125cc, the Beginner B and the 250cc classes. Anderson's performance on Saturday raised an eyebrow in the Broten family's pit area: On Sunday, Anderson was offered a ride on Saturday's Open Pro event winner Willie Broten's Rotax. Anderson tumed in a good performance. placing fifth in the Open A class on Sunday. Results Saturday !'\IN! SHAfT' 1 Dustin Paul (Yam); 2. Cole AndeBOn (Yam): 3. While several riders came close to winning two classes. oniy MSRIMichael's Hondabacked Jason Bushman recorded double wins. In the Over 25 A and Heavyweight A classes. Bushman had to repel Honda riders Jason Begeske and Chris Cicmockl to claim the top spot in the combined Over 25 AlB contest. In the Heavyweight AlB combined class, Bushman had to fight off Kenny Honn, who rode his Honda thumper to second over· all. Heavyweight B rider Cicmocki followed in third and first in the Heavyweight B class. In the combined Over 30 AlB contest. Darren Pscion got the holeshot ahead of II other riders and clicked off consistent lap times to distance himself from the pack. At the checkers, Pscion took the win in the Over 30 A class, while fellow KTM rider Cary Sporinsky topped B portion. The second moto was deja vu, as Pscion recorded his second holeshot and rode uncontested to the overall Over 30 A victory. Meanwhile, Sporinsky tangled in the first turn and passed the scoring area in seventh after the first lap. Jerry Konopasek, who finished second in the first Over 30 B moto, was fending off Jeff Martin and his Wheels-4-Tots-sponsored Honda to decide who would take the overall in the Over 30 B class.
