AMAlWML National Championship Series

or more times. Whitmore proved to be very
adept at mud-riding and dominated the field,
leading the entire mota even after crashing
three times on one lap. She won the mota by
more than 20 seconds. Raemisch held on for
second. Jessica Patterson finished third.
Due to the weather, the AMA decided to
cancel the second moto, and the first mota
was scored as double points. Now the points
race is really close. A little explanation is in
order: The AMA{WML Series is a seven-round
series, but with a "throw-away" round - riders
can throw out their worst race finish. The
series overall will be scored on six rounds. T~e
points chase is very close going into the final
round. Dropping the riders' worst scores at
this time, Bau would still be in the lead by 11
points. Third through fihh is only separated by
10 points.
In the Amateur National Series, the first
mota was held on a beautiful Friday and the
second on Saturday. In moto one, Suzuki
jockey Philo Petricig got the early jump on the
field. with Jessye Davis, Cheryl McCullough
and Amber Farley close behind. Petricig ied
the first lap but Davis made the pass on lap
two and started to pull away. Farley passed
McCullough for third. Farley gained ground,

Going into round six of the AMA/WML National Championship Series, the title chase had
gotten interesting. Jessica Patterson had
steadily closed the gap on Stefy Bau for the
series championship. Jacki Hudson, Tania
Satchwell, Sarah Whitmore and Sheena Patterson had a total of 22 points separating
them in the points race for third overall.
In years past, Broome-Tioga's weather has
been rather kind to the WML Series, compared
to some of the other venues, but not this year.
As Friday's Amateur program closed for the
evening, the skies opened up and it rained all
night, and by daybreak the track was a mess and the rain was not going anywhere soon.
Now the question was, Who was the best mud
rider in the field? It was soon clear that there
was no clear-cut standout; in fact, not only did
the top six all have a legitimate shot, but so
did Nova Scotia's Heidi Cooke and Wisconsin's Kirsten Raemisch. Now, this really could
get interesting: eight possible contenders
fighting for three podium spots.
In the first Pro mota, Sarah Whitmore was
first out of the gate and around the first tum,
just missing the two pileups that leh Bau,
Sheena and Jessica, Satchwell, and Cooke
struggling to raise their bikes from the slop.
By the time they all got up and going, Whitmore was already opening up a lead on
Tiffany Reed.
On lap two, Raemisch was dosing in when
Reed went down and Raemisch took second,
but Jessica was reeling her in. Meanwhile,
Whitmore steadily pulled away. Jessica and
Raemisch went at it for a few laps, and as
soon as Jessica had taken the spot, she fell
down, ietting Raemisch back around. By this
time, Whitmore had almost a mjnute lead, and
there was little chance of anyone catching her.
This was now a mota of survival; just staying upright was a battle in itself. Bau moved
up to challenge Jessica but she, too, fell and
lost her spot. She got up and was now battling
with Sheena for fourth. Every rider hit the
ground at least once in this moto, and very
few made it around without sampling dirt two

LOS BANOS, CA, AUG. 24
Clawson Motorsports/Shift/Pro Circuit/IRSbacked Jeff Pestana entered the final round of
the AMP Top Gun Summer-X Series (presented by Alpinestars, Swift Auto World and
Merced PowerspoTts) with a fairly healthy lead
in the Top Gun Shootout points standings. Up
for grabs was a $ 1000 bonus, and all the wily
veteran had to do was place somewhere within the top five or six. But when Pestana enters
a race, all he has in mind is nothing less than
a win, and that's exactly what he wound up
with as he turned a last spot on the single-row
line-up into a hard-fought victory in the
evening's main event.
The usual players were all lined up in front
of him, including Daniel Blair, Billy Jurevich,
Kenny Heess and superfast Intermediate
Corey McDaniel. As the race got under way,
McDaniel set the pace eariy on, with Oakley
Sport Suzuki rider Matt McCrummen in tow.
However, McDaniel, aboard a Powerhouse
Vamaha/Pro Circuit/Posey Racing/O'Neal
Vamaha, had a sizable lead by about the
halfway point of the I5-lap event. Back in the
pack, Pestana and Blair were charging, and it
only took one tum to change things in a hurry.
Heess and Jurevich got tangled aher going
bar to bar in a tight leh-hander, and with nearly the entire tum blocked, Pestana and Blair
scrambled for a place to go. Pestana made the
wisest decision, sneaking through on an inside
line, while Blair went wide and off the track.
"I was charging, and then all of a sudden I
see these bikes on the ground in that turn,"
the MXH/Powerhouse/Dr. Cohen/Big Gunbacked Blair said. "I went a little too wide and
tried to keep my momentum because I knew
Jeff was right behind me, but I lost a lot of
time going off the track in the slick stuff."
Pestana then turned on the afterburners
and eventually zapped both McCrummen
and McDaniel to take the win_ Blair never
gave up and followed up behind Pestana.
with McDaniel, McCrummen and Jeremy
Chaussee, who came all the way up from lancaster, rounding the top five.

Novice classes with consistent finishes
throughout the series.
Double-class winners included Beau
Weigand and Derrick Anderson. Weigand took
home a pair of big, silver series championship
cups in the 80cc Intermediate and Supermini
classes, while Anderson did likewise in the
Schoolboy and 250cc Novice classes.
With the series averaging more than 375
riders per event, it was evident that the AMP
crew had laid out a competitive yet safe track
that saw riders treated to an overall top-quality series all the way around.
