AUG. 24-25 After nearly a two-month break in action to let the heat in Texas have a chance to subside, the racers of TCCRA were back together in Bryson, Texas, for round 10 of the 14-round season. Well, it is Texas, and although it's late August, it's still unbearably hot. With little wind and temperatures over 100 degrees, track officials were forced to cut down the number of laps, for the safety of the group as a whole. The Pros ran five laps for a total of 42 miles - a lap short of normal - first thing Sunday moming. "You had to grab the holeshot on this one," said series leader and 10-time state champion Clay Hoenshell. "You had to be out in front of all the dust. I went out early in a field behind the camping area and practiced my starts for over a half-hour· just to make sure!" Not only did Hoenshell grab the start, he had a nearly three-bikelength lead just past the first turn. "By the second lap, I started running into traffic and dust," said the Granbury Kawasaki/Team Green/Moose/IMS/Renthal-backed 40-year old, "but by that time I had about a minute-and-a-half iead on the pack behind me. The holeshot was key on this one." Hoenshell kept his lead to finish first, with Haydn Franklin and Sam Wash finishing second and third. respectively. With a more-than· 300-point advantage and only four races to go, Hoenshell leads the series for the 11 th straight year. In the Semi-Pro class, Two Wheel World Arlington/Straight Line/Durant Cycle Salessponsored Sean Reddish ran away with the win. "The holeshot was close." Reddish said. "but I was first to the woods. I only had about a half-mile before I started catching the Pros. ."nd with [themJ. the dust." Reddish was the first in his class to the checkered flag and flnished third among the Pros. Now 31. Reddish has been racing TCCRA for 19 years. When asked why he made the decision not to tum Pro this season, he said: "I just didn't feei like I was ready this season. Racing for money is an entirely differ· ent ballgame. I plan to join them next year. This year, my goal is to finish first and win the Rossman Award." The Len Rossman Award is given to the rider with the highest number of points in an Expert or Pro class each year. To distinguish the winner, he or she is assigned the number "1" for the following year. Currently, number "I" is held by Hoenshell, who has earned the honor five times· more than anyone in the award's 28-year history. If Hoenshell were to earn it again this season, he would further distinguish himself as the rider with the most consecutive wins . four. Reddish leads Hoenshell by 36 points as they close in on the end of the season. At the Pee Wee races on Saturday, the kids were excited to be back from their summer break and out on the track. There were a few new faces on the 50cc Novice line; Alex Spurgeon and Nicholas Page were among them. The girl and boy were side by side, and neither had raced before in their lives. They each had quite a pit crew, made up of nervous parents and friends with telephoto lenses to capture the moment. When asked if they were ready, they both qUietly replied, "Yep," and then smiled and laughed with each other. Marguerita Neubauer, second vice presi· dent and Pee Wee program coordinator, handed out the first Pee Wee Sportsman Award of the year to Jordan Gregory, who races in the 65cc Amateur class. "Jordan saw his fellow rider down, with the bike on top of his leg," Neubauer said. "He stopped in the middle of his race to get the bike off of the downed rider, made sure he was okay before he left, and said he would let someone know. For a chjld that young to not be so caught up in the race and genuinely concerned about another, I felt more than earned this recognition. I would give out as many as I had to for this type or any other type of sportsmanship, and I applaud the parents who obviously have taught him about all the aspects of racing."
