STC Stars Over Texas Night Series Round 3: Highlands Motocross Parle HIGHLANDS, TX, AUG. 17 The third round of STC Stars Over Texas Night Series was full of surprises, as the series made its first of two stops at Highlands Motocross Park. The first surprise was the weather, which threatened to cancel the event early but held off and made for perfect track conditions. The next on the list of surprises was the turnout, as the racers came out 395 strong for racing under the lights. The third surprise came about four motos into the second half, when half the lights went out, darkening the first half of the track. The officials scrambled to reroute the track as the racing continued briefly on a shortened track before officials quickly set up a temporary light so that racing could resume on the full track once more. The last surprise came from Cody Briggs, who picked up a set of two class wins, in the 65cc (7-9) and 65cc Open classes. Briggs jumped out to the early lead in the first 65cc (7-9) moto, ahead of Bryson Powers, Cameron Snedeker, Dustin Fowler and Carson Wieland. Powers was quick to put his Sport Cycles of Houston/Smith/EBR-backed KTM out front, flying over Briggs to take the lead. Powers appeared to be the only one doing a lot of the bigger jumps on the course, and he quickiy pulled ay/ay from the rest of the field. With Powers leading Briggs and Snedeker, the battle for fourth began to pick up. Krae Weldon was moving up through the field, and he had moved into sixth, behind Wieland. Weldon passed Wieland for fifth and was looking to challenge Fowler as the white flag came out. At the checkers, it was Powers ahead of Briggs by 10 seconds, followed by Snedeker and Fowler, who held off Weldon to hang on to fourth. Briggs got the jump on the field once again in the second mota, with Powers in tow and Weldon using a better start to his advantage. Jonathan Cojocar was in fourth early on the first lap before Fowler moved around to take over the position. Christian Cross Riders-sponsored Briggs was able to maintain his lead in this moto, holding off Powers from start to finish to win the second mota and take the overall. Powers kept him honest but never had a chance to make his move. Third went to Weldon, whose 5-3 score edged out Fowler's 4-4 score. Fifth went to Cocojar, who turned in a 6-5 tally. Heath Teague made his presence felt in the Over 30 class, going 1-2 to put his Wild West Honda in first overall, ahead of Fred Moreno. Teague had little trouble in the first mota, as he picked up the lead on the first lap and never looked back to take a solid first. ahead of Domingue Sand and Gravel-sponsored Brian Domingue of Lafayette, Louisiana, while Moreno picked up third. The second mota was completely different. Teague struggled early on before breaking free and picking up second. This gave Vann Duke a chance to put his Highlands Kawasaki/Duke Medical-sponsored Honda in the winners' circle for the second moto after picking up sixth in the first moto. Moreno stayed consistent and picked up another third to score his second overall. while Duke's 6-1 tally gave him third overall. David Kocich picked up fourth overall with a 5-4 showing, while Charles Dobesh rounded out the top five with a 4-7 score. Joey Aguilar dominated both 125cc Novice motos en route to first overall. Aguilar pulled the holeshot in both motos and never looked back as put his PWR/EVS-sponsored Kawasaki across the finish line first. Behind him, the battle for second was intense, as EBR's Blake Cochran fought all moto long to hang on to the runner-up spot, ahead of Bill Derks. The second moto was closer, as Justin Thomas surprised everyone after coming off an 11 th-place finish in the first mota. Thomas got a much better start the second time out three laps, and then Saylor slid out in a comer and Walker was finally able to relax. By that time, Stancil charged hard through the pack after a bad start and was putting the pressure on Earles for fifth place but ran out of time to make the pass. The second mota was very interesting, as the motos had been cut short (as the event was running out of daylight). Walker pulled the holeshot, with Neese, Crisp, Saylor and Scott Muterspaugh chasing him down. Neese and. Crisp bumped bars in the air and Neese went down, which allowed Saylor to pass Crisp and put him in second place. Before Crisp could recover, Muterspaugh sneaked past for third. On the last lap, Walker slid out and fell to ninth place. Bryant was putting the pressure on Crisp and sneaked under him in the last corner for the pass. The overall order was Sayior, Bryant, Walker, Stancil and Earles. Other race highlights included the 250cc class, in which Casey Shaw pulled the holeshot but had a close battle with Broc Burman. For the entire mota, Burman tried to pass for the lead, but he was no match for Shaw. Tim Myers, in third, had a comfortable distance on Chris Stewart and John Knotts. Trying hard to pass Stewart, Knotts ran off the track and got the banners caught in his back wheel and fell out of the top five. This allowed Eril Crowe to move into the top five very quickly, and he was putting the pressure on Stewart but ran out of time to make the pass. The overall order was Shaw, Myers, Burman, Crowe and Stewart. In the 65cc (10-11) class, Thomas Roberts absconded with the holeshot. Ricky Winters, Tyler Fox, Jeremy Smith and Justin Coley followed. Roberts wasted no time and stretched out a lead from the rest of the pack. Smith put in a late charge and was able to make a pass on Fox. Smjth put the pressure on Winters and made the pass but came up short on the stairstep and allowed Winters to pass him back. The overall order was Roberts Fox, Smith, Winters and Ryan Smith. as Briggs Goes Big at Highlands By BRJAN COMEAU 85 SR (12·13); I. Steven Ball (Kaw); 2. Dustin Doueet (Stu): 3. By MAn-HEW MORETZ DANVILLE, VA, AUG. 18 The Carolina Ultra Series got back under way on August 18 with round six at Birch Creek Motorsports in Danville, Virginia. With the dirt from Loretta's just recently washed off, more than 480 riders battled temperatures in the upper 90s on a long day of racing excitement. The 125cc Pro class started with Kevin Walker out front, followed by Jacob Saylor, Zack Bradshaw, Isha Wood and Jim Neese. On the second lap, Bradshaw went down, which allowed Neese to make the pass on Wood. Saylor had bike troubles and dropped out of contention. Late in the race, Jason Birch Creek Motorsports Danville.
