Starwest Motocross Park Madden, Far from the Crowd BY MlKE MD BARBARA PALUZZI MORENO VALlEY, CA, AUG. 17 Tommy Madden put together two impressive motos to take the overall win in the 85cc Beginner class on Saturday night at Starwest. Robert Franco pulled the first-moto holeshot, followed by R.J. Hoch and Daniel Arredondo. Franco set the pace and started to distance himself from the pack. Meanwhile. Madden was playing catch-up after a bad start, setting his sights on Arredondo and Hoch. By the third lap, Madden was able to make the pass on Arredondo and move into the third-place position. The white flag came out, and Madden made his pass on Hoch down the back straight. Franco cruised in for the win, followed by Madden and Hoch. In the second moto, Madden nailed the holeshot and took advantage of the early lead. Franco and Hach were close behind, but by the third lap Madden was in control and not looking back. Madden took the win and the overall, followed by Franco and Hoch. In the 85cc Open division, the thrills and spills were plenty and the action never stopped. In the first moto, Buddy Greene nailed the holeshot and was able to gain a substantial lead. Brothers Chris and Kevin Micklos were making their way up to take the last two podium positions. Greene took the win, followed by Chris and Kevin. In the second moto, Greene took the blue Yamaha to the front. followed by Kevin Micklos and Nick Paluzzi. Greene took a spill in the back section, allowing Kevin and Paluzzi to get by. Paluzzi made his pass on Kevin to take the lead. Kevin then had more company, as Cody Tithof made his move to take over second. Paluzzi took the win, followed by Tithof and Kevin Micklos. Kevin scored the overall win with his 3·3 finishes, while Greene earned sec· ond with a 1-5 tally and Paluzzi's 6-1 efforts were good enough for the final podium spot. In 250cc Novice action, local favorite J.R. Williams was able to take the overall win despite some tough competition from Bryan Barton, who took the first·moto win. Things Add Up for Koslowski at LACR By GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE, CA, AUG. 17 Suzuki-mounted Anatol Koslowski came out on top of a three· way points tie to emerge with the 125cc Beginner class overall honors at Los Angeles County Raceway, during The Racers Edge-sponsored round of California Racing Club's Saturday night motocross. Opening-mota action saw Wes Pierce with the early lead, ahead of Mike McCarron, Koslowski and Cody Maness. Pierce's reign out front lasted a little over a lap before McCarron took over the top spot, with Koslowski dropping Pierce back a'nother position a short time later. Things changed on the penultimate lap, when McCarron bobbled his way back to third place at about the same time that Pierce Tepassed Koslowski for the lead. Pierce held on for the win, with McCarron slipping past Koslowski on the final circuit to claim second place. Fourth went to Maness, followed by Russell Hellmann and Jason Sibley. The second·moto holeshot went to Maness, with Hellmann and Koslowski just off his rear fender. Koslowski made quick work of Hellmann and set out after Maness. Koslowski reeled in Maness and hounded him for a couple of circuits until Maness got sideways off a jump and went down. Koslowski inherited a lead that he would easily maintain until the checkers fell. McCarron and Pierce came from out of the pack off the start to eventually finish in second and third place, respectively, but it was Koslowski' 5 3-1 tally that got the better of McCorron's 2-2 score and Pierce's 1-3 finishes for the first-place trophy. Randy Merrill appeared to have the 85cc Beginner first·moto win in the bag until a fall dropped him to an eventual fifth-place showing. Tyler Pierce capitalized on Merrill's mis· fortunes to disappear with the win. Kameron Robinson and Chelsea Candido argued over second place, with Robinson prevailing on the last lap. Davey Fajardo finished a close fourth, followed by Merrill and T ylor Hemme. Robinson absconded with the holeshot in moto two and quickly put five seconds on the field. Pierce overcame a midpack start to reel in Robinson by the midway point, and was once again handed the lead when Robinson bobbled. Pierce took the win with 10 seconds to spare for a perfect 1-1 night. Fajardo followed Pierce up through traffic to go 4·2 for second overall, edging out the 2-4 score of Robinson.
