Neal De Ganno (Yam). n e vv s By BlJ'.S K!SIC ROSAMOND, CA, AUG. 18 Chuck Graves put in another dominating per· formzmce jn the Toyota Cup Unlimited Formula One Grand Prix at Willow Springs International Raceway, despite tire-melting heat and strong winds, at the eighth round of Willow Springs Motorcycle Club race action. Starting from second place, Graves quickly dispatched pole sitter Jeremy Toye in turn two, building an impressive lead on his Varna· ha YZF-RJ. Toye, however. kept clinging to Graves' rear tire; the two began distancing themselves from the rest of the pack. At the end of the first of 12 laps, third-placed Jason Perez trailed behind the two leaders. Vincent Haskovec was fourth. Determined to catch Graves, Toye pushed too hard on the hot asphalt, sliding off the track in turn eight at the end of lap two. He walked away with no injuries, Perez inherited second place from the unfortunate Toye. If predicting the winner looked like a safe bet, the battle to fill the rest of the podium kept everybody on the edges of their seats. The fight for third place heated up, with Jack Pfeifer passing Haskovec on the third lap. Pfeifer caught up to Perez, and it looked like he had found some extra speed; he got past him in turn two, on the fourth lap, but when Haskovec passed Perez in the next curve, it was clear that Perez had a mechanical problem. He retired at the end of the lap. Pfeifer led Haskovec on three fast laps, locked in a tight battle for second place. The fast Czech managed to draft Pfeifer on the back straight, achieving a healthy lead on lap six. Two laps later, Pfeifer fought back, passing Haskovec again. Lonely in first place, Graves kept churning out fast laps, unaware of the commotion behind him. Haskovec passed Pfeifer one more time on lap 11. When leader Graves took the checkered flag, though, it still wasn't certain who would be second: Haskovec exited turn nine, flanked by Pfeifer, who was literally bumping his engine against the rev limiter - but to no avail, as Haskovec took second by less than one yard, in a very exciting finish, In the 600cc Super Stock event, Graves led from the start of the six-lap event, but what lit up this race was the battle behind the leader, between Perez and Toye. Third-placed Toye used the front straight to draft Perez on lap three; although unsuccessful then, he managed to make a pass in turn two. They passed each other twice on the following lap. Graves led the last lap, with Taye in second place, followed by Perez. Surprisingly, though, Perez shot past Toye in turn three. Shortly after, so did the rest of the field. Eventually, Toye limped back to his garage. He later admitted having a problem with the fuel pump from the start. "Not to take away from Jason· he's pretty fast -but we were struggling the whole time," said the unfortunate rider. The final positions were Graves. Perez and Jacob West, in that order. Wheel 2 Wheel Raceway Wood Wheels to Wheel 2 Wheel Win - Again! By JIM GRANT VICTORVILLE, CA, AUG. 23 On a beautiful Saturday evening, races were once again the major attraction in Victorville, California, as Wheel 2 Wheel Raceway hosted some action-packed, bar-banging short-track racing. Eddie Mulder was on hand to help support the program and give advice to anyone who needed it. In heat one-A, Jim Ottele and Bob Cobb grabbed good holeshots, leaving Elliott Iverson running in third after two laps. Ottele was ahead of Cobb with one lap to go, and at the checkers it was Ottele, Cobb, Iverson and Danny Perez. In heat one-B, Joe Steffen had his Mr. Ed's Yamaha TISOO on ralls and hooked up, leading the entire race. Jim Rosa held off red-hot local Jimmy Woods at the stripe. The riders with the lowest score in heats two-A and two-B wo~ld be lining up for the Will Davis Dash For Cash. The line-up for the dash consisted of Wood, Iverson, Rosa, Cobb, Steffen and Ottele. Rosa got a great start and led the pack into turn one, followed by Wood and Steffen. This being only a six-lap, winner-take·all race, the pace was fast and exciting. Passing the stripe and going into turn one, Wood got his DRS03 Suzuki up in the cushion and blasted by the leader, Rosa. Wood checked out for the win and the entire purse. followed by Steffen and Rosa, with the eight fastest going to the A majn and the remaining riders going to the B main. In the B main, Alex Wood and Danny Perez kept each other honest for the first three laps until Perez found another line up higher and made it work. Wood and Dennis Voll were run· ning second and third, John Lundgren was on the move but ran out of laps in his bid to cap· ture third from Voli. James Steet and Ray Hensley followed. As the A main took to the line, it was obvi· ous this was going to be a bam-burner. With Jimmy Wood chose the outside. next to Rosa, Cobb, Iverson and Steffen on the front row, Ottele, Ian Foulds and Dick Fox were on the second row. When the green flag dropped,
