Up front, Flanagan seemed flawless as he took the moto win, ahead of Roose. The battle for third ended with Bacon beating out Johnson to the checkered flag to take the last spot on the podium. Kyle Abney piloted his Yamaha YZ250 to fifth. Ricky Allen took the holeshot in the 250cc Beginner mota, only to be passed by Hondamounted Mark Strong shortly after, with Tim Hanlin running third. Bobby Poiuado, Eric Wachel and Rodney Cellner were locked in a tight battle just outside the top three. Wachei broke free of the pack, and when Hanlin made a mistake on the second lap, Wachel was right there to capitalize on it. By the end of the second lap, Strong and Allen had opened up a small gap on Wachel and Hanlin. Headed into the finish· line jump, Hanlin nearly jumped over Wachel to take back the third spot, only to have Wachel take it back in the very next turn. The two were lOCKed in a dead heat until a mistake left Hanlin in the mud. The mistake would be enough to send him back to the pits and packing. At the finish, it was Strong ahead of Allen, with Wachel back in a secure third. Mike Haverfield nailed down fourth, and Joel Gonzalez rounded out the top five. Rusty Moffitt was top dog in the Schoolboy class, taking the moto win and first overall on his Moffitt Customized Fueling/Troy Lee Designs/Honda of Houston CR 125 to go with his second· place finish in the 125cc Novice class. Steven Ball finished second on his High. lands Kawasaki/Axo/JM Racing KXlOO. Third went to Cody Riggins of Livingston, Texas, ahead of Lee Mooney and Ryan Goodman. Ball also bested the B5cc (12-13) class and finished second in the 85cc Open. Action Park Speedway Winning's the Norm for Robinson By JAMES MCCOLLUM GREENE, NY, JULY 13 The legends were back at Action Park East for the Golden Greats Match Races! Norm Robinson, Rick Stone, Jim Pierce and Rodney Payne were on hand to put on a show for the speedway fans. Robinson, who was once a National champ, seemed to have the upper hand. Stone, Payne and Pierce were top riders in the giory days at Champion and Action Park speedways, and on this night, the legends showed the younger guys how they used to race. Robinson was the quickest of the bunch. He took the holeshot in the main and ran away with it. After getting a footpeg stuck in his chain in the first Division One heat, Tom Sephton rode strong. Sephton won all his heats and got into the Scratch main event, along with Cam Rafferty, Dave Oakden, Jeremy Parsons and Mikey Robinson. With an extremely good gate start on the inside, Sephton got out in the lead, with Rafferty nipping at his heels. Rafferty didn't have enough for Sephton, who held him off to take the checkers. Merle Craven was on a roll in Support A competition. Craven won three out of four heat races. In the main event, Marc Gauthier had the lead going into turn one on the second lap. Gauthier didn't get sideways enough, sending himself wide out of the corner. Craven was right there to capitalize on the mistake: Craven went right underneath him and rode to victory. Action Park Speedway: Cam Rafferty wheelies down the back straight en route to a second-overall finish in the Division One class in Greene, New York. 66 AUGUST 14, 2002' I: U I: e n e _ s Support B racing has been exciting all year, with young guns going up against the older racers. Mike Buman Jr. and Chip Lengle are only 11 years of age, racing on 250cc motors. Casey Donholt is 14 and rides the standard-sized bike, a 500cc. Heber Belles, Carl Van Horn and Henry Hanzo, the latter being 61 years of age, try to stay out in front of these younger guys. Lengle was riding fast all night on the outside. In the main, things went sour for Lengle, as he got wild out of the first corner and took a hard fall. He would not be back for the restart. Buman and Donholt took advantage of Lengle's absence and both moved right up to the front. Buman held off Donholt for the win. The young guns were in front tonight, but never count the other guys out. All the riders are getting better every week. Corne on down and watch the races. Results LEGENDS: 1. Norm Robinson; 2. Pleasure Riders Hillclimb Stewart Fastest at Cayuga Hillclimb By BUD NORTHRUP CAYUGA, IN, JULY 14 Brent Stewart made only his fourth District 17 hillclimbing appearance at the Pleasure Riders climb on July 14 and came away with his third Fast Time award. Riding his two-time Nationai Championship KTM 3BO, Stewart cruised over the top of the 150-foot hill in a good 4.210 seconds to take the first-round lead in the 450cc class, but it wasn't the fastest ride of the day, as Mark Schroeder had already posted a 4. 19B-second time in the 250cc class. "Fast Andy" Fortner nailed an even faster 4.124 seconds in the 600cc class, and it looked as if Fortner might duplicate his feat of being the Fast Guy from the night before. However, Stewart was up to the challenge in the second round, flying his beautiful KTM over in a sizzling 4.054 seconds to set a new fast time, which would hold up for the rest of the day. Mark Schroeder enjoyed a double-win day, as his lovely wife, Sonya, looked on from the judges' booth. Riding his stock-length YZ250, Schroeder posted his 4. 19B-second time to take the lead in the large 250cc class on his first ride. then punctuated it with an even faster 4.135-second round-two effort. His win was convincing, as his closest competitor, Kevin Cappello, checked in with a 4.34B-second time on his YZ250, just one-thousandth of a second quicker than Kevin Ryan. Schroeder's second win on his Yamaha came in the 400cc Stock class, his second in two days, posting a good 4.263-second time on his first ride and an even faster 4.180 sec· onds on his second-round attempt. Chris Brown was the next·best rider, with a 4.272· second time. Butch "Fearless" Fetters also enjoyed a double·win day, taking wins in the Open Stock and 600cc Four·Stroke classes on his KTM 520. His 4.299-second first-round time was a winner in the Open Stock class, with Tom Brown and Jammie Brown claiming sec· and and third on their CR500s. Fetters carded a 4.369-second time in 600cc Four-Stroke class for that win. Gordon Green moved to within two points of class-leading Jacob Tackitt by taking the win in the 200cc ciass. Riding a 19B4 KDX200, Green overtook Brent Warfel for the win with a 4. 731·second time on his second ride. Fortner was also a double winner, taking the wins in the 600cc and 750cc classes. His 4.124-second ride on his CR500 in the first round held up for the class win in the 600cc class, with Jake Tackitt his closest challenger, posting a very quick 4.142 seconds. His second win came in the 750cc class with a 4.408·second time on his Kawasaki triple. Results 50 AUTO: I. Dylan Brl'ldy (Pol): 2. Dakota Blakeny (Cob): 3. Samantha Brown (KTM): 4.
