WERA Vintage Road Racing Round 9: Carolina Motorsports Park Rain Man By STEVE STASER KERSHAW, SC, JUNE 22 Mark Nadelkov from the Team Steve·O's sta· ble brought his powerful 750cc Yamaha to this South Carolina track, badly needing a win to keep pace in the points race. Having taken a few weeks off to get married, he needed to make up ground. However, his plans disintegrated when his usually dependable big twin dropped a valve in Friday's practice session. All seemed lost for Nadelkov, as the only spare bike the team had was Eric Cook's Vin· tage One Honda 350cc backup. It was a ride, but the 40-hp Honda would have to go against the 75·plus·hp big twins in the Vintage Three and Vintage Four classes. Race day dawned overcast, which had Nadelkov doing a rain dance· as a wet track is the greatest equalizer for a smaller machine competing in a bigger class. In Saturday moming's practice (run in dry conditions), the little Honda was clearly outmuscled. Mark Mitchell's big BMW 750 was tuming lap times two second faster. The rain dance continued. As the Vintage Four class pulled to the line for race two, it not only started to rain ~ the skies opened up! The little Honda grabbed the Vintage Four holeshot and was up running through he downpour with the first· and sec· ond·placed riders in Formula Two·Stroke (which started ahead of the twins) by the end of the first lap. Nadelkov was even holding down second overall for a while. The Honda was sticking like glue; Nadelkov stated later, "It never slipped on me once." Mitchell was holding down second but couldn't keep the big twin steady, almost losing it in tum one on 76 JULv31,2002' cue I _ lap five. Nadelkov came across the finish with both hands pointing to the sky. "That was my only chance for a victory," said the elated rider. "The rain dance worked!" The Formula 500, Vintage One and 350 GP classes had started off the day's racing, and Mother Nature played a part in this race also. The three grids blasted off the line with a dry track, but the rain started coming down by lap two. Number·one plate holder Mark Mor· row took his MRA Yamaha 400 to the front and never looked back as he led every lap to take the Formula 500 and overall win. Gene Lucas, on his Paul Hidey Yamaha. put up a valiant fight for the first few laps but couldn't stay with the champ and settled for second. Robert Macaulay brought the Team Vintage Specialties Yamaha home third. Meanwhile, the undefeated Buff Harsh had left the Vintage One crowd behind on his Todd Henning 350 Honda. The two Team Steve·O's riders, Eric Cook and Mike Schulte, were involved in a fierce battle for second on the slippery track. Harsh had built a very comfort· able lead by halfway and he started to cruise, not wanting to push it too hard in the rain. That tactic kind of backfired on him, as John Rickard. running third in Formula 500 at the time, was coming like on like gangbusters after a bad start. As Rickard caught Harsh in turn 12, the two collided and went off track and down in a long, soggy slide. Cook and Schulte's battle came to an end when Schulte's Honda went off in turn one. Cook emerged from the spray to take his first win of the season. Steven Mahanes took his beautiful Crockett Racing Ducati 350 to the win in the 350 GP, over the Bulldog Cycles Yamaha of Carl Anderson and Larry Cook's Honda. n __ S Carolina Motorsports Park: Jon Jarvais (796) got the jump on the Vinlage Five crowd in Kershaw, South Carolina, and led the race from flag to flag. Sleven Shoul (154) came home second, with Kith Burkingstock (behind Jarvais) taking third. "Paybacks are hell," said Mitchell, lining up for the Vintage Three class in race three. as the sun came out. The Moto Europa BMW rider was going to show Nadelkov the fast way around a dry track, putting all that horsepower to the tr8ck this time. Mitchell left the Vintage Three gang in his dust as he took the win by a big margin. In the biggest grid of the day, Jon J8rvais led the entire Vintage Five race on his Pirelli/Pitbull·sponsored EX500 Kawasaki. David Shout handled second, with Kith Burkingstock taking his Lockhart Kawasaki home third. After finishing second in Formula 500 to the fast Morrow, Lucas brought his Yamaha to the line in the Formula RD contest with win· ning on his mind. Lucas had been the fastest RD in the morning practice session. But his trigger finger was too qUick and he jumped the start. The meatball flag came out, and Lucas came in for the stop-and-go penalty on lap two. Vintage Specialties captain Lynford Gar· land was racing Lucas hard and was right beside him as they raced across the line as starter Chuck Edgeworth was displaying the penalty fiag. Lucas did a picture·perfect stop· and-go and worked his way all the way back to second, but he couldn't catch the fast Gar· land. Macauley grabbed third. Carolina Motorsports Park Kershaw. South Carolina Results: June 22, 2002
