JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS LOS BANOS, CA, JUNE 22 Round two of the 2002 AMP Top Gun Summer·X Series, presented by Alpinestars, Merced Powersports and Swift Auto World, welcomed yet another huge field of nearly 400 riders. Clawson Motorsports/Fox/Shift/lRS/ Spy-backed Jeff Pestana came packing heat, as he bested the 12·rider field in the evening's main event, the Top Gun Shootout. A regular on the Nor Cal scene. the wily veteran was lined up second to last in the sin· gle·row start and had speedster Scott Davis behind him and a whole host of fast guys in front of him, including Kenny Heess and Daniel Blair. But Pestana picked his tines carefully as he steadily made his way through the pack, and by keeping mistakes to a mini· mum, he rode a nearly flawless race all the way to the checkers. "That feit good, and you know, I wasn't really pressing or that aggressive tonight," said Pestana. "The track was a little choppy tonight, but I just concentrated on not letting Daniel get out of my sights, and when he went down, I took advantage of it. He was riding fast, and I don't know if I could have passed him; it would have been close." Coming off a first· round win, Blair looked poised to go two for two in the series until a midrace fall spoiled his chances. The MXH/Powerhouse{rhor/Big Gun-backed rider had taken over the lead on the fifth lap and appeared to have the speed to take the win, but a mistake in a tight left·hander put him and his Yamaha on the ground. Blair still mus· tered up a solid second·place finish after mak· ing a clever last·turn pass on Heess, but he was later seen laid out in the pits, being attended to by medical personnel. "I crashed real hard in my first Pro moto tonight and tweaked my knee," Blair said. "When I went down in the Top Gun race, I aggravated it even more, but I got up and pushed all the way to the end. It was hurting bad, and when I got back to my pit, I just fell to the ground, and Dr. Cohen came over and checked it out. Hopefully it will heal up by next week." Robbed of a second-place finish was Heess. The Gilroy MC Center/Shift/IRS/Scoll rider was riding a great race. keeping pace with Pestana lap after lap, but, coming around the last tum before the checkers, Heess tried to outguess Blair, who had reeled him in after rebounding from his fall. Heess looked back to see what line Blair was taking and in a blink of an eye. Blair scooted by. Although frustrated cue I e by his mistake, Heess was still pleased with his ride on the night. "If I didn't look back, I would have had him: Heess said. "I don't why I did, I just think I started worrying about him on the last lap and I shouidn't have. But I rode good and was able to keep Pestana in sight. I'll just try again next week and hopefully win one." In the BOcc ranks, Kyle Kent barely edged out Beau Weigand for the Supermini Division One win. It was a near-photo finish at the checkers in moto two as the two riders sailed across the finish-line tabletop side by side. Weigand returned to claim victory in Inter· mediate class with back-to-back wins over Justin Enos, who tallied up a 3-2 score for second overall. Yamaha pilot Nathan Hollister claimed the victory in Supermini Division Two, with Marcus Bradshaw taking the runner· up spot. "Rippin'" Ruben Hernandez topped the Novice class with a 3· I score over Jarred Holt, who tumed in a 1-3 effort on the evening. In the Beginner ranks, it was another split Division, with Blake Jump (1,1) taking the win over Joseph Romano (2·2) in Division One, while Larry Vasquez took care of business in Division Two with a win over Mitchell Bellamy.
