Martinez placed fourth overall in the 125cc D class in the Riders' Summer Shootout Series. Riders' Summer Shootout Series Round 6: FasTrac MX Park Livingston First at FasTrac Finale Bv AUSTIN GATUN CAIRO. GA. JUNE 15 The Rider's Summer Shootout Series came to a close at FasTrac MX Park, site of round six. Series awards were presented to fifth place, with class winners taking home 5 1/2-foot trophies. The top five also received a prize pack from sponsors The Cycle Shop. Cycle Nation, KaceTeK. Florida Motor-Sports. Miller BMW, and Bulldog Cycles. With his 250cc B title already wrapped up, Chase Livingston also competed in the Youth (16·29) division. KXl25-mounted Rion Baker pulled a surprise holeshot over the Honda 450-mounted Livingston in the first combined Youth (16-29) and (12-15) moto. Cody Johnson, Matt Hamilton and Massey Dandridge followed through tum one. livingston moved to first but couldn't break away from Baker until the last lap. Yamaha riders Johnson and Hamilton maintained their positions the entire distance. Stephen Rawls moved to fifth. Livingston dominated moto two from start. to finish. He was able to harness the torque of his big-bore four-stroke by going into the berms a gear high, then rocketing down the next straight. Baker was unable to challenge Livingston's overwhelming effort and placed second. Chase Borders moved to fourth and then began to hound Dandridge for third. He came up half a bikelength short at the flag. Joe Bruer had a shot at series perfection in the Over 40 class; he had won 10 motos in a row coming into the race. In the first combined Over 3010ver 40 moto. Mark Grant, looking strong after his spill at round two of the series, quickly overcame Bruer's holeshot start. Bruer went back out front on the long straight before the finish-line jump. Steve Raybom joined the pair to set the fastest age-group pace of the series. Bruer gained a small cushion halfway through lap two, but then disaster struck: Coming out of an inside line. he cased a small double and took a soft fall. Grant. who had railed the outside line with Raybom hot on his rear fender, was unable to miss the fallen Honda rider and rode over his lower back. After several tense minutes, Bruer was able to remount and comple~e the lap. Grant won, ahead of Rayborn and KTM-mounted Jason Swain. Bruer and Rayborn both registered a DNS for race two. Grant Jed from start to finish. Johnny Borders held off a closing Swain on the last lap and placed second. Kawasaki jockeys David Armstrong and Robert Godfrey came in next. 74 JULY 31, 2002· cue I e Newton. Alabama's Marcus Braswell scored his first win of the series in the 125cc D class. He cut under Kenny Stinsons's Suzuki for the lead in race one. Billy Jones ran third. The lead duo battled the entire distance, with Stinson coming back to win the mota. Jones led fellow Yamaha riders Aiex Mcinnis and Jon Martinez to the flag. Stinson overcame Braswell's early lead in race two, moving from fourth to first. With the overall on the line, Braswell was able to maneuver his YZ250F around Stinson for the moto win. Martinez held third until the last lap, when he was taken out by another rider. Mcinnis topped Jones in a tie breaker for third. 4-3 to 3-4. Richard Edwards led the first Hobby moto. ahead of Kevin Crewe, Kim Lelli and Clay· hatchee, Alabama's Rodney Parsons. Jack Devilbiss came through the pack and placed second, just one second behind Edwards. Parsons held third going into the final turn, only to have Lelli cut underneath and lead him to the checkers, 40 feet away. After placing ninth in moto one. Jody Goodwin was a key player in race two. Edwards led the race, followed by Devilbiss, who stalled and dropped to eighth. Goodwin moved to second and challenged Edwards for the lead over a tabletop. Edwards held firm. At the beginning of the last lap, Goodwin finally put his Honda 450 out front. Edwards stayed with him and the pair raced side by side down the final straight. Edwards was unable to make the final turn and ran off the track. Unaware of Edwards' predicament, Goodwin kept his throttle pinned and stood his machine vertical over the finish-line jump. He couldn't avoid a crash, but his win vaulted him to third overall. Edwards re-entered the track and kept second, ahead of Crewe, Devilbiss and Don Bush. BUDDS CREEK, MD, JUNE 16-17 Budds Creek is one of the several rounds of the Women's Motocross League Series that features a two-day format. Mota one is on Sat· urday and the second mota is on Sunday, during half-time of the men's AMA Nationai series. Saturday started rainy, but as the day went on, the rain subsided and the track got better and beller. By the time moto one kicked off, the mud was not too deep, and it offered a few different lines around the track. Passing would be tough but not impossible. When the gate dropped into the Budds Creek mud for the fIrst Pro moto. Jessica Patterson put her Kawasaki out front and led the pack through the first corner. As the pack went down the first hill. Stefy Bau powered her SRS/V3 Inc. Honda around Patterson and took the lead. Bau qUickly opened up a small lead, leaving Patterson to contend with Tania Satchwell, who was on her tail. Behind SatchwelJ were Vania Medrano and Heidi Cooke. By the end of the second lap, Bau had added another second to her lead, while Patterson still had the number·one-plated Yamaha of Satchwell on her tail. Medrano was still in fourth, but behind her the field was swap· ping positions quickly. Amber Hughes was now in fifth, Aubriana Dunn was sixth. and Jacki Hudson had now moved into seventh. Medrano had problems on iap three and went down, allowing Hughes to move into fourth, and Sheena Patterson made a big move forward into sixth, behind Hudson. As soon as Medrano was up and running - in last place - Jessica Patterson went down. Now Bau had a huge lead on the second-placed Satchwell. Bau held on for an easy win. with Satchwell keeping her AGPIAnswer Yamaha in second. Hughes held on for third. Sheena charged her way into fourth, and Sarah Whit- more put on a great show, moving her Yamaha up from way back in the pack to finish fifth. Jessica Patterson did not finish the mota, and Medrano moved from last place to 12th and salvaged some points. Sunday promised to be a better day. The sun was out and there was no rain in sight. The track was perfect, and the crowd was huge. In the second Pro moto, Whitmore led the pack around the first comer, with Jessica Pat· terson in second. Medrano and Satchwell were side by side in a battle for third. Moto-one winner Bau was in seventh. Whitmore was on the gas and she pulled a nice lead early in the mota, but Jessica can never be counted out, and she was soon making time on Whitmore. Medrano had made the move into third place by the start of lap two. Whitmore would prove to be solid and hold down the lead as the moto wore on, but Jessica was soon all over her, making a challenge for the lead at almost every corner. Bau had made a charge and by the halfway point of lap two she was challenging for third. Bau was aggressive and collided with Medrano while trying to make the pass. Bau went down. suffering a nasty cut on her arm and losing several spokes in her front wheel. but she remounted after losing several positions and was now in ninth. Out front, the two leaders battled lap after lap until Jessica finally set up Whitmore and made the pass right at the finish line with only one lap to go. Jessica held on for the win, with Witmore claiming a strong second; her 5-2 score was good for second overall on the weekend. Hudson moved through the field and found herself in third by moto's end, and with a 7-3 score she took third on the podium. Bau stuck it out and worked her way into fifth at the finish, and her 1·5 tally was good enough to take the overall and move herself into a comfortable points lead in the series.
