PHOENIX, AZ, JUNE 22
Mike Nagai and Michael Blose won their classes at the sixth' and final round of the CMC
Copperstate Classic, presented by Mel Clayton, Gordy's, FMF, Franklin & Associates,
AEO, and Bent. Nagai topped the 125cc
Junior class, while Blose won both the 125cc
Pro and 250cc Pro classes,
In the 125vv Junior race, Nagai pulled the
holeshot and was pursued by Mike Beaver,
Nate Adams and A,J, Petrucci.
"Here, the start is everything," said NagaI,
"and if you get it like I did, that's the race."
Kyle Jones went down in the first comer,
hurting his bid for the series championship.
Adams went on the inside of Beaver in tum
one, moving into second. Ryan Robinson, last
round's winner, came out of the gate just outside the top 10, but after lap one he moved up
to seventh. Robinson got on the inside of Ryan
McPeters at the end of the back straight and
completed the pass on the right-hander for
sixth. A lap later, Robinson passed Trenton
Straub for fifth as they came out of tum one.
D.C. Jones passed McPeters going into "The
Pit" for seventh. Nagai went on to win the
moto, over Adams.
"Nate Adams pressured me early in the
moto, but I pulled away from him" said NagaI.
Third went to Beaver, foilowed by Petrucci,
Robinson, Straub and Jones.
Straub pulled the second-moto holeshot,
followed by Troy Allen, D.C. Jones, Robinson,
Kyle Jones and NagaI. Then, on the front section, Nagai passed both Kyie Jones and
Robinson for fourth place, The next time
around, Allen came on the inside of Straub
and for a moment he had the lead as the
two came over the finish line. Straub outpowered Allen on the sweeper going onto the back
straight.
Nagai worked around D.C. Jones on the
back straight for third. Straub had his hands
full, with Allen and Nagai within feet of each
other. Straub went into tum one on the inside
while Allen went on the fast outside line and
Nagai tried to go inside to pass for second.

but had too much speed and slid out.

some space as Allen attempted to hold back
NagaI. Allen and Nagai came into the infield
side by side and IT carried through to the front
straight. Straub held on for the moto win.

to the Gordy's Bicycles-sponsored NagaI.
Fourth went to Kyle Jones, followed by
Adams, Robinson, Cory Bulliner and Beaver.
In the first 125cc Pro moto, Blose and his
rival Bryan Clevenger touched going into the
first comer.
"I wanted to get in front of Bryan, who
has been having a good series, and we
touched: said Blose. "Luckily, neither one of
us went down."
Third belonged to Ryan Wilson, followed
by Brandon Schlensig. Fifth was Bryan Allen,
making his return since recovering from frae·
tured ankles back in March. Blose slowly
pulled away from Clevenger,
"'n practice, I broke a reed in my practice
bike: said the Suzuki/Bent{rrinity/yPE{Thorbacked Blose, "so my dad went home and
brought my bike I used for the Supercross
season. With the local races, I prefer to ride
my practice bike, since the jumps are not as
big compared to the AMA Supercross track."
Midway through the moto, Schlensig slid
out in tum one and dropped to the back. Then
Beaver moved by Wilson as the two came out
of the infield section. Blose took the moto win
over Clevenger, Beaver, Wilson, Allen, Justin
McMurrich and Schlensig.
Blose led moto two, followed by Wilson,
Schlensig, Ailen, Beaver and McMurrich.
Beaver passed Allen for fourth as the pack
came by the bleacher section. Then McMurrich went underneath Allen for fifth. Just
before the white-flag lap, Allen set up an outside/inside move on McMurrich to retake fifth.
Blose won the moto, followed by Wilson,
Schlensig, Beaver, Allen and McMurrich.
Blose controlled both 250cc Pro motos, as
the class enjoyed its biggest turnout of the
season. Each of Blose's competitors ran into

JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS
LOS BANOS, CA, JUNE 22
Round two of the 2002 AMP Top Gun Summer·X Series, presented by Alpinestars,
Merced Powersports and Swift Auto World,
welcomed yet another huge field of nearly 400
riders. Clawson Motorsports/Fox/Shift/lRS/
Spy-backed Jeff Pestana came packing heat,
as he bested the 12·rider field in the evening's
main event, the Top Gun Shootout.
A regular on the Nor Cal scene. the wily
veteran was lined up second to last in the sin·
gle·row start and had speedster Scott Davis
behind him and a whole host of fast guys in
front of him, including Kenny Heess and
Daniel Blair. But Pestana picked his tines
carefully as he steadily made his way through
the pack, and by keeping mistakes to a mini·
mum, he rode a nearly flawless race all the
way to the checkers.
"That feit good, and you know, I wasn't
really pressing or that aggressive tonight,"
said Pestana. "The track was a little choppy
tonight, but I just concentrated on not letting
Daniel get out of my sights, and when he went
down, I took advantage of it. He was riding
fast, and I don't know if I could have passed
him; it would have been close."
Coming off a first· round win, Blair looked
poised to go two for two in the series until a
midrace fall spoiled his chances. The
MXH/Powerhouse{rhor/Big Gun-backed rider
had taken over the lead on the fifth lap and
appeared to have the speed to take the win,
but a mistake in a tight left·hander put him
and his Yamaha on the ground. Blair still mus·
tered up a solid second·place finish after mak·
ing a clever last·turn pass on Heess, but he
was later seen laid out in the pits, being
attended to by medical personnel.
"I crashed real hard in my first Pro moto
tonight and tweaked my knee," Blair said.
"When I went down in the Top Gun race, I
aggravated it even more, but I got up and
pushed all the way to the end. It was hurting
bad, and when I got back to my pit, I just fell
to the ground, and Dr. Cohen came over and
checked it out. Hopefully it will heal up by
next week."
Robbed of a second-place finish was
Heess. The Gilroy MC Center/Shift/IRS/Scoll
rider was riding a great race. keeping pace
with Pestana lap after lap, but, coming around
the last tum before the checkers, Heess tried
to outguess Blair, who had reeled him in after
rebounding from his fall. Heess looked back to
see what line Blair was taking and in a blink of
an eye. Blair scooted by. Although frustrated
cue
I
e
by his mistake, Heess was still pleased with
his ride on the night.
"If I didn't look back, I would have had
him: Heess said. "I don't why I did, I just think
I started worrying about him on the last lap
and I shouidn't have. But I rode good and was
able to keep Pestana in sight. I'll just try again
next week and hopefully win one."
In the BOcc ranks, Kyle Kent barely edged
out Beau Weigand for the Supermini Division
One win. It was a near-photo finish at the
checkers in moto two as the two riders sailed
across the finish-line tabletop side by side.
Weigand returned to claim victory in Inter·
mediate class with back-to-back wins over
Justin Enos, who tallied up a 3-2 score for
second overall.
Yamaha pilot Nathan Hollister claimed the
victory in Supermini Division Two, with Marcus Bradshaw taking the runner· up spot.
"Rippin'" Ruben Hernandez topped
the Novice class with a 3· I score over
Jarred Holt, who tumed in a 1-3 effort on the
evening.
In the Beginner ranks, it was another split
Division, with Blake Jump (1,1) taking the
win over Joseph Romano (2·2) in Division
One, while Larry Vasquez took care of business in Division Two with a win over Mitchell
Bellamy.
