CMC Skagit Powersports Pac West Nationals Round 5: Thurston County ORV Park STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY liGHT MCCLEARY, WA, JUNE 29 /0) ound five of the CMC Skagit Pow~ ersports Pac West Nationals were held amid a variety of inclement weather conditions, but AMA Supercross and National regular Jason McCormick proved he could ride them all. In fact, the muddier the conditions were, the more the National number- 76 plate holder felt right at home. This was evidenced by McCormick's latest rampage; the rider from Vancouver, Washington, went four for four for the 125cc and 250cc Pro-class wins at Thurston County ORV Park. Yakima, Washington's Dan Moore took command of the day's first moto, picking up his first of two overall wins in the Vet Over 30 Pro class, beating Oregon's Tony Graves, who was also Suzuki-mounted. Moore darted to the head of the pack several motos later - in the first 125cc Pro moto - although his lead would be a brief one, as McCormick managed to slingshot into the lead, dropping Moore to second. By the end of lap one, McCormick had checked out, leaving Moore all to himself in second. Oregon's Mike Corder, Husky rider Wesley Parker, KTM-mounted Garhett Carter and Yamaha-supported J. Whipple spent much of the moto in a close-knit confrontation for third, a position the Team Green-backed Corder would possess after breaking free from the Washington trio. McCormick easily won, placing a 10second gap on Moore, while Moore enjoyed a similar margin in a secondplace finish over Corder. Montana's Cameron Weaver was also impressive, placing his YZ into fourth, followed by Parker, Whipple and Carter. In moto two, the lone Husky rider in the field, Parker, took command in the soupy conditions, but McCormick blew past Parker coming out of turn one to take a lead he'd not relinquish. "The muddier, the better," McCormick had said earlier in a brief interview with announcer Paul Watts. "I wish it would rain morel" McCormick got his wish, and the harder the rain fell, the more McCormick seemed to pick up the pace while pulling out the day's largest lead. Corder, also an exceptional mud rider, forged forward from sixth at the start to second late in the moto. Corder finished ahead of Moore to snare second overall on a 3-2 tally, while Moore followed Corder across the line to net third with a 2-3 score. Carter finished fourth in the moto, but it was the impressive Parker (5-5) who nabbed fourth overall, ahead of Carter (7 -4). McCormick was equally impressive in the 250cc Pro class: McCormick grabbed the lead at the drop of the gate and never looked back, taking the win some 12 seconds ahead of his closest competition, Moore. Yamaha-mounted Whipple rode a solid race to finish third, slightly ahead of Corder, Graves, Parker and Konrad Kuest. McCormick's four-for-four tally came to pass after dominating the second moto, enjoying a six-second lead on Whipple after one lap. McCormick's lead ballooned to as much as 14 seconds late in the moto for an easy win. Whipple showcased his mud-riding prowess with his best performance of the day, a secondplace finish. Graves narrowly edged Corder at the finish to grab third, although it was Moore who netted third overall, behind Whipple's 3-2 tally, but ahead of Graves (5-3) and Corder (4-4). The Amateur riders got a bit of a reprieve, as only the Professional riders would contest two motos on the day in the wheel-plugging muck. While there were many success stories on the day, there were also tales of heartbreak and disappointment, such as that of Suzuki rider Alec Watts. With a huge lead in hand in the 85cc (7-11) class, Watts fell some six feet short of a win in the soupy conditions and was unable to pick up his RM. Washington's Michael Schmeck was looking to capitalize after trailing Watts for the entire moto but he, too, fell, some 10 feet behind Watts. Suzuki rider Cody Conner made the best out of the other riders' misfortunes and picked up the win. Schmeck got rolling quickest to finish second, followed by Oregon's Jared Wood. Others, though, fared quite well. Cobra rider Cody Evanson picked up a pair of wins, posting the Pee Wee Open and Pee Wee (7-8) victories, beating Polini rider Tyler Van Zandt in both. Evanson fell short of a threeclass win tally after some problems in the 65cc (0-8) class, which was won by his relative Hunter Evanson, who was also aboard a Kawasaki. Idaho's River Dahlquist separated the two Evansons overall. Suzuki-mounted Dave Silvestri also stayed upright for two class victories, posting the Old-Timer (Over 40) Master and Vet Intermediateclass wins, although he did get a bit of a break when former Alaska State champ Jeff MacDonald tangled with a lapped rider and handed Silvestri the win. Silvestri also placed second in the Up The Hill Intermediate class in his three-class effort on the day. eN Jason McConnlck showed his mud-riding prowess by dominating the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes 51 the fifth round 01 the CMC Skagit Powersports Pac Wen Nationals.
