Victorville Speedway Opener Wheel 2Wheel Raceway Riverside MX: Kevin Knight scored wins in the 125cc and 250cc Money classes at round five of the Riders' Summer Shootout Series in Newton, Alabama. Riders' Summer Shootout Series Round 5: Riverside MX By MICHAEL MAHER Bruer, Duprel Racin' at the River By HUGH GATUN NEWTON, AL, JUNE 8 The Cycle Shop of Tallahassee-sponsored Riders' Summer Shootout Series hit the home stretch at Riverside MX, site of the fifth round of six. Joe Bruer and Davy Duprel continued their rivalry from the previous round, where Duprel topped Bruer on a tie breaker for the overall win in the Over 30/0ver 40 contest Bruer used the power of his Honda CRSOO to lead Duprel. David Armstrong and Tony Hardy in the first Over 30/0ver 40 moto. Halfway through lap two, Duprel began to probe for an opening around the leader. Bruer fell and both Duprel and Hardy went past. Duprel posted a large win while Bruer went under Hardy's KX250 in a right-hander to place second. Armstrong was fourth. Bruer, Duprel and Armstrong hit the first turn ahead of Carl Drummond in race two. Bruer ran strong through the whoops and was able to keep Duprel at bay. Hardy moved to third after a poor start. Duprel pressured Bruer on the final lap. but the veteran controlled the inside lines and held firm. Duprel didn't concede defeat until the final straight, when he coasted his YZ426F across the finish line. Hardy was third again. Montgomery, Alabama. rider Jonathan and Justin Woodfin turned in the Ironman performance of the day. The 11-year-old twins competed in the 6Sec (l 0- 11), 8Sec Beginner and 8Sec (7-11) classes. At one point in the program. the pair took the checkered fiag and headed straIght back to the staging area for another class. Pike Road, Alabama's Kendall Mason led a Suzuki sweep of four of the top five positions in the 85cc (7-11) class. The husky 10-yearold muscled his RM85 around the sandy course and beat out Matt Williams on a tie breaker, 2-1 to 1-2. Christian Tramel and Mason led race one; they collided and went down together in the high-banked second turn. They got going at the rear of the field. The RMs of Williams and the Woodfins held the top three positions. Mason kept the throllie wide open and moved to second. Williams posted a lO-second win. Tramel came out on top of a close battle for third with Justin Woodfin. In moto two, Williams started first, ahead of Mason and Tramel. Mason aggressively launched his machine over the first double and took the point. Tramel and Justin Woodfin Hicks Triumphs in Victorville Opener followed the lead duo. Mason never gave Williams the chance to see a clear track, and he took the win. Tramel and the Woodfins rounded out the top five. Series contender Kenny Stinson had a big day in the 125cc D class, scoring his second win of the series. He started moto one in third, then cut under YZ2SOF-mounted Alex Mclnnis for the lead on lap one. Marcus Braswell lost valuable series points when he fell and dropped to last. Rusty Locklar had his oldermodel RM 125 singing and he cut under Jon Martinez for third. Next, he went after Mcinnis on the last lap. Stinson was an easy winner, over Mcinnis, Locklar and Martinez. Martinez got the holeshot in race two but couldn't hold back Stinson. Locklar started fourth, behind Yamaha rider Tyler Pogue. Mclnnis had a difficult time: after moving to third. he stalled his four-stroke and was unable to refire it. Stinson won by 10 seconds. Martinez's 4-2 tally was good for second overall. ahead of Locklar (3-4). Twenty riders lined up for the 85cc Beginner class. Kyle Thomas pulled a strong holeshot in race one, followed by Jeremy Thomas, Dennis Damen and Josh P. Adams. Dennis moved to first but then fell. Jeremy grabbed the lead and pulled away for the win on his CR85. Adams held on to second. Dennis came back through the pack for fourth, behind a stubborn Joe Terry. Jeremy led race two from start to finish. Kawasaki-mounted Brandon Devilbiss shadowed him the entire distance. Adams fell after the small whoop section but was able to hold on to third. Terry and Damen were next across the line. A record 15 riders lined up for the Hobby class. Rain began to fall as Richard Edwards led Jody Goodwin and Kim Lelli through the first tum in moto one. Both Goodwin and Lelli ran into trouble and dropped back. Marion Thomas put his Honda in second and challenged Edwards for the lead. He held on for a narrow two-second win. Series rider Rodney Parsons was third, ahead of Yamaha-mounted Buck Holmes. Lelli, Jack Devilbiss and Don Bush led early in race two before positions changed quickly. Devilbiss took charge. with Thomas and Edwards moving in behind the Honda rider. On lap two, Thomas passed for the lead in the S section and scored the win. DR-Z400-mounted Edwards and Honda CRF450R rider Goodwin followed Devilbiss in. Parsons placed fifth. VICTORVILlE. CA, JUNE 9 Speedway motorcycle racing veteran Dukie Errnolenko has brought speedway racing back to the high desert as the promoter of racing at Wheel 2 Wheel Raceway. located on the grounds of the former Speedway USA, where the sport was a regular Saturday night staple for years. For the season opener at the new track. Ermolenko gathered together an impressive collection of the sport's top names, including local hero and current National Champion Chris Manchester, to compete in a championship format event that would culminate in the top four points scorers facing off in the main event, the "Denim Doctor Shootout." In the end, Gary Hicks was the night's big winner. but he had to beat some of the best in the business to do it. The night began with crowd favorite "Fast Eddie" Castro leading from the start in the opening heat to score the victory over Hicks, Kill Nay and Shaun Harmatiuk. Josh Larsen won heat two, over Sean McDougall and Chris Kerr, while raceway owner John Aden crashed out. Manchester thrilled the crowd by winning his opening ride over Bobby Krips, Andy Northrup and Bobby "Boogalo" Schwartz. Scott Brant finished out the round with an easy victory over Shawn McConnell, Brad Sauer and Robbie Sauer. Round two opened with Larsen taking the win over Northrup and Kay, with McConnell crashing out. Hicks won his next ride easily over Krips, McDougall and Robbie Sauer. Manchester shot out into a big lead in the next heat. only to break down, while Brant went on to score the win over Harmatiuk and Aden. Castro finished out the round with a victory over Schwartz. Kerr and Brad Sauer. Manchester opened round three with an easy victory over Brad Sauer. McDougall and Nay. Larsen stayed perfect for the night as he outdueled Brant to win the next race, over Schwartz and Hicks. Kerr then won the following event, beating out Northrup, Harmatiuk and Robbie Sauer. McConnell held off a charge by Aden to win the next heat, with Castro third and Krips bringing up the rear. Aden started out round four with a victory over Nay, Schwartz and Robbie Sauer. Hicks took the early lead in the next heat. only to be passed by Manchester, who took the win over Hicks, McConnell and Kerr. Krips took the early lead in the next heat but Larsen soon gobbled him up and took yet another win, over Krips, Brad Sauer and Harmatiuk. Brant won a confusing event over Northrup and McDougall after the originai start was redfiagged because Castro touched the starter's tapes and was disqualified. Brant began round five with an easy victory over Kerr. Krips and Nay. Hicks added three points to his tally as he won, over Northrup, with Brad Sauer going down and Aden being tossed for touching the tapes.
