Pro N8tional. I got the first two holeshots in the 125cc Pro-Sport and ran my own race. Yeah, Ward got me in the final mota, but I got him early off the big dropaway jump. I love the way Red Bud takes care of the track, and it gets so rough! Much thanks to Mike and Kris of Nevin's Kawasaki. They have been good to me. Troy Lee, Pro Circuit, Delta Force, Alpinestars, Renthal landj Scott USA are my great sponsors." Second overall in the 125cc Pro Sport contest went to Whitcraft, who placed third in each moto. "I ran consistent today." Whitcraft said. "' wanted to win, but Penrod is fast. I'm happy with my peJformance, but! am going to have to train harder. I wish Ohio had a.track like Red Budl Man, it gets so rough, but they water and it never is dusty. The double jumps down there lin the Valley) are great. The deep ruts that form keep you on the pegs. My goal when I get to Loretta's is to place in the top five. I would like to thank Sport Cycles, MXRealator.com, Pro Action, EVS land] Holeshot Motor Sports for great support." Brad Modjewski went 4-2-8 for third overall. Fourth overall went to Nielsen/Jackson PeJformance/Maxima Oil/Bridgestone/White Brothers-backed Honda rider Roy Horton, with a 8-6-6 tally. C._ NETRA Enduro Series Round 3: Connecticut Ramblers Somers Run Enduro Geraci's Long Somers Trip By JOE MCl.AOGHUN SOMERS, CT, JUNE 2 Connecticut Ramblers Somers Run Enduro trail boss Hans Neff laid out a course that was a real test of endurance. Hans advertised a long and challenging ride, and he held true to his word. Rain again was a factor, only this time it was a downpour on the morning of the race, which set a slimy stage. The course was more than 100 miles long for the A and B riders, and around 80 miles for the C, Super Senior, Masters and Women riders, and both versions included quite a bit of new trail. Without the rain, the event would have been challenging enough. A good coating of goo on the rocks and roots made it really gnarly! Unfortunately for Pat Timothy, his win streak was stopped at two, as the multi-time hare scrambles champion suffered a broken wrist after tumbling down a slimy, rock-infested downhill. Hopefully Timothy will mend quickly and get back in the heat of things. With Timothy out of contention, Anthony Geraci stole the show and took a very hardearned Overall High Point. Neil Dennett gave chase on his Cliffs Cycles KTM. Geraci and Dennett tied, each losing 34 points, with Geraci edging out Dennett by 12 seconds after more than 150 route-sheet miles. Jerry Madore and Rick Claxton kept the top two honest, finishing with 36 points apiece and separoted by only 10 seconds for third and fourth overall, respectively. KTM/Razee's Peter Tanner rounded out the top five with 37 points. The 2001 A-Bantam runner-up, Marty Griff, rode hard to the A High Point and sixth 80 JULY 10. 2002' c u e . . . Clarence RIl6 (Yam). Jason Rodrigue, with 60 points, is writing his own ticket to the A class. taking home his second-ever B High Point trophy by a huge margin over Gary Ryan, who had 88. Rodrigue is young, so he could be a real threat as he matures. In the C class, Lee Wise earned his first High Point, dropping 47 on the shortened course. Perpetual Masters' class winner Tom Farley added yet another first-place trophy to his mantle. Despite his injUry and subsequent DNF, Timothy holds on to a slim two-point lead in the series standings, followed by Claxton with Tanner, only two points further behind for third. Luckily for the NETRA Enduro Series reguli!lrs, the season takes a much-needed four-week break until June 30, when the series heads west to the Berkshire Odyssey Enduro. n B BNTM: 1. Daniel S By JASON WEIGANDT DELMONT, PA, JUNE 8-9 With the annual Air Nautique AMA Amateur National Championships at Loretta Lynn's on the horizon, the Northeast's top Amateur motocrossers converged on Steel City USA to earn a berth in the biggest Amateur race in the nation. However, while Amateur racing normally focuses on young riders, the most impressive rider at Steel City was Yamaha's Kevin Walker, a 32-year-old from Tennessee. Walker won every mota he entered, including the Over 25 and Over 30 c18sses, 8S well as the highly competitive 1250c Pro Sport class. "Hey, after 23 years of racing, it all comes to you pretty easy: said the friendly Walker. It did at Steel City, but things will get interesting in August, when Walker faces former AMA Supercross Champion Jeff Emig. "Yamaha wants me to do the age classes, so I'll be in Plus 25 and Plus 30," said the Yamah8/Sinisalo/Big Gun/Pro Action/Araibacked rider. Regarding the prospect of facing Emig at Loretta's, Walker added, "That's fine. I'd love to race him'" While Walker hos become a sort of motocross-playground legend, 0 few younger riders are also forging their reputations this year - such as Ryan Mills and Gavin Gracyk, two teenagers who took home wins at Steel City. "I wanted to be up front this weekend," said Amsoil/Factory Connection/Honda/Journey's/Doc Martins-backed Mills, "but there are a lot of fast riders here this weekend. I got some good starts and came out with some mota wins." Mills took the 125cc A-class victory. Gracyk couldn't quite hang with Mills on the 125, but he got his revenge by winning the 250cc A class. "I did well on the 250, but I'm going to keep training hard and come out ready on the 125 at Loretta's, too: said Gracyk. Backed by Team Green Kawasaki, GT Thunder, Motowerks, Thor and Mid-Ohio Kawasaki, Gracyk feels he can still improve. "I feel that I can do way better. This race is a different story than Loretta's. I'm just trying to get in and stay heaIthy." These riders were only a part of the nearly 700-rider field at Steel City, the final qualifying round for the Air Nautique AMA Amateur National Championship at Loretta Lynn's. Steel City proved to be a great facility for the Northeast Regional Championship. The Racer Productions team hosting the event worked the track through heavy rains earlier in the week, and by the time the weekend sunshine rolled in, the track was in great shape. The weekend's first race was the 125cc A class. Local favorite Gene Stull put his Cernic's Suzuki up front early and tried to pull away. Stull, who is still recovering from 0 broken ankle, couldn't hold the pace for long, and Mills slipped into the lead on lap three. Things did not go so well for Gracyk, who crashed in the first tum and injured his hand. Incredibly, Gracyk tore through the pack and took second, but the hand injury would plague him throughout the weekend. Mills continued his mastery of the 125cc A class in the next two motos, and he did the deed again in the first mota of the 250cc A class. Mills was able to battle back from a bad start and secure the lead from Honda rider Danny Smith, who later fell to the attacks of Gracyk. Gracyk tried to catch Mills, but he was unable to shave more than a few seconds off of his lead. A crash would prevent a Mills repeat win in moto two, however, and Gracyk took advantage to snag the win. Smith won mota three, but Gracyk's consistency gave him the class overall. Gracyk was also the star of the 2500c Pro Sport class, as he gated well each time out and swept all three motos. Walker threw a wrench into the 125cc Pro Sport class, though, as he nailed the starts with his YZ250F and pulled away from the pack. Gracyk seemed to have a hook in Walker in moto one, but a small crash in the rutted corner near the finish ended his bid for the win. A similar story would play out between the two in motos two and three. "I push as hard as I can in the Pro Sport classes, and then try to take it easy in the Age classes," said Walker. "I think I have the speed to run with him, to said Gracyk. "I've just been making mistakes." Steel City USA Delmont, Pennsylvania Results• .June 8-9. 2002 125 A: 1. Ryan Mills (Han); 2.
