Cates placed third, and Cone turned up the wick for fourth. Levalley recovered in the second mota for fifth. Matt Goerke won the 85cc (14-15) class with two moto wins. Dustin Jensen finished second in the first mota, followed by Simon Usuga, Pedrero and Chase Abood. Ricky Renner. the winner of the 85cc (12-13) class, finished second both times out, and Jensen took third twice. Tyler Tiffany and Jimmy Warren each took a fourth and fifth in both motos. with Warren getting the tie breaker with fourth in the second mota. Kyle Goerke took two moto wins in the 65cc (7-9) class, as well as in the 65cc Open class. Michael Bange took second twice in the 65cc Open contest, and there was a fight for third overall. In the first moto, Cody Cleveland finished third, ahead of Johnnie Gargano and Derek Hall. In the second moto, Hall got the best of Cleveland and Gargano. In the first molo of the combined Four· Stroke and Over 35 contest, Charlie Walker grabbed the lead, followed by Darren McElhatten and Brook Thorpe. Thorpe went down on the first lap, holding up Drew Justice in fourth. Craig Johnson sneaked by both to move into third and the lead in the Over 35 class. Justice recovered to repass Johnson. The two four· stroke leaders slowly pulled away from the rest of the pack. Justice rode alone in third, as Corey Norvell and Kris Clark moved into the top five. In the second moto, Walker pulled another holeshot. McElhatten put the pressure on Walker and eventually got the lead. Thorpe played it safe this moto to capture third in the Four·Stroke class. Willis Brock beat out Justice in the Over 35 class to capture the overall. Tristan Foster put in two consistent rides in the 50cc Oil-Injected class with a 1-2 score to take the overall. Michael Miller won the second moto, but a fourth-place finish in the first mota relegated him to second overall. Cody Merrick, Chris Sullivan and Brinsley Dyess rounded out the top five. CMRC Harley-Davidson National Dirt Track Championships Round Z: Great Western Fairgrounds Evans Edges Springsteen Bv FRANK WOOD LONDON, ONTARIO, CANADA, JUNE 7 Chris Evans edged Jay Springsteen for the win in the 15-lap 750cc Expert final at the second round of the CMRC Harley-Davidson National Dirt Track Championships to keep himself in contention for the CMRC Canadian number·one plate. This splendid win would make up for his fourth-place finish at the opening round. For Springsteen, this was his second visit to the podium in as many starts. In the first round, Springsteen placed third, behind Steve Beattie and Dominic Beaulac. Springsteen led most of the race on this night, but Evans. riding Steve Beattie's XR750, followed within striking distance. On lap 13, Evans made a close but clean inside pass on Springsteen as the two race leaders slid into tum one. From there to the flag, it was Evans' race; his margin of victory was two bikelengths. Springsteen remained a close second but could not muster a pass. Beaulac fell slightly off the pace and settled for a safe and secure third place. Jeff Martorana, on the Leo H-D entry, ran in fourth place for the first 10 laps of the final and then Scott Sehl scooted by. Sehl held that spot for two laps, at which point Martorana returned the favor with a repass and towed Benoit Rouillard along with him. Sehl would have to settle for sixth. In the 600cc Expert final, Rouillard was fast man away at the start and held the lead for two laps. Jeff Martorana ran in second for the first lap, but as lap two went in the books, Beaulac had come up to speed, passed Martorana, and had Rouillard lined up. A perfect drive exiting tum two propelled Beaulac into the lead, and that was all there was to that, as Beaulac romped to a dominant win. Rouillard, meanwhile, bravely held on to second spot from lap three through lap eight. John Parker, former CMRC number-one plate holder, had rebounded from an uncharacteris· tically slow start and was hounding Rouillard's every move. Parker, on the Dr. Mark's/Gar· rTechrrhe Trailer Shop-backed Rotax, found a solution to Rouillard by the ninth lap and slid into second place, but that's as far as he would go, as by that point Beaulac was gone. For the second event in a row, the 505cc Expert class proved to be the most exciting of the evening. A full field of 11 riders lined up for the eight-lap final, with Douggie Lawrence the lone Canadian. MM Skidshoes/Old Dog Racing/Cycle World-backed Lawrence launched into a great start to lead lap one, but the pack was right with him. On lap two, Logan Myers took the point, with Lawrence second and Brandon Laursen third. Shawn Russell moved into third spot on lap three, and Nick Cummings stayed in his draft to move into fourth, the duo displacing Laursen to fifth. The race then became two races, as Lawrence hounded Myers for first and Cummings and Russell locked up in their own contest. Cummings got the better of Russell on the second-to-Iast lap to claim third for good, and Lawrence waited until the last lap to excite the crowd with a close pass and an exciting run to the flag. Lawrence was beaming after his second series win in a row. which gives him a healthy points lead in the championship standings. The 250cc Expert/Intermediate final was limited to only four laps, but it was four elec· trifying laps, as Kurt Biegger, Nick Cummings Devin Jessop and Donald Taylor locked up in a great battle. Jessop and Cummings were very close at the finish, with the nod going to Jessop. Taylor scored a splendid third place, and Biegger settled for fourth. Murray Morgan was first off the flag as the 600cc Intermediates started their eight-lap final. Morgan led the first lap, to the approval of the hometown crowd, but Scnny Martorana caught up to him as they started lap two and passed him on the back straight. From there on, it was a Martorana runaway, as no one could keep pace with the Quebec speedster. Morgan ran in second for the remainder of the race, while the battle for third between Sheena Morgan and Brad Hazel went the full race distance, with MotorSport Plus/Make It Roar's Morgan making a great move on the last lap to capture third. Penrod dominated the 125cc division. but in the 250cc division there were plenty of battles. Jacob Saylor of Middleboro, Kentucky, took his BSY/Fox/Dunlop-backed Yamaha to the win in the highly competitive 250cc B Modified division. Saylor was a front-runner in the 125cc B Stock and Modified divisions, sparring with eventual winner Nick Adams, but bike problems affected Saylor's finishes. Red Bud opened their facility on Friday, June 7. for open practice. It was a huge success, with more than 500 racers prepping for the upcoming three-moto format that would take place over the weekend. Racers came from all over the United States and even Canada to try to make it for the prestigious Loretta Lynn's Nationals. Tim Ritchie and his track crew worked hard all weekend, resulting in great, loamy race conditions. The track chopped up, making for a very rough and grooved Red Bud. Amy Ritchie-Phiffer kept the registration and scoring in check for a problem-free event, and the Red Bud staff did a great job of hosting the Regional. In the opening 125cc Pro Sport moto, John Penrod started at the front of the pack and was never challenged. Alabama's Chad Ward mounted a charge on his Shift/Twin Air/Dunlop-sponsored Yamaha, but Penrod would wick it up and pull away. Ohio's Chris Whitcraft was in the hunt, carding third in the opening moto. Suzuki jockey Billy Lichtle crashed out of the top five early in the mota in the Valley double-doubles. In the second moto, Penrod again ripped the holeshot, with Ward in tow. However, Ward went down in the heavily rutted sand switchback corners, remounting outside the top 10; he would charge back through the pack by moto's end to finish fourth. Lake Country / American Suzuki/Pro Action/DEP/ Torque Center's Brad Modjewski hounded Penrod on the opening laps, showing Penrod his yellow front fender. Nick Vaughn broke inside the top four on the third lap by passing both David Reed and Whitcraft in the heavily rutted corners prior to the LaRocco's Leap area. By the start of the fourth lap, Penrod had established a four· second lead over Modjewski, new third-spot man Vaughn, Whitcraft, and KTM-mounted Nate Larsen. Penrod cruised home for the win, Modjewski was second, and Whitcraft got by Vaughn for third just after LaRocco's Leap with an outside-berm-andhold-the-throttle-pinned type of pass. Ward recovered for fifth. Chad Ward got the third-moto holeshot over Penrod, Whitcraft, Larsen and Kyle Garro. Ward's lead was short-lived, though, as Penrod powered by going off the DGY Ski Jump. Ward stayed close throughout the moto, but Penrod had the field covered with smooth, fast, mistake·free riding. ''I've been training hard, prepping for this event - mountain·biking and riding three motos a day," Penrod commented. "I'm picking up the pace so I'm ready for the Red Bud n e VII" 55 JULY 10, 2002 79
