California Racing Club Ounestown Series Round 5: Los Angeles County Raceway Andrew Rhoads ran off with the 125cc Beginner win at CRC's Dunestown Gran Prix, the fifth round of the Dunestown Series. STORY AND PHOTOS BY GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE, CA, MAY 27 he fifth and final round of California Racing Club's J.B. Memorial Dunestown Series - the Dunestown Gran Prix, held at Los Angeles County Raceway in Palmdale - saw YZ125mounted Andrew Rhoads outrun his competition for the 125cc Beginnerclass win. When starter Ed Tripp waved his green flag to get the 45-minute race under way, Kaulin Boggio grabbed the early lead over Rhoads, Ariel Greer, Cody Maness and the rest of the field. Boggio used the top end of his YZ250F to full advantage on the pavement section of the layout to built a slight lead on Rhoads during the first couple of laps. Rhoads started to figure out places to make up time, and by the 20-minute mark of the race he had Boggio in his sights and was closing in. Rhoads chipped away at Boggio's lead at the rate of a couple of seconds per lap, and with about 15 minutes remaining he made the pass to run out front. Once in the lead, Rhoads put his Simi Cycle/NStyle/FMF/Renthal-sponsored Yamaha into overdrive and easily pulled away for a commanding victory. Maness kept inching his way toward the front and was able to get around Boggio to earn the second-place trophy. Brennan McGinnis also put in a good effort for the entire 45 minutes to slip past Boggio with time running out to finish in third place. Greer held on for fifth, behind Boggio, with Mike Garcia making it a Yamaha sweep of the top six positions. T 52 JUNE 26, 2002' cue I Kenny Kopecky led the 250cc Beginner class for nearly a lap on the extended course before Brett Palmer Jr. proved to be a little faster. Palmer's reign lasted for a couple of circuits before Joshua Hall overcame his fifth-place start to run out front. Hall would continue on uncontested on his CRF450R to collect tbe win, over Palmer. Kyle Frazier suffered a poor start but never gave up during his 45 minutes of track time and was rewarded with a third-place finish, ahead of Scott Cohen and Kopecky. KTM-mounted Mark Ohlgren picked up the Vet Beginner-class win, but not without a fight from Jeff Chaves. Ohlgren got around a fast-starting Daxten Dotson after a lap to lead the first 25 minutes before Chaves made it interesting. Chaves and Ohlgren went at it over the top spot, with Ohlgren prevailing in the end. Dotson ended up third, with Bob Woods and Jim Costa finishing in fourth and fifth, respectively. Gabi Abayov led the Vet Novices for about 15 minutes before Will Dickson reeled him in on his KTM 520 SX. Dickson made short work of Abayov and then proceeded to disappear with a healthy lead for the decisive win. Second place was all Abayov's at the line, with John Keefer battling back from a next-to-Iastplace start to claim third. Steve Nakamoto steadily worked his way _ Frank Costanzo took home the tlrst-place money In the Vet Pro and Old·nm.... Master A classes In Palmdale, California. n __ S up into a fourth-place finish, ahead of Steve Stearns and Shy Moshe. The Vet Intermediate class was a Joe Villegas affair, as the Yamaha pilot dominated the race right from the onset. Darren Stoffer would have to be content with a runner-up finish, ahead of Doug Ford and Mike Licitra. Frank Costanzo was equally impressive in the Vet Pro race, where he went wire to wire for the win on his JMG Motorsports/Air Masters-sponsored Honda. Rich Truchinski kept Costanzo in his sights for the entire 45 minutes to earn the second-place payback. Bill Sauro, who pulled off the track on the opening lap for minor adjustments, fought back from a half-lap deficit to earn third, over Robbie Dunham. Costanzo returned to cash in with the Old-Timers Master A-class victory as well. Bam Simons chased Costanzo throughout the race for a close second at the checkers. Third went to Leo Saul with John Ferro and Joe Root rounding out the top five. Adam Gragg finished off the series with a win in the 125cc Intermediate class, which locked up the series title in the process for the Factory Effects/Pit Pro-backed YZF rider. Garrett Eberle finished second on the day, with Ricky Parks, Chris Norr and Nathan Pamintuan filling in the top five finishing positions. CN Las Anlela c..my IlKewIlY ...1 ....., C.liflIm.
