CRA Parts Unlimited World Off-Road C'ship Amateur Series Round 4: Washougal Motocross Park STORY AND PHOTOS BY KIT PALMER WASHOUGAL, WA, JUNE 8-9 f it wasn't raining, it was sunny. If it wasn't sunny, it was raining. Okay, that might sound redundant, but that's exactly how it felt if you had attended Saturday and Sunday's Amateur racing program at Washougal MX Park for the fourth stop of the CRA Parts Unlimited World Off-Road Championship Series. But the onagain, off-again rain (mixed with the occasional sunshine) certainly didn't dampen the spirits of the more than 700 riders that turned out for a chance to compete on the famed National MX track and the many single-track trails that wind through the woods that surround Washougal's main facility. This year's WORCS event paid points to CRA (Cross Roads Adventures), NMA (Northwest Motorcycle Association) and aMRA (Oregon Motorcycle Racing Association, represented by the Northern Oregon Racing Association), and was co-hosted by CRA and the NMA/ Stumpjumpers Me. Rain on Friday night left the ground in ideal condition for Saturday's first race, the 45-minute Unclassified event, which attracted 108 entrants. While many riders chose to use this class as a practice run, many take it very seriously. One of those riders was Brian Sperle, who led from start to finish, topping his nearest competitor, Phil Stevens, by approximately a minute and a half. One of the closest battles of the day came in the Open Novice division, where James York nipped Jason Garat by just five seconds after one hour and 17 minutes of racing. The most heavily attended class was the combined Vet race, in which the Vet Over 30, Master Over 40, Senior Over 50, AA, Expert and Amateur riders, 157 in all, took to the track. This race featured a little bit of everything: rain, sunshine, megatraction, zero traction, and one of the largest bottlenecks ever seen in the state of Washington. Not far after the start, a couple of riders stumbled on a rather simple but rocky and slippery ascent in the dense woods, but that's all it took to create the back-up from hell. Some riders claimed they were trapped in the logjam for 15 minutes. "I was sitting on my bike, watch- I BrIan Sperle topped the 10B-rlder-strong Unclassified race. He also finished a hardeamed seventh in Sunday's Pro race In Washougal, Washington. ing, just up the trail from there," said CRA's Dave Hamel. "All of a sudden, they stopped coming by and it got real quiet. Then I heard the sound of revving bikes in the woods and thought, 'Uh oh.' I went to investigate and came up to the hill. .. 'Oh my God!' I got off my bike and started helping out. I would never have thought that little hill would've been a problem." Ty Davis was the overall winner of the race, topping Rodney Smith by 24 seconds. Jason Dahners won the Vet Over 30 Expert class, while Alan Deyo edged Jeff Johnson by 30 seconds to win the Master Over 40 Expert division_ The top Amateur rider was Vet Over 30-c1ass winner Ken Hough. The clouds opened up on the Four-Stroke and 125cc-c1ass riders, but that didn't bother overall and Four-Stroke AA winner Pat Garrahan and the runner-up, 125cc AA-c1ass winner Kurt Caselli. The top Expert rider was 125cc-c1ass winner Ryan Donogh, who finished third overall, while the best-placing Amateur rider was Four-Stroke winner Young Jacobsen. The sun popped out for the next and final race of the day, but it was too late to dry out the course. The Open and 250cc-c1ass riders had to endure thick and sticky mud, deep ruts, greasy-slick rocks, and tractionless hills, but that was just fine for many of the riders from the Northwest who thrive in conditions like these. Klade Glasgow ended up taking the overall and the 250cc AAclass win out of the 102 riders who started the race, and Sperle took The aocc class launches off the start line at the World Off-Road Championship Series round at Washougal Motocross Park. Fourth overall went to Open AA winner Erik Bee. The top Amateur rider was 250cc winner Mike Swisher, who finished 18th overall. Weather and track conditions could not have been any better for Sunday morning's Pee Wee, 60cc and 80cc races. The Mini racers competed on an abbreviated course, which kept a lot of the racing action close. Kyle Huffman topped the Pee Wee class, taking the checkered flag 34 seconds ahead of Killian Woder after the 30-minute race. Huffman also finished third overall among all of the 60cc racers. Filling out the Pee Wee podium in third was Thomas Pinheiro. Bryce Spring was the overall and 60cc-class winner, while Kyle and Alyssa Prince rounded out the top three. In the one-hour 80cc and Junior race, Justin Soule scored the overall and 80cc Expert-class win, while second overall went to 80cc Amateur winner Jamie Lanza.
