front, and he went off to the find the checkered flag. Boynton got the moto-two holeshot, with Carter and Piccirelli following. On the first lap, Mennenga passed all three to take the lead and immediately began to distance himself from the pack. Plumlee chased Carter for five laps before he was able to get a line around him for third, and then he began to reel in Boynton, but with only three laps left, there wasn't enough time or terra firma to make a move for second place. A 17-rider field of 125cc Beginners was led by Roger Pope. Randy Laird raced in second, followed by Chip Birchett and Dave Ohlinger. Ryan Chesney gated fifth but passed up through the pack on lap two to take the lead. Pope dropped back to third after pressure from Laird. On the next lap, Laird went down in the wooded section while Pope regained second, which he held to the finish. Eric Navarre finished third after starting sixth, followed by Daniel Huey, who had followed in Navarre's wake from the start of the race. Chesney took the win. Pope led the first lap in moto two, with Chesney at his back but taking the lead on lap two. Pope held tight to second, followed by Matt Unares and Navarre. Chesney's 1-1 tally was good for the overall win. Pope (2-2) was second, with Navarre (3-4) third. Taylor Painter grabbed the holeshot in the first 125cc Novice moto as the 23-rider field shot toward the first turn. Jarrod Doss gated second and held that position into lap two by fending off Josh Edwards and Ty Fletcher. Doss went down, giving second to Edwards. On lap three, Fletcher took over second when Edwards went down. Marshall Smith had a less-than-stellar start but battled his way through the pack to third by the end of lap four, where he finished. Justin Malcom took fourth, followed by Tripp Ashley and Jason Brunk. Smith got the second-moto holeshot, but Painter passed him shortly after the start. Then Smith retook it and led the race to the finish. Painter held second until the final lap before he fell in the back section; he resurfaced with the EMTs and a possibly broken wrist. Fletcher held third until Painter went down, giving Fletcher second, followed by Edwards, Brandon Jenkins and Malcom. Smith (3-1) took the overall win, with Fletcher (2-2) second and Malcom (4-5) third. The 85cc (12-13) and (14-16) riders lined the gate together, and Kyle Cunningham and Dennis Jonon provided a show for everyone. Both Team Green riders are recently returning off the injured reserve list. Jonon has been out since last sum- 78 JUNE 19. 2002' eye I e mer, having broken his femur at Ponca City, but both battled heartily from start to finish. Cunningham led the first moto, with Jonon as runnerup and Michael Pritchett third. Shea Fouchek raced in fourth but led the older 85cc (14-16) group, followed by fellow class rider Jake Miller. The second moto saw the class double-gated, with the older group leaving first, led by Fouchek, and the younger group led by Cunningham. Fouchek held off Miller for two laps before Miller took the lead. Fouchek kept close to Miller but was unable to retake the point. Cunningham led all four laps but was pushed by the speedy Jonon from start to finish. Pritchett once again raced in third, followed by Logan Melton and Preston Rigby from the first lap to the last. Minnesota State Supercross Series Round 1: Scott County Fairgrounds Dungey Dominates Jordan By GUY OHLAND JORDAN, MN. fIlAY 17 he opening round of the Minnesota State Supercross Series got under way Friday night at the Scott County Fairgrounds in Jordan, Minnesota. In its sixth year of operation, the Minnesota State Supercross championships have proved the place to be for a veritable hotbed of talented racers. This year, more than 150 riders and more than 800 spectators entered the gate at the season opener to discover a new track layout that included an over-under tunnel like those seen at the Metrodome and other EA Sports Supercross events. "We are able to take it [the tunnel] apart and move it to selected events throughout the year," said Lee Theis, owner of Motokazie.com. "Each year, we try and improve the show to keep it fresh and not be the same, old thing." With the tunnel, a great track, a great location, and the hottest-looking staff in the industry, supercross T n e _ s racing in Jordan definitely isn't going to get old soon. In the 80cc Senior class, Ryan Dungey of Chaska, Minnesota, launched his Joe Miller Homes/Ride Sports/Kali Construction CR80 Honda over the big grandstand triple (with the encouragement of his father, Troy, and the shattered nerves of his mother, Michelle) to become the first Mini pilot to clear the 70-foot jump_ Dungey went from holeshot to checkered flag, leading every lap. He would not be able to rest easy, as Ricky Vig of Shakopee, Minnesota, was at the top of his game and would keep the pressure on Dungey, waiting for him to make a mistake. That mistake never did occur, and Vig finished in the runner-up position in both the heat race and the main. The battle for the last podium spot unfolded behind the two speed demons up front, with Minnesota boys Nick Bedeaux of Farmington, Kevin Otte of Cannon Falls, and Clay Davis from Belle Plaine going at it, swapping positions and finally finishing both the heat and the main in that order. Dungey went on to educate the big boys in the 125cc B class, as the 12-year-old finished second on his Supermini to his older brother Jade, who won the main with convincing style. Cory Keeney from Oakdale, Minnesota, continued his dominance in the Pro class from last year, taking his Pro-Action of Minnesota/Cannon Powersports RM250 to the checkered flag uncontested. A pile-up at the start of the main left the rest of the pack battling for the runner-up spot. Clayton Carlson of New Prague ended up edging out Brett Ohland of Prior Lake, Minnesota, for second; Ohland laid down some fast laps to try to catch Carlson at the finish, but he ran out of time because the race had to be cut short due to the time of night. Promoter Lee Theis, who hails from Belle Plaine, put in an impressive ride to end up fourth. Rounding out the top five was Prior Lake native Austin Holm, who is a fixture at all the Motokazie events. "The track is great!" Keeney enthused. "That tunnel jump is really a cool deal!" Two past Minnesota State Motocross Champions were on hand, ready to get back in the mix. Jim Paul from Blaine, Minnesota, was the 1998 80cc (14-15) champ. "I decided to get back into racing after taking some time off," said Paul, who finished third in the 125cc B heat race, showing the speed of old, though a nagging pain in his shoulder forced him out of the main. The other "comeback kid" was Jake Gottas of Prior Lake. The past champion has spent the last two years recovering from shoulder and knee injuries. Gottas showed the speed that ranked him as one of the top Amateur riders in the nation. Unfortunately, though, the moto gods didn't smile on him quite yet, as he went down in the main after a good start and was able only to make it back up to sixth. In the "injured reserve" column was Jordan's own Mini pilot, Matt Wodtke. He jammed a wrist practicing on Tuesday but hopes to be back for the next event. Also missing was longtime supercrosser Tyler Neese of Madison Lake, Minnesota. "I broke my collarbone a month ago and hope to be back in two more weeks," Neese said. With summer coming and with it the warm weather, the crew at Motokazie will have their hands full, as the series will travel to 24 events all over the state!
