move on to a single main event. Poir~ts are
awarded three for first place, two for second,
one for third and zero for fourth.
After five rounds of qualifiers, Estelle
emerged as the clear leader, with 14 points,
dropping only one to Rafferty. Deim and Rafferty were tied at 13 points, and Rochester's
David Oakden was fourth with eight points.
The main was set, with no runoffs necessary.
When the riders were called to the line to
draw their starting position, Estelle drew the
pole position. Rafferty would start from two.
and Oakden from three, while Deim would
start his toughest race of the night from the
outside position.
When the tapes went up, it was Deim driving to the early lead from the outside, followed by Estelle and Oakden. Rafferty lifted
wildly out of two and struggled to maintain his
balance, but by the exit of tum two the youngster had regained control and pulled into sec·
and place. The chase was on. Rafferty continued to dog Deim, closing on the veteran lap
by lap. Just as it seemed the youngster had
closed to within striking distance on the third
lap, Rafferty hit a rut entering turn three, caus·
ing him to lift and drive toward Deim. Rafferty
had no choice but to wrestle his machine to
the dirt. Deim went on to take the win. Estelle
assumed second, Oakden was third, and
Rafferty remounted for last place.
In Division Two action, 16·year·old Brian
Hollenbeck from Owego took the win. Duane
Smith from Elbridge, New York, finished
second. Cassey Donholt from Chenango
Bridge was third, and Berkshire's David Clark
was fourth.

In the fast Schoolboy class, Matt Williams,
who just returned after a recent injury, took
the holeshot, and he and Jeremy Jacobs were
in a race by themselves, leaving the others
behind. They battied hard, and going into the
triple they were right by each other. Jacobs
started to get close to Williams in the ajr and
tried to back off, and he ended up letting go
of the bike and crashing hard. Williams went
on to win the Schoolboy class, and Justin
Thrift finished in second; Jacobs got a trip to
the hospital.
In the 85cc classes, Josh Thomas swept
the 85cc (12-13) class, over Forrest Seebeck,
and the Supermini class, over Jeremy Reid.
Reid took the first moto in the 85cc (14-15)
class, over Jonathan Balfour, but Balfour battled back in the second moto to take first
overall. Justin Coley took off in the 85cc
(7 - 1 1) class. Thomas Neuens worked past the
other two riders after a slow start to take a
distant second spot, followed by Glenn Balfour
in third and Wenk in fourth.
bikes with suspensions that are in dire need of
a dose of Viagra. It was no surprise, then, that
the quickest of the vintage bikes at the
AHRMA championship series weekend were
cutting lap times within a whisker of those of
the modem motocrossers who normally race
here.
"I was impressed." said track owner Rob
Preston.
At round six of AHRMA's Speed [, Sport
Vintage MX Series, some of the fastest Vintage
guys were on the track first, battling it out in
the Sportsman 250cc Expert class. It was a
throwback to 1974, especially on a nasty hill
called (With apologies to Led Zepplin) "Stairway to Heaven."
Tom Bellamy of Cincinnati got the win
aboard a 1974 Yamaha, followed closely by
Mark Mackay of Toledo on a '74 Honda Elsinore. Though Kevin Brown of Athens, Ohio,
settled for third in the first mota, he came
roaring back to win the second race aboard
his immaculate '74 Penton. Though Bellamy
couldn't get past the flying Penton, he got the
overall win based on his 1-2 finishes.
Another tight battle was waged in the Over
50 Intermediate class. Yes, that means the riders were all over 50 years old. Mota one saw
Donald Riley of Athens, Ohio, take the win on
a '72 Bultaco, followed closely by Joe Lennert
of Apex, North Carolina, on a '74 Yamaha,
and Ray Rondinella of Kingston, Pennsylvania,
on a '74 Penton. But Lennert got revenge in
the second race, followed by Rondinella and
Fred Lasseter of Kingwood, Texas, on a '74
Husky. The overall win went to Lennert, followed by Rondinella and Riley.
In a battle between Really Old Bikes
(ROBs), Brian O'Connor of Leesburg, Virginia,
on a '62 Ducati 250, got the overall win in
Premier Lightweight Expert competition. edging Dave Boydstun of Mesa. Arizona, aboard a
'65 Cotton. Boydstun is AHRMA's off-road
coordinator.
Sunday saw some equally tight racing in
AHRMA's Post-Vintage competition, a series
for bikes that were built between 1975 and
1983.
In a dogfight between Maicos, Benny Durrough of Union City, Georgia, got the overall
win over Tom Shaefer of Cranbury, New Jersey, in the GP 500cc Expert class.
Elsewhere on the premises, the go· slow
guys were battling it out in an Observed Trials
competition. Low score of the day went to
Stan Bollinger of Westminster, Maryland,
aboard his hardtail, Hodaka-powered GRM.
Bollinger dropped just four points in four
rounds of trials competition.
All three events were sponsored by
the American Historic Motorcycle Racing
Association.

McGrath Mauls REM
Saturday MX
By ROCKY HASH

SAN BERNARDINO, CA, MAY 25
A rather large turnout of racers got a special
treat on Memorial Day Weekend, as they got
to not only ride on a cool track, but they also
got to check out the AMA's winningest
motocross rider, Jeremy McGrath. McGrath
turns up at a few Racing Enterprises Motor·
sports events every year, and in his first ride
since Las Vegas, he handily won both motos
of 250cc/Vet Pro competition.
In the first moto, McGrath shot his Bud
Light/Bell Helmets/Bridgestone/Thor-AST/
Spy Yamaha YZ250 out front for the holeshot.
Fresh off some solid arenacross results, "Factory" Phil Lawrence gave chase, with Larry
Brooks right behind him. Willy Musgrave and
Mike Koncur filled out the top five positions.
McGrath was able to open a 10-second gap by
halfway, but as the 20-minute contest wore
on, he picked up his speed. With lap times
that were three and four seconds faster in the
second half of the race, McGrath easily distanced himself from the pack and won the
mota
going
away.
Lawrence
held
second until he slid out in a corner, allOWing
Brooks and Musgrave by and dropping him
to fourth.
In moto two. McGrath ripped another
holeshot. Musgrave tucked in behind him, with
Lawrence and Brooks right behind him.
Lawrence went around Musgrave and set out
after McGrath on the first lap. Though
Lawrence managed to keep McGrath in sight
for a few laps, once again "Mac" turned up the
wick as the race wore on, and soon he was
way out front, putting on a riding clinic.
McGrath charged hard all the way to the
checkers for another mota win to complete his
perfect day. Lawrence (4-2) finished up in
second place, while Musgrave (3-3) put in a
couple of excellent motos for third overall and
first Vet.
The 125cc Pro class was also an interesting affair, as brand-new Shark Plano Honda
rider David Pingree showed up to get a bit of
time in on his fresh ride. Pingree was going
really fast and looked to be right at home
on the red machine as he went on to win
both motos comfortably. Hinson/White Brothers/O'Neal rider Paul Kellen piloted his
YZ250F to a pair of fine second-place finishes,
which was good for second overall. Nate Haw~
ley, Joe Hargett and Mark Brooks argued over

By MARK NEUENS
BURNSVILLE, NC, MAY 25
After a week of no rain, gallons of water from
the water truck still left Foggy Bottom Raceway dry. Dust and soft turns were the order of
the weekend. Mark Wagner went out for practice and took a fall, but he still went on to
sweep the 250cc and 125cc A classes, over
Brandon Langdon. Wagner would also take
the Over 25 A victory, over Andy Mitchell.
In 65cc action, Justin Coley took the
holes hot and the lead in the 65cc (10-11)
class, over William Wenk. Nick Poole took the
first position in the 65cc (7-9) class, followed
by Josh Savage. There was some position
changing among the third through fifth spots,
but in the end Matthew Ritch took third,
Codey Kosut took fourth and Gary Christian
