Round &: Frozen Ocean Motocross Parle Miller, Stratton Thaw Out Frozen Ocean Bv LARRV WOOSTER AUBURN, NY, MAY 19 ound six of the Western New York Motocross Association's 30-race series got under way at Frozen Ocean Motocross Park. Many New York regulars were joined by riders from as far away as New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and of course our Canadian friends migrated south for the festivities. With the occasional snow flurries and the cold temperatures forecast for race day following a week that saw 5 inches of rain at the track, 320 WNYMA riders were still ready, able and more than willing to compete. Making a return appearance was one of the top 100 AMA National MX riders, Bruce Stratton. The Palmyra Racing Association-sponsored Stratton just returned this week from competition in California. Also making his first WNYMA start of the season (after recovering from breaking two bones in his leg in the middle of the 2001 season) was Bart Lucas. The question in the 125cc Amateur class was, Who would be the fastest the longest under these cold and muddy conditions? When the gate dropped for moto one, four very fast riders battled for the holeshot, as Honda rider T.J. Bell and Yamaha riders Shawn Wozniak, Caleb Miller and Matt Eastman all squeezed through turn one at the same time. Each rider made his line choice coming out of the holeshot and nailed the gas, and they raced four wide into turn two_ They stayed bar to bar to bar to bar through that turn and up and over the big tabletop jump, to the crowd's cheers. When Eastman got his front tire stuck in a rut in the corner and stalled his Yamaha right after the tabletop jump, Bell, Wozniak and Miller all made the pass and stayed on the gas. On lap two, Miller was up front. Thomas Addy powered his Honda into second from a fifth- or sixth· place start soon after Wozniak and Bell made some mistakes on the back section of the track. While Miller dominated the class by more than 15 seconds, Eastman continued to battle back from his lap-one miscue, R passing several riders while gammg on the leaders. Jason Doyle had the stamina to pick up the pace on his Yamaha, moving into third, ahead of Allen Robinson's late charge, as well as Eastman. This made everyone aware that if Eastman, Doyle or Robinson didn't make any mistakes in moto two and Miller stayed up front and upright, they all would have a great battle in moto two. Sure enough, Eastman took the holes hot, with Doyle and Miller in close pursuit. These three riders were lucky enough to get through turn two before the rest of the rider's lines all converged, with nobody yielding way. This started a six- to eight-motorcycle yard sale, including those of several top competitors. Miller continued to rail on the outside lines of the corners while Eastman kept running the slower yet sometimes quicker inside line. This propelled Miller to the lead, posting lap times consistently in the 2:23-to-2:26 range, as Eastman slowed his lap times down into the 2:28-to-2:30 bracket. Doyle fell victim to a back-track mishap that left him explaining the poor-han- dling front end of his bike to his mechanic/pit board person before continuing on. Miller and Eastman checked out into a new area code, partially due to the lap-one pile-up_ Miller took first overall on the day by being consistently fast and staying upright. Eastman took second overall with his determination and by making only one mistake all day. Stratton's return visit to the series sure didn't go unnoticed by his fellow Expert riders. Stratton powered his Yamahas to wins in an incredible seven out of the eight motos in which he competed. Winning both motos in the 125cc Expert, Vet, and Over 25 A classes, as well as finishing second in moto one and first in "moto two in the Open Expert class, earned Stratton four first-overall finishes on the day. Only Mike Leavitt was able to best Stratton in one of the Open Expertclass motos, while the usual list of Expert-class dominators - Bill Silo varole, Aaron Dieter, Don Schmidt and Corey Kandefer - got dominated. Stratton took time to talk to old friends and old rivals, and he made some new friends and rivals on his way to total Frozen Ocean dominance. Frozen Ocean Motocross Park hosted a great weekend of racing competition packed full of various styles of action, from Friday night kart action on the circle track and stadiumcross competition on the supercross-style track under the lights on a cold Saturday night to the WNYMA points race on Sunday. The next WNYMA race at the top-notch Auburn, New York, track will be on June 16, for the Dunlop Day/7S Racing-sponsored event. eN 50 P/W (4-8): I. Br.tt McMicha.1 (Vam); 2. Connor Kelly (YZlm); 3.
