Oklahoma State Championship Series
Round 8: Ponca City

CONNIE JOHNSON
PONCA CITY, OK, MAY 19
effrey Simon raced to his fourth
win in a row at round eight of the
Oklahoma State Championship
Series in Ponca City. Now Simon sits
atop the points standings in the
Vintage class.
In moto one of the Vintage class,
Austin Goodwin got the holeshot, but
he was quickly relegated to fourth
when Simon, Duane Goodwin and
Odee Bundrick Jr. all got by him on
lap one. After some bar-to-bar action
between Duane and Bundrick, Duane
finished second, followed by Bundrick., Austin and Lenny Roberts. All
nine entries in the Vintage class were
aboard Yamahas.
Simon nabbed the holeshot in
moto two and took it all the way to
the checkers. Bundrick held on to
second for two laps before Duane
stole it away. Austin rode to another
fourth-place finish, while Ryan Doner
passed Roberts on lap two to take
over fifth.
Robbie Smith nailed the holeshot
in the first 125cc Intermediate mota
on his YZ250F. Gating second was
Yamaha-mounted Wes Parr, but he
was overtaken rather quickly by
Kawasaki jockey Thomas Hahn, who

then was on the move when a crash
on the tunnel slowed him down. He
charged again but then lost his
silencer and crashed again in the
same spot. Parr crashed in the back
section of the track and retired for the
day. Honda rider Ben Schrik took
advantage of these mishaps and
claimed second. Hahn limped across
the finish in third. Ian Parker and
Josh Johnson rounded out the top
five, both aboard Yamahas.
Smith got the holeshot again in
moto two, but Hahn kept his bike on
two wheels and passed him for first
on the first lap. Smith stayed in second, with Parker hanging on to third.
Schrik came from behind to finish
fourth, but the Hard Charger award
goes to fifth-place finisher Johnson,
who came off the gate and around the
first turn in a battle for second with
Hahn. A crash on the back section of
the track dropped him to 12th, but he
charged through the pack to a
respectable fifth-place finish.
Getting the holeshot in mota one
of the 125cc Novice class was KTM
pilot Jon Paul Powell. By the end of
lap one, Curtis Peterson had put his
Yamaha into first, with another Yamaha rider, Robbie Robertson, all over
his back fender. Apparently the pressure was too much, because when
they came around at the end of lap
three, Peterson had dropped to fifth
and Robertson was out in front all
alone. Ryan Voit had a good ride on
his Suzuki, finishing second, with
Powell, Yamaha rider Trey Terbush,
and Peterson filling out the top five.
Robertson took no chances in
moto two. He got out in front right off
the gate and never looked back. Voit
came from an eighth-place start to
finish second, with Yamaha-mounted
Craig Royse third. Yamaha rider Kyle
McCoy and Suzuki jockey Garrett
Teasley followed Royse across
the finish.
Jacob Leatherwood and Cory
Green both shot out of the gate in the
first 80cc Open moto, with Green getting in front by the first turn. Green,
on a Suzuki, stayed in front of the
Yamaha-mounted Leatherwood for
most of three laps. Leatherwood got
out in front by outjumping Green on
the jump before the finish line, but
less than a lap later Kawasaki jockey
Dennis Jonon flew by Green and

Leatherwood to take over the lead.
Another Kawasaki pilot, Wil Hahn,
followed Jonon and passed Green for
third but couldn't get by Leatherwood. Yamaha rider Nathan Cox
came in fifth, behind Green.
Jonon didn't waste any time
in moto two, getting out in front
early and staying there until the
checkers flew. Hahn also had a better
moto: He gated second and chased
Jonon to the finish line, with
Green not far behind. Cox came in
fourth, with Kawasaki jockey Devin
Blackburn fifth.
In the 65cc Open class, there was
quite a battle for first between
Kawasaki-mounted Terren O'Dell and
KTM rider Chris Thies. In moto one,
O'Dell got the holeshot and hung on
to the lead by a knobby as he crossed
the finish line with Thies. Justin Berry
put in a good ride, coming in third on
his Kawasaki, with Jesse Braden,
also on a Kawasaki, and Skylar
Teague, on a KTM, rounding out the
top five.
Thies got the jump in moto two,
followed by O'Dell. Berry managed
another third-place finish, while
Teague moved up to fourth.
Cheyenne Nichols put his KTM into
fifth. Braden charged hard on lap two
and, after passing Teague, crashed
hard as he tried to navigate the braking bumps on the back straight, leaving him with a DNF for the moto.
With only two rounds left, the race
for points is critical. The Series winners will be determined at Cooperland
Raceway on July 28.
