Halbert in turns three and four to take the
lead, which he held for the rest of the race.
Halbert held second, while Scooter Vernon
and Ragsdale had a good battle for third,
swapping positions back and forth. At the
checkers, it was Scooter Vemon third, Ragsdale fourth, Derek Oquist fifth and Dave
they reversed finishing positions in the Scratch
main.
The first Scratch semi had Brant on the
pole, with Larsen in two and Bobby Krips and
Ed Castro in three and four. The gate went to
Brant but Larsen was riding double with him
and they went one-two in the quick four-Iapper. They were headed for the main; Castro
and Krips headed for the Consi.
The second semi had Bobby Schwartz on
the pole, with Randy DiFrancesco in two and
Gary Hicks and Shawn McConnell in three and
four. The gate went to Schwartz, but Hicks
that tumed the heat up and had a slight edge
Kohlstaedt in sixth. There were four riders who
didn't finish the main: Dick Wall pulled off;
Jeff Annen didn't show; and Joe Russel and
Sam Halbert were in a horrific crash coming
off of turn two in a heat race, and though both
riders eventually got up, neither raced again
for the night. It was Christian's first Expert win.
In the Open class, Oquist got the holeshot
and left Gary Moore and Dave Kohlstaedt to
do battie behind him. Moore led Kohlstaedt for
about half the race, but finally Kohlstaedt got
as they completed lap one. from there on out
it was all Hicks. Schwartz was second.
McConnell and DiFrancesco would meet again
in the Cansi.
Krips drew the pole for the Consi main,
around him to take second.
with DiFrancesco in two and Castro and
McConnell in three and four. DiFrancesco cut
a perfect gate and went out first. Castro got
out in the dirt and had the lead by the time
they came around. With each lap, that lead
got bigger. McConnell twisted his knee in turn
one and was pretty much out of it.
DiFrancesco was battling bike problems and
he was never a serious threat. Krips was trying
to run with Castro but was using the same line
and couldn't make up ground. It was an
impressive win for Castro.
In the Scratch main, Hicks was on the
pole. Schwartz was in two, with Larsen and
Brant in three and four. Hicks was on a borrowed bike, which is becoming habit with him,
as he runs hard. He got the gate, but Larsen
made the coolest move out of tum four. Hicks
got high and Larsen managed to slingshot
under him for the lead. Hicks hung on to second for one more lap before Brant got by and
went after Larsen. With two laps to go, it was a
dogfight between Larsen and Brant. Though
Brant tried to get by on the inside, Larsen shut
the door and took the checkers. Schwartz was
third. Hicks, with a flat tire, got fourth.
In the Handicap main, Bobby Krips was on
the 20, DiFrancesco was on the 30, and Castro, Brant, Hicks and Larsen shared the 50.
When the tapes came up, Brant missiled
through traffic and was third after the first lap
second by lap two and in the lead by lap
three. Larsen gave chase, but nobody was
going to catch Brant. Hicks was third, Castro
fourth and DiFrancesco fifth. Krips' motor
went away and he was not a happy camper.
