Cycle Junction Pro-Am Amelia Motor Raceway Nickens Outrides Out-of-Towners By MICHELLE MAY CHIMENTO AMEUA, VA, MAY 18 fter winning the qualifier, Virginia's own Haden Avery went on to win the first race of the Cycle Junction Pro-Am, the 60-65cc contest. Tyler Martin, who finished the heat second, fell out of the race on the sixth lap. Second place went to Hunter Coates. Avery then moved to the 85cc (7 -11) class to take the win from Joshua Langreck, who finished second, just ahead of Coates. Riders from the north and south battled in the 250cc Expert class, and Wesley Kite of Virginia finally outrode New Jersey's Jim Owens to the finish line. In the 250cc Amateur division, Ryan Martin raced Wayne Eckert and Mickey Cary to first place. Eckert and Cary finished second and third, respectively. The 100cc riders had the crowd on its feet as Tim Clary and Matthew Koontz appeared to rub ankles on every lap, while Steven Atkinson waited on the inside in third place for Clary or Koontz to make a mistake and provide him with an. opportunity to pass them both. Koontz never checked up and after Clary led for 10 laps, Koontz passed for the win, Atkinson moved into second, and Clary finished third. "Tadpole" Pulliam of Georgia won his Open Amateur heat but was passed at the start/finish line on the third lap of the feature by Ohio's Ricky Marshall. Then Marshall held A 64 JUNE 12, 2002' cue • e Pulliam at bay, placing a lapped rider between them before taking the checkered flag. Pulliam finished second, just ahead of Ryan Martin. Vernon Caldwell started on the second row in the Sportsman class and somehow used his position to get a great start. He led the first lap and every lap thereafter. Barry Ragland kept breathing down his neck, but he was never able to pass Caldwell on the inside or the outside. Ragland finished second, just ahead of New Jersey's Tom Norton. The $3000 purse in the Open Expert class brought riders from seven states to the clay oval in Amelia. It even got Joe Perdue, who rode for Eddie Boomhower, back in the saddle. Perdue hasn't raced since 1987 at the Virginia Fairgrounds. He finished the heat third, ran the semi and finished seventh, not making the main. Everyone was still glad to see Perdue back on track. The times of the first three heats were milliseconds apart. Virginia's John Nickens led the fastest group with a time of 1 :55:06. Pennsylvania's Rick Winsett Jr. finished his heat race just .07 seconds behind Nickens', and Jake Johnson of New Jersey was third, only 0.71 seconds off of Winsett's time. The fourth heat was still close, with a time of 1:57:29. The first- and second-place finishers of each heat moved to the main, and two semis gave the rest of the riders one last chance. This brought Tim Eades, Mike Hacker (who had a neVIl's mechanical breakdown in the heat), Noot Irvin and Robert Lewis into the field of competition. Nickens started the race low on the inside and had a good start, leading laps one, two and three. Jake Johnson slid past Nickens on the fourth lap, and the two fought for position while Lewis experienced mechanical difficulty and left the track. Only two laps later, while in the lead, Johnson's engine blew and Nickens shot to first place with dollar signs in his eyes. Donald Mullen of Pennsylvania raced second and set his sights on Nickens. After chasing Nickens for 15 laps, Mullen was passed on the outside by Mike Hacker, who had worked his way up from sixth place earlier in the race. Nickens kept a strong lead, lapping riders Irvin and Timmy Mitchell on the 16th lap and keeping them between himself and Hacker. With only five laps to the checkered flag, Mullen had trouble and left the race, giving up the thirdplace position to Joe Eades. Eades tailed Hacker, with Winsett, another Pennsylvanian, at his side. Nickens had a strong lead on Hacker, and the closest race was between Eades and Winsett. On the white-flag lap, Winsett slid past Eades and took the checkered flag third. Hacker finished second, and Nickens won at his hometown track. After waving the American flag around the quartermile clay oval for his victory lap, Nickens collected his winnings. AHRMAlNorthwest Maico & CZ National Post-Vintage MX Series Great Lakes Post-Vintage Regional Series Round 4/1: Lincoln Trail Motosports Park Casey Hosts AHRMA p- V National MX By RON WINGET CASEY, lL, MAY 18 ith water in the farm fields, the Mississippi River above flood stage, and rain in the forecast, apprehension ran high as the long-awaited Casey Vintage weekend approached. Lincoln Trail Motosports promoter Jean Ramsay and his crew hosted a three-event AHRMA National weekend on May 18 and 19. The first event of the weekend would be round four of the Northwest Maico & CZ National Post-Vintage MX Series. This was also round one of the Great Lakes Post-Vintage Regional Series, and 88 enthusiastic riders showed - double the turnout of last year - to find Lincoln Trail's modern motocross course had been modified slightly to accommodate these evolutionary Post-Vintage machines. AHRMA's Post-Vintage classes are divided into three eras: Historic, Gran' Prix, and Ultima. The Historic era is intended to represent the "first generation" of long-travel bikes that were commercially available in the 197577 period. No water-cooling is allowed and suspension is limited to 9 inches front and rear. The Historic 500cc classes included a diverse mix of riders from areas as far away as W Arizona and Ontario. Historic 500cc Expert rider Ted Mink won out over his rival, Penton pilot Chris Richardson, and third-placed Rick Hudson. In the second moto, Hudson was seen pushing his disabled Maico through the infield, lamenting, "It just quit running with me in the lead!" Close racing was also apparent in the Historic 500cc Intermediate class between Husqvama-mounted Edward Maglasang, Maico rider Bob Geekie, and Honda pilot Joseph Kelly, and they finished in that order. Historic 125cc Expert rider and 2001 National Champion Patrick O'Connor, aboard a fresh YZ Yamaha, led from flag to flag in both motos, but behind him riders changed positions several times, with Elsinore rider Charles Stevenson ultimately earning a second-place award. The Gran Prix era is intended to represent the "second generation" long-travel motorcycles generally available between 1977 and 1981. There are no suspension-travel limitations, although linkage-type rear suspension is not permitted, nor is water-cooling, nor are disc brakes. In the Gran Prix 500cc Expert class, the first- and second-place finishers both rode Maicos, with Robert Pistole triumphing over Benny Durrough. The
