AHRMAlSpeed & Sport National Vintage Trials Series Round 8: Lincoln Trail Motosports Park Section 81 You Gotta Be Crazy! Bv the low score for the meet. Bruce was seconded by his brother Joe Clegg, also aboard a Greeves, and Ed Logan followed in third aboard his BSA. Watching Logan ride with a knee-high cast on his left leg made one wonder what he could have achieved in full health. Novice rider Randall Witt took his Greeves to first over Triumph rider Larry Williamson, with another Triumph pilot, Ken Bales, in third. "Smilie" Jim Cameron competed in this class as well. At 78 years young, Smilie was the oldest competitor. The Modern Classic classes include vintage trials bikes up to and including 1979 models, and these are AHRMA's most active classes. Riding the most difficult number-one line, Yamaha-mounted Keith Dunlop scored in the 50s, but well ahead of second-placed, Yamaha-mounted Chris Eddy and third-placed, Hondamounted Rick Shaw. Intermediate rider James Smith finished his class with low score, earned first place for the day, and took over the National Series lead. He was followed in the Intermediate class by Robert Lord in second and Tony Kirk in third, both aboard Yamahas. Bruce Gibbar took fourth and Michael McPeters took fifth, even after having a hole RON WINGET CASEY,IL, MAY 18 he second event of a big threeevent Vintage weekend at Lincoln Trail Motosports Park in Casey, Illinois, was round eight of the AHRMA Speed & Sport National Vintage Trials Series. Illinois is not known for radical topography, but Lincoln Trail is blessed with a stream called Range Creek that winds through the park, and its drainage system has created some very challenging trials terrain. After having rained several inches the week before the event, conditions were very tough. As a matter of fact, section eight, a muddy uphill torture, was all but impassable except to the truly gifted. nOh, just give me my five and quit laughing," was a refrain heard often at the section's exit gate. The Premier Lightweight classes were dominated by British-built Triumphs, BSAs and Greeves. Graham Foster joined his fellow Tennessee competitors in the Expert class, but he could not break into the first- and second-place positions of rivals Bob Ginder and Mike Parsley. In the Intermediate class, first-place finisher Bruce Clegg and his Greeves were the combination to beat, with T Lincoln Trail Motosports Park: Kevin Kline (761) and Kim Armstrong (51j) lead the Over 40 Intermediate class Into the first tum at the AHRMA National Post-Vintage MX In Casey, Illinois. Can-Am of Bill Fillion was third. Gran Prix 500cc Intermediate Yamaha rider Scott Van Meter led both motos, with Stan Newton in close pursuit on a Husqvarna. Behind them was New Yorker Alex Moroz, Canadian Ron Harten, and local Missourian Ed Gaines, and they finished in that order. Gran Prix 250cc Novice entries shuffled positions several times in both motos, with KTM-mounted Rik Smits, of recent Indiana Pacers fame, earning the overall win ahead of second-placed racer John Van Meter and third-placed Bultaco rider Mitch Winder (Great Lakes Post-Vintage coordinator) taking third. Gran Prix 250cc Intermediate rider Ben Wanke brought his Suzuki down from White Lake, Michigan, and trounced second-placed Don Matthews and thirdplaced Richard Anderson. The Ultima classes are for machines that bring us to the brink of the modern era. Water-cooling and linkage-type rear suspension are allowed, but no disk brakes or power valves are eligible. Ultima 500cc Intermediate rider Fred Lasseter and his Honda took second place in the first moto but ultimately earned the overall win after the Suzuki of firstmota winner Oscar Gaeton did not finish the second mota. Ultima 250cc Intermediate rider John Munich of Chesterfield, Missouri, managed to keep his Honda well ahead of Tyler Popp's Suzuki, earning a first-place award for the day. With track conditions better than expected and a Post-Vintage turnout that surpassed expectations, the day went off without a hitch. The efforts of the generous volunteers and staff of Lincoln Trail - Dal Smilie, Sy McElvain, Jean and Sandi Ramsay, Loni Glidewell, Chris Makynen, Kay McCullough, Irene Smith, Craig Campbell, Brian Maraskine, James and Lorie Smith, Dave Boydstun, Jennifer McElvain, Shari Cholar, Tom Holscher, and Nadine Darling - are much appreciated.
