motorcycles during practice and heat-race action, and in one of his violent sideways pitches into the first corner he had lost both of his contact lens. When the final staged for this class, Horton ducked under the powerful Triumph of Robert Scally and led down the back stretch on lap one. He was never headed. Scally kept close but could not make the pass; he finished second. Third place went to Dan Phillips, and fourth came Lacey's way. After each final, the riders earning trophies were interviewed, and those with sponsors mentioned them; most thanked the enthusiastic fans for coming to the event, as the crowd really got into the action. Horton quipped that his victory in this class was a welcome event, as he is still recovering from serious injury last season. The racing activity was capped by a full grid of Professional-class riders, and it was noted that the hosts, the Salinas Ramblers Motorcycle Club, had selected both the Hospice Foundation of the Central Coast and the famed Clayton Foundation for injured motorcycle racers as recipients of the proceeds from this year's Ricky Graham Memorial. In attendance were Ricky's parents, Mr. Bill Graham and Mrs. Barbara Homen. Fifteen laps were allotted for the 14 riders slated to come to the line in the Pro class. Heat-race winners Rod Spencer and Randy Bereman were the first to pick their starting positions, and there were two full rows when the green flag waved. First-corner action was fierce, but everyone made it through and there was passing going on everywhere. Rotax rider Frank Garcia had a good rhythm going and was picking off riders every other lap. Bereman worked his Rotax into the lead and held it for nearly half the race, but coming steadily forward to challenge him was Spencer. A red flag for a multi-rider, midpack pile-up in turn four was necessary, and a single-file restart was employed. Though the race went full distance, another crash on the back stretch brought out the checkers and red flags together. Spencer led Randy Bereman to the line by a narrow margin, while Garcia came home third. Fourth place went to Paul Herman, on a Yamaha, and fifth was captured by Anthony Giammanco, on another Rotax. eN Salinas Velley Feirgrounds King City, California Results: May 17, 2002 MOD P/W so NOV: 1. Northern Cup Motocross series Round 1: Gravity Park MX Grube Grabs Gravity Gold By PETE EMME CHILTON, WI, MAY 18 G ravity Park - which track owner Scott Biese bills as "Wisconsin's More than 400 eager motocrossers took to the grounds to contend for top honors in the Northern Cup Series. Despite temperatures in the Extreme Sports Headquarters" - low 30s for the opening set of motos, the action was hot. Nearly a full gate opened for business on May 17 with the Amateur Stadiumcross Champi- of Sportsmen riders, ranging in age from 16 to 24, scurried down the onships. Biese partnered with Bob short straight into the tight right-hand Schneider to create one of the finest racing facilities, with endless possibil- first corner. Todd Grube, Friday night's 125B main winner, captured ities for extreme racing. Gravity Park the holeshot, with Michael Fager will host Friday night racing as well close behind. The top contender in as four Northern Cup Motocross Series rounds throughout the 2002 the class, Mark Schick, hit the ground hard in the first-turn melee; he racing season. returned to the pits and retired. Matt Gravity Park MX: Jason Mathie leads the way In the second Sportsman moto en route to the overall victory at the opening round of the Northern Cup Motocross Series in Chilton, Wisconsin. Mraz, another front-runner, was involved in the pileup. Grube gained a little ground on second place until Cory Smidel dived to the inside in the whoops to overtake second from Fager on lap two. Fager got him back shortly after. Jake LaCount was on a mission, trying to crack the top three, but the track came up and bit him in the whoops on the outside, sending the Kawasaki rider to the floor; LaCount was out of contention. Fager was disqualified a lap later when he doubled on the red-cross flag. Smidel assumed the vacant position but ran out of real estate trying to catch the leader. Jason Mathie moved into third by the end of the moto by riding patiently through the field. Cory Augustine took fourth. Grube held on to the lead and took the win in the very competitive field of 33 riders. Mathie took the lead early in the second moto, while Grube grabbed second. Jake Dobbratz moved into third, chased by Smidel. Then Smidel moved past Dobbratz on the fourth lap, and Yamaha rider Craig Wallace switched positions with Dobbratz for fourth. Wallace was on the move, pulling alongside Smidel on the last lap, but Smidel held his line in the last corner to save third. Mathie got the win but not the overall with his 3- 1 scores. Grube, with good starts and his 1-2 scores, took the top spot on the podium. Mathie was second overall, and Smidel took third. When the gate dropped for the 125cc A contest, Suzuki jockeys Brad Modjewski and Matthew Maier were up front, but Maier held on longer through the first double to take cue I _ the lead. Modjewski pounded the whoops hard to move ahead of Maier for the lead, and a newcomer to the A class, Tyler Smulders, followed suit. Smulders had won the 125cc A and 250cc A classes the night before, and he had a fistful of confidence heading into the first NCS race. After the first lap, Modjewski, Smulders, Maier and Karter Busse were contending for the lead. Modjewski began to pull Smulders on the straights, extending his lead by three seconds. Smulders was smothered by the whoops on lap three and was left dazed while trying to remount; he rejoined the action one lap down, as Modjewski lapped the Honda rider. Modjewski checked out with the win, followed closely by Maier. Busse took the surprising win away from Modjewski in the second moto, beating out a rejuvenated Smulders. Modjewski took third and second overall, behind Busse (3-1). Smulders went 6-2 for third. Several riders posted double-moto wins on the day - a feat that's hard to accomplish, considering the amount of riders on the line and the track conditions. Kimberly Wilcheck ran to two moto wins in the Women's class. Christopher Benavides did likewise in Pee Wee Junior competition. Nathan LaPorte rocked the Pee Wee Senior class with two aces. Travis Frassetto completely dominated the Mini 65cc and Mini Junior 80cc divisions with four aces; the kid can ride his tail off. Brian Collins took home the gold in the Mini Senior 80cc class. Brian Jochman rode his Suzuki to moto wins in Vet Over 30 B competition. The 2001 District 16 points champ in n _ _ s • JUNE 12, 2002 63
