event rolled around, however, as he
led the pack home with an easy win,
followed by Gill and Spezzano.
As Jase Lewis was dominating the
older 80cc division, the younger riders put on a great show in their
group. Georgia's Arthur Cofield came
back from a dismal sixth-place qualifying finish to take top honors in the
80cc (7-11) group. Cofield had his
hands full in both the qualifier and
main event, holding off the charges of
Florida's Patrick Buell, who took the
qualifier win, and fellow KX rider
Gage Hartman. Both riders headed
Cofield at some point, but when it
counted, Cofield put his CR out front.
Impressive as well was Georgia's
Justin Applewhite. The CR rider was
on fire as he topped the 250cc B
class and the Four-Stroke class, and
he appeared to be a shoo-in to take
the 125cc B class, but he went down
near the end of the combined AlB
moto, handing the win to Florida's
Cole Boutwell. Georgia's Michael
Graham, meanwhile, took the 125cc
A-class win in style. Graham also
topped the 250cc A class with ease.
Action in the 50cc classes was
intense, as all the little guys loved the
track layout and put on a great show.
Florida's D.J. Oakes enjoyed the
most success in the smallest division,
topping both the Oil-Injected and
50cc (4-6) classes. North Carolina's
Jacob Hayes was the big winner in
the 50cc (7-9) group, winning his
qualifier as well as the main event.
This race was the initial shakedown for the new facility, and every-
one was impressed by the safe, fun
layout. While the race was a daytime
event held on Saturday in conjunction
with Sunday's day race, lights are
currently being installed, and the
Supercross program will become a
stand-alone race held at night. The
track is constructed in a natural bowl
area and the spectator area provides
a great view of the whole track. The
promoter has enlisted Miller Brewing
Company as a co-sponsor, and
everyone involved is committed to
making this program a success.
