went 4-4 for third overall aboard his
Husaberg.
Johnny Greaves of DePere, Wisconsin, aced both motos of the highly
competitive Over 35 A class, ahead
of Andy
Stacy
and
Dennis
Hawthome.
Greaves gated well in the first Over
30 A moto, sneaking into the front
with Hawthorne on his rear tire.
Greaves checked out with the win by
almost 10 seconds. Stacy finished
second, with Hawthorne close behind.
The second moto didn't quite go
as well for Greaves, who got caught
up in a melee in the first corner off
the start. By the time Greaves pulled
his Honda from the mess, the 25rider field had checked out. Stacy led,
with Rossetto and Hawthorne tagging
along. Greaves mounted a charge
and went from dead last to inside the
top lOin one lap, slicing his way to
the front - only to see Stacy greet the
checkers first. Stacy (2-1) took the
overall, ahead of Greaves. Hawthorne
(3-4) was third.

ory McDaniel rode in three motos
at the event under the lights and
was successful from gate drop to
checkers. He got the holeshot in most
of his motos and was never headed
the entire evening.
In the 125cc Intermediate class,
McDaniel faced five other racers who
could have presented a challenge,
had they gotten close enough. The
biggest opportunity for the opposition
came in moto one when Nick Baugh
took his Kawasaki off the line
ahead of the pack. Before lap one
was complete, Powerhous/Yamaha/
O'Neal/Pro Circuit-backed McDaniel
rocketed his YZ into the lead and held
it until the checkers flew. Baugh hung
on for second, trailed by Rick
Berhorst, on a Suzuki RM.
McDaniel sped off the line first in
moto two, and basically the race was
over. This time Berhorst was able to
nab second and Baugh was relegated
to third. The overall results showed
McDaniel perfect with double-moto
wins and Berhorst second, while
Baugh grabbed third.
McDaniel also entered the Pro-Am
"X" class, which shared a gate with
the Sportsman "X" class. Here, too,
he was untouchable, charging into
the night ahead of the pack. He kept
up the torrid pace even though he
was not in danger of having anyone
come close, probably operating with
the mindset that you don't practice
slow and you don't race slow. There
were no other Pro-Am contenders, as
C
the other rider slated to ride didn't
make it to the start line. McDaniel
was trailed across the line by Sportsman X winner Raymond Navarro, on
a Kawasaki.
In American Historic Racing
Motorcycle Association action, the
riders contesting the Post-Vintage
classes (roughly 1975 to 1984 models) put on a good show. The limited
suspension on these older machines
didn't visibly slow them down any on
the highly technical Club Moto track,
which is basically a supercross in a
field. The largest entry was in the
500cc Gran Prix Intermediate class
and they provided a good battle, with
much passing and repassing. In the
first moto for this class, Matt Itamura
powered to the lead on his beautiful
Maico after a horrid start. Once in the
lead, he was not challenged and rode
at the point until moto's end. He
was trailed by Don Garner, on a TM
Suzuki, and by Mario Andreini, on an
early YZ Yamaha.
In the second moto, Andreini took
control early and held off repeated
challenges from first-moto winner Itamura. When the checkers came out,
it was Andreini first, Itamura second
and Garner third. Husqvarna pilot Syd
Jones was able to hang on in the first
moto for fourth place but did not
contest the second moto.
In all, there were four motos
of Post-Vintage classes, and those
were divided into 14 separate classes.
The demands of modern courses
on elder machines and riders is
understood, but that didn't deter the
riders of the Over 50 class, including
John Gulliford, on a Montesa VR, and
Dave Myklebust, on a Husqvarna.
They both rode each moto and had
huge smiles on their faces at the
completion. Gulliford won both
motos, but the margin of victory was
not huge.

his CR80 to the top of the podium in three classes at the opener of
Monster Mountain's new Supercross
facility, leading nearly every lap of
his qualifying heats as well as the
main events. The super track layout
complemented Lewis' smooth style,
as he seemed to float around the
course, making his wins look easy.
This month's program at the Monster featured the unveiling of the new
Supercross facility on Saturday, in
conjunction with a full outdoor program the following day. The event
was co-sponsored by Gatorade and
was billed as the Gatorade Supercross/Motocross Challenge. Both
days also served as Southeastern
qualifiers for the NMA Finals at Ponca
City, Oklahoma, to be held in August.
Perfect weather and a great racetrack
proved the perfect combo for plenty
of action. Riders throughout the
region have been anxiously awaiting
the opening of the new SX facility,
and they were not disappointed, as
the safe yet challenging course
exceeded everyone's expectations.
Qualifying action started with a
bang as the 125cc C class left the
gate. Georgia's Jermaine Duncan led
