Pittsburgh Crass Country Pittsburgh, Teus Results: May 4-5, 2002 [Roand 51 Pittsburgh Cross Country: An unidentified - make that unidentifiable rider crosses a field (no, that is not a creek crossing) in Pittsburgh, Texas, site of the fifth round of TCCRA 3othanniversary-season action. TCCRA 30th Anniversary Season Round 5: Pittsburgh Cross Country Taylor Made It Through the Mud By JENNIFER WEBB pmSBURGH, TX, MAY 4-5 hen TCCRA's members voted on a month-long break in April to take in the Supercross event at Texas Stadium, they had no way of knowing it would turn into a mourning period for fellow racer Stephen Grinner, who was killed during the Expert race at round four in Alto, Texas. "Grinder," as he was known, hit a tree, sustained severe head trauma and was killed instantly. Hundreds attended his funeral, and the way to the grave site was marked with the traditional race ribbon and arrows, befitting a man who died doing what he loved. Truly he will be missed. The club resumed their season in Pittsburgh, which is a track that provides for a variety of challenges for every level of rider. Add several inches of rain to this course, as was the case the week prior, and it becomes a soupy, muddy mess. Then add even more rain first thing on race day and you have flooded creek crossings enough to warrant removing sections of the track for the Amateur race in the morning and still more cuts for the Ladies and Minis race at noon. For 39-year-old Open Intermediate rider Mike "Monkeybutt" Taylor, who has been racing on and off since 1989, this was a day to remember. "I won't lie," remarked the O'Neal Racing/Cycle Town South/Patman W Racing-backed Taylor, "I was hoping for a reschedule. Off the line, I got about a fourth-place start. After the first check, my spotters had me in second, and I was having a blast with a guy in my class - must have been Jeff Willingham. We traded places several times. I was too cautious in the boggy flats, looking for the firm edge, and he would just thunder by going right down the middle! "Coming around at the end of lap two, my spotters stopped holding up fingers. They would yell and hold fists in the air. That usually means they ran out of fingers to hold up and they will be very proud of me for finishing anyway. As it turned out, I was in first! It's been a long time coming, and I've had my doubts along the way. The coolest part is that it wasn't some magic out-of-body deal, I wasn't in way over my head - I just had a good ride all race long." Open Amateur rider Fred "DDF" Robeson Jr. took first in his class and also first overall Amateur. "This race was more of a 'survival of the fittest.'" said Afam Drivetrains/No- Toil/MX- BONZ-backed Robeson. "Judgment, technique, and sheer determination were musts for a win." RNS Racing·sponsored Jessica Magee, 27, made several smart decisions that led to her best finish in three years of racing. "I guess I took over the lead about a mile into the track," Magee said. "There was a really bad bottleneck on a small uphill that had some roots exposed. I found a route through the trees to skip the bottleneck, so I took it. I went around about two turns and encountered another traffic jam. At this spot, I just followed a couple of other riders through trees and jumped right back on the track, again avoiding the gridlock." Magee went on to finish first in her class, with O'Neal-sponsored Cindy Gross taking second. This was also Gross' highest-placing finish in three years of racing. For the Pros and Experts' race in the afternoon, the creek crossings were put back in, even though the water level was still high, making for a miserable afternoon for some. Gerald Brummell took first in the Over 40 Expert class. "This is my first year in the Expert class," Brummell said, "and it was a huge surprise to get a first. I didn't really know how I finished until more and more people kept telling me and until I went to see the results myself sure enough, first place!" Brummell thanked his sponsors Momentum Motorsports of Mount Pleasant, Gaerne Boots, and Sprocket Specialists. Self-sponsored Tom Robinson took first in the Pro class. "I got a good start and took the lead about a quarter-mile into it and never looked back," Robinson said. "I went out and scouted the bigger mudholes during the Amateur race to find good lines, and that seemed to help during the race." Tony Joiner and Brian Storrie followed Robinson in for second and third place, respectively. All three cue' e PRO: 1. Tom Robinson (Yam); 2. Tony Joiner (KTM); 3. Brian Storrie (GG): 4.
