In the second set of points-paying heats, Rome Comeaux and Jeremy Midkiff - both. from Possum Cove, Louisiana - were dueling from the start. Midkiff, riding a Jawa-powered bike lent to him by Bill Hemmitt, was able to hold off Comeaux's outside charges. When Midkiff went wide in the second corner, Comeaux was able to put his bike underneath and pass. Comeaux kept the lead on his "straight up" Jawa and went on to win. The hometown gang was starting to show some muscle. In the second round of heat races, Barlow claimed a win, earning the points he needed to clinch this season's ICE Speedway Championship; he had now captured the World Championship for the fourth time in five years! Lining up for the last-chance qualifier, Comeaux was on the pole, Jones was in the middle of the front row, and Midkiff was on the outside of the second row. Midkiff was now riding a GM-powered bike borrowed from Mark Crang. All of these riders des- perately wanted to transfer to the main event. Jones pulled off one of his famous holeshots and carried the advantage to the checkers. Comeaux suffered handling problems brought on by the soft ice and finished fourth. Midkiff finished sixth. Jones' LCQ win earned him the fourth starting position in the main. FaFard was on the pole, with Barlow beside him. FaFard had missed the drivers' meeting in order to install and align fresh new screws in his rear tire. FaFard's strategy paid dividends as he got the holeshot and held Barlow at bay all the way to the finish. The Louisiana fans roared their approval as the French-speaking rider celebrated his victory with a major wheelie down the front stretch. This was a storybook ending to a successful (albeit shortened) season. Happy with the growing attendance at these events, Gary Densford is working toward a 16-event schedule in the upcoming season. eN Century Tel Center Bossier City, louisiana Results: March 9, 2002 lRound 10 of 101 LeQ: 1.
