.--------------------------------------------------- West Florida MX Park: Corey Patrick roars out front in the second 125cc C mota at round five of the third annual Southeastern Motocross series In Milton, Florida. Southeastern Motocross Series Round 5: West Florida MX Park Joiner Joins Patrick on the Podium By NEAL R. THOMAS MILTON, FL, MAR. 10 oseph Joiner, riding in the Pee Wee (7-90 class, and Cory Patrick, contesting the 125cc C class were among the stand-out winners at West Florida MX Park in Milton, site of the fifth round of the third annual Southeastern Motocross Series. The Pee Wee class and the 125cc C class are always fun to watch because they usually have a large number of riders, and there are many lead changes that come about from the occasional chaos brought on by such eager young racers. However, as regards Joiner and Patrick, their riding was anything but chaotic; instead, their rides looked like a demonstration in style. These two riders exude the kind of style that will put them at the front for a long time to come if they decide to stay with this sport. Of course, they were not the only ones in their respective classes with "the right stuff" - they simply had more of it on that particular day. The 125cc C race was one of the best of the day. Only one rider in the top five finished in the same position in both motos. Patrick jumped out with the holeshot and the early lead in the first moto. He looked comfortable up front, but he never opened a gap on the field of aggressive riders behind him. Doug McCoy passed quick starters George Gass and Eric Hinton, which put him in a position to challenge for the lead. Meanwhile, Cody Johnson joined in and made it j 64 APRIL 1 7, 2002' eye I e a three-way tussle for the lead. Johnson eventually slipped by McCoy and immediately went to work on Patrick, who was having a little trouble in the rhythm section and the whoops. Unfortunately for Patrick, that was where Johnson was riding very well. Consequently, Johnson, who had already worked his way up from sixth, charged by in the whoops to take over first. He carried that momentum all the way to the checkered flag for first overall, followed by Patrick, D.J. Malon and McCoy. Patrick absconded with the holeshot again in the second moto, but this time he seemed to have a different strategy. His late-moto defeat must have put him on edge, because he really winged it out front to score the second-moto win. Johnson, on the other hand, struggled to get past McCoy, Will Little and Malon, who all seemed to pick up their speed a notch in the second moto. Johnson took a very strong second, followed closely by Malon and Little. The second-moto tie breaker gave Patrick first overall, followed by Johnson, Malon, McCoy and Little. The Pee Wee (7-9) race was mostly the "Explosive Joseph" Joiner show, even though "Thrillin' Dillon" Scott made him stay on the gas in both motos. Joiner shot off the line like a cork from a popgun in both motos with almost twice the speed of everyone else, who looked like they were stuck in the- barrel of that popgun. He set a blistering pace that only Scott could come close to matching. n e 'IN S ---- Scott and the rest of the pack rode hard and showed some true skill and consistency, ending up as they started - with Joiner in first, followed by Scott, Camron Byrd, Nick Sutton and the rest. In the second moto, Joiner and the much-improved Scott roosted away from the others. If you could measure speed by the length of the rider's roost, these two were going very fast. They zoomed around the track, zigzagging around the turns. Joiner took the checkers for first overall with a perfect score, followed by Scott, Sutton, Byrd and Will Kozain. Serious action was prevalent throughout the day, with very exciting rides put in by many others, such as Justin Thompson, who placed first i~ the 125cc Money class on a borrowed bike. Arthur Stromberg rode a powerful, unchallenged race in the 250cc B class, winning both motos. John Hanford did likewise in the.Over 30 class. Due to their domination, look for these two to move up in class in the near future. eN West Florida MX Park Milton, Florida Results: March 10, 2002 (Round 5) P/W (4ยท6): 1. D.J. Oakes (KTM); 2. Welch, who was forced to sit out most of the 2001 National outdoor season with a knee injury, made his official debut as a Shenandoah Honda/MSR/HJC rider a good one, sweeping all six motos of the 125cc A, 250cc A and Over 25 A classes. SM City Motorsports-backed Yamaha rider Jeff Drury blasted to the early lead in the first 125cc A moto, followed by Welch, VPE-sponsored Suzuki rider Andrew Tsakanikas, KTM-mounted John Bowlin, and Yamaha rider Dallas Lusk. Welch wasted no time moving to the front of the pack, slicing under Drury on a technical off-camber to take over the lead just before the completion of the opening lap. Tsakanikas followed suit and also began to pressure Drury, quickly tak- N ing over the runner-up position. With clear track now in front of him, Welch began to pull away, leaving Tsakanikas and Drury to battle for second. Bowlin was steady in fourth, followed by a three-rider skirmish for fifth between Lusk, Honda-mounted Jeff Slusher and Yamaha pilot Steven Onisko. By the halfway point, Welch had checked out, amassing a lead of more than 10 seconds. Drury fought his way past Tsakanikas for second, while Onisko charged past Slusher and Lusk and into fifth. Welch went on to take the moto win, followed by Drury, who put in a strong ride for second. Tsakanikas was third, followed by Bowlin in fourth. Onisko rounded out the top five. Welch took the holeshot in the second 125cc A moto, this time chased by Barr's Competition-backed Aaron Day and Bumpstiks-backed Rodney Horrocks, both aboard Yamahas. Tsakanikas was fourth, followed by Lusk in fifth. Showing Welch that he meant business, Day aggressively moved past his Honda-mounted rival
