Hara Arena: Chuck Mesley won the Extreme Jump-Off competition on both nights of Regional Arenacross Series action In Dayton, Ohio. Regional Arenacross Series by Speed Stick Hara Arena Burkhart Blasts Dayton By MARK BUCHANAN DAYTON, OH, JAN. 18·19 ark Burkhart dominated the competition at the Regional Arenacross at the Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio. On both nights, a packed house got to see Burkhart take three out of four main-event wins on his Sports Cycles/Cycra Yamahas. Mike Katin nailed the holeshot on Friday night in the 250cc main on a Gateway Cycles/Pro Action Husqvarna, in front of Bradley Strunk, on an REP/Cycle Specialties Suzuki, and Jim Neese, riding a Liquid Performance/Upstate Cycle Husqvarna. Burkhart held fourth place and took the inside line through the U-shaped first turn to quickly move into second place, behind Katin. Strunk held third place, in front of Neese and Jimmy Wilson, on a SoCal/Nichsolums Yamaha. Burkhart pressured Katin for three laps before making the pass for the lead, with Strunk and Neese close behind, waging a great battle for third place. Wilson held fifth, followed closely by Todd DeHoop, on a Powers Motorsports/Quality Underground Honda. Burkhart gradually pulled away while Katin held off Strunk and Neese in a great three-way battle for second place. The fight for second place lasted for five laps before Strunk made the pass with a little more than a lap to go. Neese pressured Katin for third on the last lap, but he couldn't make the pass, finishing fourth, in front of DeHoop. Burkhart nailed the holeshot and went wire to wire for the win in the 125cc main on Friday, in front of M DeHoop and Matt Maximoff, on a Pro Source Suzuki. Chris Whitcraft, on an F&S Suzuki, Maximoff and Katin trailed Burkhart off the line, with DeHoop just behind on the inside. DeHoop held the inside line through the first turn and the whoop section to quickly move up. A big tangle early in the turn after the whoop section changed the running order at the front, and DeHoop moved up to second, in front of Maximoff and Jamie Brockman, on a PR Racing Honda. Honda of Troy rider Scott Metz moved into fifth, followed by Strunk. The top five stayed the same until Strunk closed on Metz late in the race to take fifth for the final running order. Attrition was high and Whitcraft fell back to finish eighth, with Katin falling back to finish in 11th place. The track had a tough whoop section, and several riders went down there throughout the day. Jeff Baker, on a Dreyer Yamaha, crashed out of the race with a broken shoulder at the end of the section, and Suzuki of Greenville's Steve Cross sported a bent front number plate for much of the race. DeHoop nailed the holeshot in the 250cc main on Saturday, in front of Suzuki jockey Charlie Dunaway and Wilson. Burkhart held fourth entering the first turn, and he took the inside to quickly move into second, behind DeHoop. Wilson held third, followed by Dunaway and Neese. Burkhart pressured DeHoop for the lead the entire race, but he couldn't make the pass and had to settle for second place. Neese passed Dunaway for fourth on the third lap and then passed Wilson four laps later for the 65 (7·11): 1. Sha.,n Rife (KTM); 2. Brock Wagner (KTM); 3. Vaughn May. (KTM); 4. Dillon Grimm (Ka.,); 5. Dustin Cochran (KTM). 85 (12-15); 1. Patrick Massie (Ka.,); 2. Grant Moreland (Suz); 3. Nathan Ciszewski (Ka.,); 4. Cody final podium spot. Wilson held on to fourth, but both Katin and Strunk got by Dunaway near the end of the race. Burkhart took the holeshot in the 125cc main, in front of DeHoop and Whitcraft. The top three positions stayed the same throughout, and Burkhart pulled away for an easy win. Suzuki rider David Hill held fourth early on but was passed by Neese and Metz on the fifth lap. Neese held on to fourth, and the top five stayed the same for four laps before Strunk made a block-pass on Metz in the turn after the whoops for fifth place. The only event Burkhart didn't do well in on either night was the Dash For Cash. Strunk took the holeshot for the wire-to-wire win on Friday, in front of Wilson, Katin and Burkhart. Neese nailed the holeshot, in front of Katin and Burkhart, for the win on Saturday. DeHoop moved into second but slid out in the turn before the finish line, giving the spot back to Katin. Burkhart finished fourth again. Chuck Mesley won the Extreme Jump-Off contest on both nights on a Furrious/No Fear Honda, narrowly edging out Greg Brooks, on a JMC Racing Honda. Bradley Baker took the win in the 50cc class on an Action Racing!Team Polini machine on both nights. Dustin Cochran finished second on Friday night on a KRW Cycles KTM, followed by Ty Ray Phillips, on a Flat Out Racing KTM. Cameron Reas took second place on Saturday night, riding an S&S Powersports Cobra, followed by Kody Hamm, on a Ron & Brian's Motor Sports Polini. eN Simonton (Suz); 5. AMA District 20 Texas Championship Hare Scrambles Series Round 1: Skull Creek Bike Park Franklin Head Rider at Skull Creek The number-two AA rider of 2001, Hayden Franklin, was back with a new ride - a Cycletown South-sponsored KTM 400 SX. He was on his game from the start, leading every lap to finish first in the AA class and also nab the Overall A award. The number-one AA rider of 2001, Lyle Lovett Motorsports' Lynn Bailey, had a strong second-place finish on his new YZ250. AI Cravens cruised in a solid third, matching his best 2001 finish. The race of the class was for fourth place, between Gas Gas rider Brian Storrie and T J's Cycle-sponsored Brian Johnson, who waged a fierce battle all race long and were never more than a few seconds apart. By STEVE CARDWELL COLUMBUS, TX, JAN. 19-20 he AMA District 20 Texas Championship Hare Scrambles Series kicked off in a big way as the Trail Riders of Houston hosted round one at Skull Creek in Columbus, Texa5. More than 400 riders were treated to perfect weather and riding conditions, and a 20-mile loop. The track was basically a high-speed affair that developed into a sea of huge sand whoops. Gas mileage seemed to be the major problem for most riders, even the ones with large tanks, so the pits were jumping with activity. T cycle n e _ 55 • MARCH 13,2002 71
